The spacing is obtained by means of two escapenient wheels 0 and f, co-axially arranged on the shaft (1 WlHt'J; is driven by the pinion 0 through the intermediation of a clutch 0 in combination. with certain dogs which are not shown herein. but are shown and described in the parent application Sr. No. 605,732, above referred to. The escapenient wheel 6 is rigidly fixed to the shaft 7 while the escapement wheel. f is loosely mounted upon the same and is permitted to revolve freely through a fixed are controlled by stops carried by the shaft g or by the fixed escapenu-nt wheel a. In the form illustrated in the drawings, said stops ci'aopriwe a circumferential slot f arranged in the boss o'i the wheel f, and a screw g rigidly fixed in the shaft g. The escapement wheel f is spring .pressed in relation to the fixed escapement wheel 6 in one direction by means of the spiral spring e; the amount of movement being limited by the stops hereinbefore described. A. feed dog is adapted to engage first one wheel and then the other, as will be understood. As far as the present invention is concerned, the shaft 9 can be controlled by any suitable typewriter escapement.
The operation of my machine is as follows :I or writing ordinary Arabic or Turkish. the pulley d is attached to the frame, of the machine at d", the thumb lever b is actuated and maintained in position by a detent if. the thumb lever a being used as a release key in the usual way. The carriage now moves from the operator's left to his right under control of the escapement mechanism, the line oi writing reading from right to left. In order that figures may be written it is necessary to reverse the direction of the line of writing, the pulley at is therefore attached to the carriage at d, the thumb lever if is permitted to resume its normal condition'and the thumb lever a is drawn toward the operator and maintained in position by the detent a, the lever 6 being used as the ordinary release lever.
It will be seen that by the use of a unidirectional escapement and escapement pinion, 3 possible by myinvention to retain all 5% usual devices common to typewriting machine eseapements, such as back spacing devices and the like.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine in combination, a platen carriage, a rotary uni-directional escapement, two adjustable racks engagin on opposite sides of a pinion controlle by the escapement, arms pivoted to the platen carriage and supporting each rack independently of the other and adapted to swing each said rack independently into and out of engagementwith the pinion, hand operated means carried by the carriage for controlling the position of the racks, and means for continuously spring pressing the platen carriage in either one direction or the other; the movement of the said platen carriage being controlled by the step-by-step movement of the said escapeinent pinion, substantially as described.
2. In a typewriting n'iachine in combination, a platen carriage, a rotary uni-directional escapement, two adjustable racks engaging on opposite sides of a pinion controlled by the escapement, means for operatively engaging either one or other rack with said pinion at will, a single spring barrel, a cord or chain wound around same and having its end fastened to the carriage. a
pulley or snatch block threaded on said cord or chain and attaching means both upon the frame and upon the carriage for engaging the pulley or snatch block at will to cause the carriage to be spring pressed in either one direction or the other, according to the direction of feed required, the movement of the said platen carriage being controlled by the step by step movement of the said escapement piiiion, substantially as described.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a. rotary uni-directional eseapenient, a pinion controlled by said escapenient, two racks independently engageable with said pinion on opposite sides thereof, one of said racks adapted to control said carriage for feed in one direction and the other of said racks being adapted to control said carriage for feed in the other direction, means for propelling said carriage in either direction at will, and carriage release devices for temporarily moving out of engagement the rack that is in use.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a rotary uni-directional escapement wheel, two racks, means for gearing said racks independently with said escapement wheel, one of said racks being used to control the carriage for feed in one direction and the other of said racks for feed in the other direction, means for propelling said carriage in either direction at will, and carriage release devices for moving out of engagement the rack that is in use.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage a rotary uni-directional escapement, two racks, gearing for connecting said racks alternatively with said escapement, spring means for pressing said two racks into engagement with said gearing, means for holding one of said racks out of engagement, and means for moving. out of enga ement the rack that is in use in order to re ease the carriage from its escapement.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, means for propelling said earriage'in either direction at will, a rotary uni-directional escapement, a pinion controlled by said escapement, two racks for engagement with said pinion on opposite sides thereof, springs for pressing said racks toward said pinion, means for holding one of said racks out of engagement, and means for moving the other of said racks temporarilv out of engagement to release the carriage. i
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a spring for driving said carriage, a band for connecting said spring with said carriage, said band being connected to said carria e near one end thereof, a pulley over whic said band runs, and means for attaching said pulley to the stationary framework or to the other end of said carriage in order to feed said oarriage one way or the other.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, escapement mechanism, two feed racks movable independently into and out of operative position, one of said racks being used to control the carriage for feed in one direction and the other of said racks for feed in the other direction, means for propelling the carriage in either direction at will, and carriage release devices for moving out of engagement the rack that is in use.
