To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WILLIAM TUR- NER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 68 Park Lane, Glissold Park, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking Appliances for Type-VVriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to inking devices more particularly applicable to type-writers of the kind wherein a pad is employed for inking the type; and it consists in providing means whereby the printing may be performed in various colors, the efficiency of the machine being thereby increased.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of an inking device constructed according to my invention, Fig. 2 being a view looking at the left-hand end and Fig. 3 a view looking at the right-hand end of Fig. 1. Fig. 4c is a diagrammatic view showing the application of the improved device to a Yost type-writer. Fig. 5 is a view of the coupling employed for driving the inking device from the mainspring and drum which works the carriage. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the device as seen from the left in Fig. 2 and from above in Fig. 1, the spool C and its bevel-wheel D being omitted, so as to disclose the main body of the frame.
In carrying out my invention as applied, by way of example, to a Yost type-writer, wherein the type-levers are arranged radially within a ring R, Fig. 4, which contains the inking-pad, and are capable of bringing the type successively to the printing-point at or about the center of the said ring, the device comprises a frame or carrier A, adapted for attachment to the plate P of the main ring. In the example shown the frame is formed with two slots-a a, which engage two clamping-screws (not shown) with which the plate of the main ring is provided. Loosely mounted upon a sleeve orbearing A formed at one extremity of the carrier A, is a spindle B, constructed to be moved longitudinally in a manner hereinafter described. Upon this spindle B is loosely mounted a pair of spools O C, the latter being driven by bevel-wheels D D, attached thereto and capable of severally meshing with the bevel-wheel D, the latto the mainspring and drum, which actuates the carriage of the machine by means of the coupling d. (Shown detached in Fig. 5.) An arm (1 on a plate d attached to the ratchetwheel 01 by means of pin (1 engages a slot d formed in the coupling (1 and by means of a spring-pressed pawl d imparts motion to the bevel-wheelD, which is mounted to rotate freely on a stud D", screwed into the back of the sleeve or hearing A The direction of motion of the spools may be reversed by means of the lever E, which is pivoted at e in the frame A and engages with a pin e, attached to the spindle B,th'e pin passing through a slot (shown in dotted ilnes) in the sleeve or bearing A By moving the free end of the lever E to theon'e side or the other the spindle B is movedlongitudinally in its hearing A by means of the pin e, which is in engagement with the lever, thus rendering the one spool or the other the-driven spool, or both spools may be rendered inoperative by allowing the lever to assume the mid position, as shown in the drawings. The rotation of the 'ter being coupled with the spindle pertaining A gearing during a certain movement of the carriagein other Words, during the return movementmay be prevented by means of the pawl F, which may engage with the teeth of the bevel-Wheel-D, the latter serving the purpose of a ratchet-wheel. The bevel-wheel D is thus held stationary, while the ratchetwheel 11 rotates freely against the pawl (1 The ribbon G extends above and to a little distance beyond the printing-point G, Fig. 6. From the one spool it is led and supported by an arm A, which extends across the machine between the main ring R and the carriage K, the ribbon being then led back to the other spool. Guide-rollers may be provided on the arm, with a view to assisting the travel of the ribbon. One of such guide-rollers is shown at a. p The arm A is preferably formedin two or more parts hinged or pivoted together, as shown at A in order to admit of the outer or hinged portion being folded back, asji ndicated in broken lines in'Fig..1,"thuspermit-= ting the ribbon being moved away from the printing-point when occasion requires. The outer portion of the arm A is supported on the rollers a when the apparatus is extended across the machine. The spools may be made removable from the spindle B by providing the bevel-wheels D D with sleeves d d" and connecting the spools with the wheels by means of pins d The set-screws b b secure the spools in position upon the spindle B. By these means spools containing inking-ribbons of different colors may be readily exchanged.
The hereindeseribed attachment may be employed either in conjunction with or independently of the ordinary inking-pad.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a type-writer inking device operated by the mainspring and drum which actuates the carriage, a carrier having a jointed arm serving to support the inking-ribbon and to guide the same to and from the printing-point, the carrier being capable of folding back on itself, whereby the inkingribbon remains taut and is moved away from the printing position, substantially as set forth.
2. In an inking device for type-writers, the combination with the carrier, of the spindle mounted rotatively therein, the bevel-wheels D, I), rotatable on said spindle, the bevelwheel 1), rotatable on the carrier, means for putting either of the wheels D into gear with the wheel D, and the spring-pawl Fadapted to engage the teeth of the gear-wheel D, substantially as set forth.
