Be it known that I, (11.10 B. YAW, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Arlington, in the-county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
My present invention relates to ribbon mechanism and more especially to ribbon mechanism that is suitable for use with tally strip devices. The principal object of my invention is to provlde new and improved mechanism of the character specified. The present application is a division of my prior application Serial No. 861,966, filed September 16,1914.
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the features of'construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

As appears from Figs. 1, 2 and 5 the mam frame of the No. 11 Remington front-strike typewriting machine to wh ch my invention is shown as applied, comprises a top plate 1 from which use lugs 2 that support grooved guide rails 3, said rails cooperating through anti-friction balls 4 with the front bar 5 and rear bar 6 of a carriage truck which further includes end bars 7 connecting said front and rear bars. Shiftably connected with said truck by devices 8 is a platen frame 0; carrier comprising end bars or plates 9 and cross rods or bars-1Q and 11, said platen frame and its supporting truck platen 14 comprises an ordinary wooden,
core 16 and rubber sheath 17. At the righthand end the shaft 13 is secured in a platen head 18 secured to the core by screws 19. The reduced outer end of the head 18 receives a line spacing ratchet wheel 20 secured by screws 21. Confined loosely between the ratchet wheel 20 and the end of the platen is a second line spacing ratchet wheel 22 and a. gear wheel 23 pinned together at 24. Coiiperative with the ratchet wheel 20 is a detent 25 and a line spacing pawl 26, said pawl depending from the stud 27 (Figs. 1 and 2) fixed to a supporting arm 28 loosely mounted on the bushing 15, which also provides a support for a regulating arm 29, arms 28 and 29 being confined loosely between the end bar 9 and a nut 30 screwed on the bushing 15 (Fig. 4).
The pawl 26 is actuated by devices coup prising a link 31 (Fig. 2), a 'bell crank 32, fulcrumed at 33 on the carriage truck, a second link 34, a crank arm 35, and a rock shaft 36 carrying said crank arm, said rock shaft extending forward and terminating in a hand piece 37. The rock shaft bears in a housing 38 fixed to the carriage truck and inclosing a restoring spring (not shown). By operating the ,line-spacing-hand piece or handle 37 the train of devices connecting it with the pawl 26 is actuated causing the pawl to coiiperate with the ratchet wheel 20 to turn the platen through a line space distance. Such actuation of the pawl 26 also automatically actuates a supplementarypawl 39 rotatably mounted on the stud 27 to cooperate with the ratchet wheel 22. A wire spring 40 is coiled around the stud 27 and engages with pins 41 and 42 projecting oppositely from said pawls. The tendency of said sprin is constantly to throw or hold the pawl 39 orward awa from the ratchet wheel 22 and maintain t e pin 42 engaged with the end of a slot 43 in the pawl26. Devices which are brought into operation automatically are provided to move the pawl 39 into operative position, said devices comprising a bar 44 (Figs. 1-3) having inclined end portions or cams 45, said bar being rigid on a plate 46 having slots 47 which receive screws 48 threaded into the top late. With the parts positioned as in the rawings the 'pawl 39 will be inoperative but as the carriage moves leftward said pawl will engage with the right-hand cam and will be forced rearward b said cam against the spring 40 until said pawl is brought into engagement with the rear face of the bar 44 by which it will be maintained in position to operatively engage with its ratchet wheel during further leftward movements.

The bar 44 is so positioned that during the time it is effective to engage said pawl the tally strip hereinafter described is opposite the printing point on the platen. After the pawl rides off the left-hand cam it will become ineffective, but during the return movements pf the carriage said pawl will again ride up on to the bar 44 by reason of the action of the left-hand cam 45. It will be understood thatthe pawl 39 will be efl'ective so long as it'is in engagement with the bar 44 but that at all other times it will be inoperative so that actuatio'ns of the dine spacing handle 37 will not affect said pawl.39 in so far as causing any action on the ratchet wheel 22 is con cerned.
Cotiperative with the under side of the platen are spring-pressed main and second ary feed rollers each comprising sections numbered respectively 49 and 50 which in turn are respectively mounted on rods 51 and 52 supported at their ends on parallelarms 53 which are carried by lever members 55 supported on a rod 56 rigid on the platen frame.
The tally strip devices proper are mounted on two parallel rods or bars 69 and 70 secured to the bars 9 (Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5).
The tally strip supporting frame comprises end plates 71 and a cross bar 71, said plates having huhportions 72 which fit over the rods 69. and'70 and receive securing screws. The plates 71 provide bearings for a tally strip delivery carrier spool or holder comprising a hub 73, a flange 74 and a pin 75 formed with a depression which cooperates with'a spring pin 76 hearing in a housing 77 on the left-hand plate 71. The hub 73 is depressed to cooperate with a friction disk 7 8 having a stem 79 fixed to the righthand plate 71, The tally strip 80 wound in rollform on the usual paste-board core is frictionaliy supported on the hub 73 and its free end is drawn oil at the back of the roll, passing downward over the rod or bar 71 and thence into the control of feeding devices comprising a central roll composed as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of a core 82 and sheath 83, the core being shdably mounted on the shaft 84 which passes through the end plates and bears in the end bars 9. The shaft 84 has a groove 85 which is engaged by tongues 82 bent inward from the core 82. Rotary movements may be communicated to the shaft 84 to turn the feed roller either by hand through the finger button 86 fixed to the right-hand end of the shaft or automatically through connections between said shaft and the gear wheel 23, said connections comprising a pinion 87 having a hub 88 which receives a set screw 89 which fixes the pinion to the shaft. An idler pinion 90 between the pinion 87 and the gear wheel 23 constantly meshes with both, said idler being rotatably mounted on the rod 69 between collars 91 and 92 (Fig. 1).
Cotiperative with the central pressure roller at its front and rear sides respectively are pressure rollers 94 and 96, the shafts 97 of said rollers bearing in slots 98 in the end plates 71. Springs 99 engage with the shafts to press the feed rollers 94 and 96 into cooperative engagement with the central roller. The tally strip passes down between the center roller and the feed roller, behind the platen and around the same and up at its front side, and thence between the central and front rollers so that said tally strip may be advanced either by turning the finger button 86 or through the action of the pawl 39.
The main work sheet 105 (Fig. 2) is arranged with its right-hand portion overlying the tally strip, it being fed around the platen by the rollers 49 and 50. Said main sheet receives ink-impressions from a ribbon which is controlled by a vibratory carrier 106 (Fig. 2) of ordinary construction. It is desirable that the tally strip also should receive ink-impressions and that accordingly supplementary inking devices for the tally strip of novel character are provided, said devices comprising.(Figs. 1, 2 and 3) two supplementary ribbon spools 107 all. nged face to face one on each side of each of the end plates 71. Said spools are mounted loosely on a shaft 108 which extends through openings in said plates 71, the spools being adapted to be connected in alternation to said shaft through hand controlled clutch devices. Certain of said clutch devices serve also as bearings for the, shaft 108, being interposedabetween said shaft and the sup plementary ribbon spools of which in efiect they are a part. At the left outside the end plates 71, a clutch wheel or member 109 is mounted co-axially with the shaft 108, said wheel being provided with crown clutch teeth 110 and having a hub 111 which extends inward or toward the right through an opening in the plate 71 to the right of which plate is mounted the ribbon spool 107, said spool being fitted over the hub 111 and secured thereto by a set screw 111. The
construction permits the clutch wheel 109 and the spool 107 to rotate as one, while the plate 71, interposed between them, prevents movement of the clutch member and spool lengthwise of the shaft 108. This shaft bears in the hub 111 which serves as a journal for it. The shaft may turn independently of the wheel 109 and its ribbon spool, which deviceson the other hand may also turn independently of the shaft. Codperative with the wheel 109 is asecond clutch wheel 112 provided with crown clutch teeth 113 that are adapted to mesh with the teeth 110. The wheel 112 is suitably fixed to the shaft 108 near its left-hand end and is provided with'a hub 112 formed with two circumferential grooves 114 and 115. Adapted to cooperate with these grooves is'a pivoted latch 116 pivoted at 117 to the end of the cross rod 71 and provided with a draw spring 118, which tends to force said latch downward about its pivot and maintain it engaged with one or another of the grooves 114 and 115, depending on which is in register therewith. When thus engaged, endwise movement of the shaft 108 is prevented, but when the latch is lifted the shaft 108 may be shifted endwise to bring the clutch wheel 112 into engagement with the clutch wheel 109 or to disengage it therefrom, while at the same time causing corresponding changes to take place in the clutch members associated with the right-hand spool 107 and now to be described. To facilitate endwise movement of the shaft it is provided at its ends with detachable knobs or finger pieces 119. A clutch wheel 120 is arranged at the right of the right-hand plate 71 and is provided with clutch teeth 121 and a hub 122 which extends inward through the. plate 71 and surrounds the shaft .108. The righthand spool 107 is fitted over the inner end portion of the hub 122 and is fixed thereto by a set screw 123. The shaft 108 and the wheel 120 are relatively rotatable and in order to connect them for simultaneous rotation a clutch device or wheel 124 is fixed to the shaft 108 near its right-hand end and is formed with inwardly projecting clutch teeth 125 adapted for cotiperation with the teeth 121. The clutch wheels 112 and 124 are so arranged -in respect to their associated clutch wheels that only one of said connecting clutch wheels 112 and 124 can be operative at a time. Thus when-the wheel 112 is clutching the wheel 109 and so connecting thelefthand ribbon spool to turn with the shaft 108 the wheel 124 is inoperative and the righthand ribbon spool is' consequently loose on the shaft. If the latch or detent device 116 be lifted and the shaft 108 be moved endwise toward the left, the right-hand spool 107 will be clutched to the shaft by the wheel 124, while the left-'hand ,spool will be freed by reason of the disconnection of the clutch wheel 112, thus reversing the direction of the ribbon feed. The shaft 108 is a ribbon driving or power shaft which is adapted to be turned automatically or by hand through connections to the shaft 84. Said connections comprise a pinion 126 which, as best appears from Fig: 5, has a slidable connection with the shaft 84 but is also compelled at all times to rotate with said shaft by reason of a radial pin 127 fixed to said pinion and engaging the groove 85, the construction being such that the pinion may be shifted endwise along the shaft while retaining its operative connection therewith. Said pinion meshes with a gear wheel 128 (Fig. 1) which surrounds and is fixed to the clutch wheel 124. Flanges or disks 129 fixed to the sides of the gear wheel 128 embrace or engage loosely with the sides of the pinion 126 and compel the pinion and gear wheel to remain constantly in mesh no matter what lateral shifting movements take place. For example, when the shaft 108 is moved endwise in either direction to reverse the ribbon, one or another of the flanges 129 will compel the pinion 126 to participate in this movement, the. pinion sliding along its shaft 84. Said shaft, it will be recalled, receives rotary movement either from the finger piece 86 or from the train of connections that are' actuated from the pawl and ratchet devices 39,22. These rotary movements are communicated to whichever of the ribbon spools 107 is clutched to the shaft 108 at the time. For convenience of rapidly turning the spool by hand, the train of connections between the shaft 84 and the ratchet wheel 22 may be broken by moving said shaft'endwise toward the left to disconnect the pinion 87 from the pinion 90. During this movement the shaft will slide through the pinion .126, which will retain its connection with the gear wheel 128 so that if thereafter the shaft secured at one end by screws 132, the freeends of said hooks being pointed as indicated at 133 to facilitate the piercing of the end portions of the ribbon. Between the spools the ribbon is controlled by a guide plate 134 which is slotted as indicated at 135 to receWe headed screws 136 by which said guide plate is adjustably secured to a pivot plate 137 that is provided with ears 138 formed with holes which fit over the shaft 108 between the ribbon spools. Thus the guide plate is pivotally supported on the ribbon spool shafts. Said guide plate is formed at its side edges just below and forward of the spools with guide slots 139 through which the ribbon passes in its downward course, and at its lower side the guide plate is formed with diagonal guide slots or turning bars 140 over which the ribbon passes and by which it is directed inward at right-angles in a horizontal direction and so as to be opposite the printing line on the platen, this horizontal portion of the ribbon between the turning bars 140 being the printing portion thereof. The guide plate 134 between the turning bars and above the printing portion of the ribbon is cut away, as indicated at 141, leaving a large open space. It will be understood that when the parts are set as in Fig. l, the lefthand ribbon spool will be turned to wind the ribbon thereon, the ribbon at the same time being drawn off the right-hand spool and the horizontal printing portion of the ribbon advancing toward the left from the righthand turning bar to the left-hand turning bar. This printing portion of the ribbon is interposed between the work sheet 105 and the tally strip 80 so that when the right-hand side of the main work sheet receives type impressions through the main ribbon controlled by the carrier 106, the tally strip will ,simultaneously receive imprints through the auxiliary ribbon 130. By reason of the pivotal mounting of the guide plate 13 1- it may be swung up to carry the auxiliary ribbon away from the platen and leave the front or printing face thereof fully exposed. The upper edge of the plate 134 is beveled or sharpened, as indicated at 142, to provide a severing device for the tally strip which is led upward between the forward feeding roll and the central feeding roll through the space or slot-way formed 5 between the shaft 108 and the back of the upper portion of the plate 134. Leaf springs 143 pivotally secured on the cross rod 71 outside the plate 71 extend forward and cotiperate at their free ends with the outer flanges of the. auxiliaryribbon spools, exerting suflicient pressure on said spools to prevent undue turning movements-thereof, said leaf springs thus serving as brakes.
With the parts constructed and arranged as described, when the tally strip is at the right of the printing point the main sheet only will receive type impressions, and an actuation of the line space handle will serve only to advance the main sheet, the tally so strip and auxiliary or carriage carried Fill),
bon feeding devices remaining unafiected. When, however, in the course of the leftward movement vof the carriage the tally strip is brought opposite the printas ing oint, actuation of the usual print ing instrumentailities will cause type impressions to be made on the main sheet and duplicated on the tally strip, and when thereafter the line spacing handle 37 is operated, it'will not only advance the main sheet a unit of line space distance but will automatically advance the tally strip to the same extent and will simultaneously cause a, feeding movement of the auxiliary ribbon.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
Whatl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen provided with a work sheet, line spacing mechanism for advancing said work sheet, ribbon mechanism, and means rendered operative by traveling movements of the carriage for bringing said ribbon mechanism'into control of said line spacing mechanism.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen' provided with a work sheet, ribbon mechanism for said work sheet, separate hand controlled actuating devices for said mechanism, and means brought into play during the carriage travel to render said devices efiective on said ribbon mechanism.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen thereon, ribbon mechanism carried by said carriage, separate hand actuated devices for said ribbon mechanism, and means brought into play by traveling movements of said carriage for rendering said devices efiective on said rib bon mechanism.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combi-v nation of a carriage, a carriage carried ribbon, means f\ r advancing the same comprising a finger piece or key inefiective in certain positions of said carriage; and stationary means for rendering said finger piece effective, said means operating during traveling movements of the carriage.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination ofa platen, carriage carried ribbon, pawl and ratchet devices for turning said platen, pawl and ratchet devices for feeding said ribbon, a single finger piece for actuating both sets of pawl and ratchet devices, and means for automatically withdrawing one of said sets of devices from the control 01 said finger piece and for returning said set to the control of said finger piece.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, carriage carried ribbon, pawl and ratchet devices for turning said platen, pawl and ratchet devices for feeding said ribbon, and a single finger piece for actuating both sets of pawl and ratchet devices, said finger piece being inoperative to feed the ribbon when the platen is in certain positions.
5i. a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen, carriage carried ribbon, ribbon mechanism, line spacing devices controlled by a single finger piece operative to turn the platen and feed the ribbon, connections between said ribbon mechanism and said finger piece including a shaft provided with a finger button, said shaft being movable endwise to break the connections between said mechanism and said finger piece, and said ribbon mechanism then being operative by said finger button independently of said line spacing devices.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; a platen; carriage carried ribbon spools; a shaft on which said spools are loosely mounted; clutch devices fixedly connected with said ribbon spools; other clutch devices fixedly connected with said shaft, said shaft being movable end- Wise to render alternately operative .the clutch devices thereon; pawl and ratchet devices; and a train of gearing connecting said pawl and ratch'et devices with saidshaft, said train comprising a gear wheel fixed to said shaft, and a pinion slidable during ribbon reversing operations, said pinion remaining constantly in mesh with said gear wheel.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen, carriage carried ribbon spools, a shaft on which said spools are loosely mounted, clutch devices, said shaft being movable endwise to alternately connect 1t with said spools through said clutch devices, and a train of hand actuated gearing for turning said shaft, certain members of said train having 'an unvarying endwise relationship with sa1d platen and certain other members being.
shiftable endwise of said platen when said shaft is shifted. H
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of ribbon spools, ribbon feeding mechanism, and a ribbon guiding plate arranged to guide the ribbon between said spools, said plate also operating as a paper severing device;
1l.-In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, carriage carried ribbon spools, ribbon feeding mechanism, and a ribbon guiding plate pivotally supported on said carriage and provided with a paper cutting edge.
12, In a, typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, parallel ribbon spools supported onsaid carriage, ribbon feeding mechanism, and a guide plate pivotally supported between said spools and provided at its sides with turning bars, the upper edge of said guide plate being beveled to provide a paper severing device.
