application filed October 9, 193.1. Seia No. '653,495.
Be itlnio-wn that Geenen Marianen, a the United States, residing in the city-and county of. San Francisco and State et. California, have invented new and use- Iniprovenients in Signs, of which the for attaching-the' characters' of the' sign to to insure-.the letters re distance apart.
Other objects will appear in the follovving A'se the cable, which is simple in construction,
and by ineens of which the characters may be easily and qnickly'att'ached toythecable and removed therefrom, and which admits of' the characters being adj-usted'to various positions on thel cable.
je. further object is to provide an adjust.- E able device for spacing and separating let-l tefs on a cable, `which is so constructed as mailling the required specication.
The invention. consists of the parte and the .construction and combination ot parts as hereinafter more fully y described and claimed, having reference to the .accompany-- ing drawings, in 'Which-- Figure 1 is a View showing a .sign constructed 'in' 1accordimce' with my invention.' .Fig. 2 isa rear vview ofa letter showing the lmanner of 'attaching ittoa cable. 'Fig'. 3 vis afdetail elevation of the adjustable spacing device shown. in connection with an end letter. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section/on the the upper edge of .let-ter. Fig-'ois an gendfvieW-of sajme. Figff'is a detail .showing-the manner of mounting the cable `:it--
tachnient on a reticulated sign.'
lthe drawings, A represents a cablel of any desired character, which is stretched be Jtween any. suitable meansfo support ;.beingv here-shown as 'attached atrits ends to. trees A 'Suspended 'from the cable-A are a series of letters, or i other characters, indicated at 2, .which forni.
' body of the sign; these characters T oeing tera-tv formed o1E a reticulatedniateriah spaced soins ,distance v apart;
ab netting, `perforated sheet metal,
` .or the like, so as to otter as slight resistance .to air currents as possible and thereby vprevent wind strains on the cableft to a ,large degree gtthe netting being mounted onga Wire fia'nie 2 lheet installer..othersuitablemateria'l may be employed in tornnng ythe body of the letter ii desire".
The essence of this invention resrdesfin the means by, which the letters or characters 2are attacned to the cableA., Whichineans comprises a plate 3 adapted tobe attached to theupper' edge of the letter" and on `which are formed a series ofhorizontallve tending tangs 4,' which tangs" Yteitendr at right angles lto the plate 3 onbothfsides thereof vand are' here shown yas struck ,therefrom, but may be` formed separatelyandfat? tached to the plate in any desired, i nanner,
-The outer ends of the tangs Ltare adapted 'to be bent over the cable A,.asinc l icat,ed nv dotted'lines-in Fig.' 6so as to securely aft-.
tach the letter 2 to the cable and yet' admit of a swingingmovement ofthe letter.
Formed on the back'of the plate ,3 is a.
A bar? is' prof' as indicated at 6 in Fig. 3.'
vided, on the lower edge of Whiclgr-y are formed sei-rations '8 adapted to mesh with l and be engaged'iby the serrations 6 in the channel 5 so as to `prevent longitudinal movement of the vbar 7 v.vheii'tlie latter isv placed in the channel. v
.The purpose of the bar 7 is to act as a separator. or spacer to retain -theletters 2 a prescribed distance apart; the bars 7 being placed in thechannels 5 in therequired posiwhich contact. the upper edge of the bar and," prevent vertical' movement' thereof.
y tion and retained therein-by the tangs t v lWhen in position, 'a bar 7 extends on 'each side of aletter, as shown in" Fig-2, and .one bar-'on each letter is provided'with a sleeve .9 'on its outer end into which the outer end of the bai on the' adjacent-letter extends so to forrnaconriection'thet Wilt 'prevent the adiacent bars-rnovin outlet alinement with eachother and at ythe saine tinieadding rigidity to 'the sign. ln the caseot an' end letter, as in lig, the bar, f7, may extend vfrom one side 'only of the letter,`-but in thecase o intermediate letters, the bar entends from bot-h. sides, as before'.deacribed.` "it 1s ies obvious that the plate 3 .andr'tangs ligniay be attached lthereto bjya "fastening i0, asy
in Fig. 7, orin any other suitable l manner; and it evident that the' shape.
release the cable and. admit o f the letter bre-l ing taken therefrom or adjustedthereon.
The connection between the letter and the cable, by means 'of the tangs 4, is such that the letter will be free to swing back and forth in relation to the cable so as to re` lieve the latter from excessive strains when the wind is strong; the tangs 4 being sufficiently loose on the cable to form a pivotal mounting for the letter. I
A collar ll may be attached -to thecable A adjacent to the 4end letters'of the sign to prevent longitudinal movement of the letters on the cable.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A sign comprising a series of characters, a cable, means for removably attaching the characters to the cable embodyingtangs mounted on the character and'adapted t'o be bent around the cable, meanslif'eld in position by the tangs for spacing the characters apart comprising 'adjustable bars7 and means on lthe character forming a channel in which the bars are supported. A
2. A sign comprising a series of characters, a cable, means for removably attach. ing the characters to the cable embodying in pwhich the/bars areA supported, said chanvn'ePfrrmed, with Va serrated bottom, and serrations 4on the lower edge of the bar engageable with the seratedbottom of the channel. 3. A sign comprising a. series of characters, a cable, means forremovably attaching the characters to the cable each of said characters being provided with an adjustable bar on each side thereof and extending laterally outwardtherefrom, one of said bars on each character being provided with a sleeve on its outer end in which the outer end of a bar of an adjacent character is held whereby the characters are maintained in alinement with each other and increasedl rigidity is given to the sign, said characters having notches and saidfbars having notched surfaces adapted to be removably held in cooperative relation Wlth said-notches whereby they are Iadjust-ably retained on the sign characters. l
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnessesc j GEORGE MAYERLE I/Vitnesses:
EUGENE SUA'ocI, C. H. HANSEN.
