Description

GEORGE BRECK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
GAS-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 19, 1912.
Patented Jan. '7, 1913.
Serial No. 684,879.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BRECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gas-Fixture, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a gas fixture and its object is to provide a burner which is the imitation of the inverted type and which is an improvement on the invention disclosed in Patent No. 958,357, granted to me May 17, 1910.
An object of the invention is to provide means whereby the tarnishing of the top of the globe holder is prevented.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for the prevention of the polymerization of the gas used and an efiect to which acetylene gas is liable if overheated.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the pendent tube is prevented from being overheated.
Another object of the invention is to so locate the stop cock as to prevent undue heating of the same, as well as to preventthe accumulation of considerable air in the pendent tube, which necessitates waiting for an interval of time after the stop cock shown in said patent is opened before the gas will li ht.
Another object of the invention is to provide a nozzle key cock which will be small enough to avoid casting a heavy shadow.
A still further object of the invention is to line the shade holder with a material which will act as a reflector in order to im prove the lighting effect and acts as a heat insulator as well.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of the gas fixture showing the position of the pendent tube with respect to the supporting arms of the globe holder. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the position of the pendent tube with respect to the globe holder. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the stop cock, and Fig. 1 is a plan view thereof.
The numeral 1 represents a gas supply pipe to which is connected a gas fitting 2, into which the pipe 1 is screwed and which has a pendent tube 3 screwed thereinto at right angles to the pipe 1. The pendent tube is bent so that it is at a considerable distance from the top for a portion of its length, but as it passes downwardly it passes into a slot 4 in the top or globe holder 5, said slot permitting the pendent tube to be placed behind one of the arms 6 of the top or globe holder 5, said arm protecting the pendent tube from the heat passing through the vents in the globe holder.
The top or globe holder is lined with a non-conducting fire proof material 7 which is of a light color or white in order to reflect as much light as possible. This fireproof material is asbestos, magnesia, or any similar substance. At the upper portion the top or globe holder is secured to the fitting 2 by means of a screw 8, a suitable fire proof and heat non-conducting material 9 being inserted between the fitting 2 and the top or f globe holder 5, in order to prevent the trans mission to the fitting 2 of any heat absorbed by the metal of the top or globe holder 5.
The globe may be of any desired shape :and it is held in place by means of screws 11. The pendent tube extends downwardly within the globe to the stop cook 12, above which is the usual aero acetylene burner tip 13. This stop cock is composed of an outer casing 14 into which the pendent tube is secured and which is provided on the upper side thereof with a threaded nipple 15 for the attachment of the burner tip 18.
The cut-off comprises a frusto-conical plug 16 having a handle 17, a pin 18 and a screw 19, said screw holding the frusto-conical plug in place and making a gas tight joint with the casing of the stop cook. The plug is provided with an opening in a plane to register with the opening extending from the tube 3, and in the center of the plug there is an axial opening 20 which extends through a small opening in the screw 19, thus permitting the gas to flow through the plug and into the burner tip.
From the above description it will be seen that the stop cock is placed below the burner so that it does not receive heat directly therefrom. The arms of the top are protected from the heat by the fire proof material with which they are lined, and at the top this fire proof material has its underside so formed as shown at 21 as to direct the heat away from the burner outwardly through the openings or heat vents in said top. Even with the protection afiorded by the fire proof lining, the metal of the top or globe holder becomes warm after the burner has been lighted for a long time and to prevent this heat from being transmitted to the supply pipe, a non-conducting washer is inserted between said top or globe holder and the fitting 2. Between the globe holder and the fitting to which it is secured, there is an oppositely flared rosette 5, which is also filled with a fire proof material 7' in order to assist in the deflection of the heat away from the fitting.
In assembling the fixture the tube 3 is first screwed into the fitting 2, whereupon the rosette 5, washer 9 and bell 5 are secured to the fitting 2- by means of the screw 8, after which the heat resistant materials 7 and 7' are placed in position in a more or less plastic condition.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. An improved gas fixture consisting of a pendent gas tube, a globe holder having suitable ventilating openings and through which said tube extends, the material of said globe holder between two of said openings being placed vertically below that portion of the pendent tube above said globe holder, a burner tip carried by said tube, and a globe carried by said holder and within which said burner is placed, as described.
2. An improved gas fixture comprising a of said pendent tube, and a globe carried by the holder and within which the burner tip is placed, as described.
' 4c. In an improved gas fixture, a gas supply pipe, a pendent tube connected therewith, a globe holder secured thereto, a fireproof washer between the globe holder and the supply pipe, a fire proof non-conducting ll11- ing in said globe holder, a heat deflector between the globe holder and that portion of the pendent tube to which the globe holder is secured, a globe supported by said holder, and a burner tip on the lower end of the pendent tube within the globe, as described. in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of March A. 1912, in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
enonen BRECK.
