FOLDABLE BLANK BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1913.
Application filed December 2, 1911. Serial No. 663,630.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, ANNA L. Peon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Blank Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of boxes in which a series of cells are secured to a wrapper which is foldable over the cells,
It is the object of the invention to provide a box of the kind stated which is so constructed that the cells and the wrapper are collapsible into flat form for convenience in shipment, and which can be readily set up ready for use.
The invention also has for its object to provide a novel cell structure.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
-In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box set up and closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the wrapper swung open. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cell structure before it is folded.
folded. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the cell structure and wrapper folded.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the wrapper is a rectangular sheet of cardboard or other suitable stiff material which is foldable on the three dotted lines 10 to form the top 11, bottom 12, and sides 13 of said wrapper when it is placed around the cells.
The cells are formed of a rectangular sheet of the same material as the wrapper, said sheet being foldable on the dotted l1nes 14 to form the bottom 15, top 16, and side walls 17 of the cell structure. Adjacent to one of the longitudinal edges of the bottom portion 15 a fold is made on the dotted line v18to form a flap 19 which is bent upward and pasted to, the adjacent side wall 17.
In the bottom 15 are made cuts to form tongues 20 which are adapted to be bent upward to form the vertical transverse partitions of the cell structure. The free ends of the tongues are connected by a string 21 so that they may simultaneously be swung upward. A bend 22 is made in the sheet where the tongues join the body portion of space between the upstanding partitions 20 into two parts. A tongue as herein described is located adjacent to each hole 23. A bend 25 is made in the sheet where the tongues 24 join the body portion of the top 16, on which bend the tongues swing as on ,a pivot or hinge similar to the tongues 20.
. The bottom 15 of the cell structure is fastened ,or otherwise permanently secured to the bottom 12 of the wrapper.
The box'herein described is set up as follows: The wrapper is swung open, and the side walls 17 of the cell structure are swung upward into vertical position. The string 21 is now given a pull to swing the tongues 20 upward until they assume an erect posi-' tionand extend transversely between the side walls 17. The holes 23 and their companion tongues 24 coincide with the spaces between the ton cs 20 when the latter are in thelast described position. The eggs or other articles may now be placed in the cells,
which is done by inserting an egg through one of the holes 23 and then pressing down the companion tongue 24 with the next egg and placing the same alongside the first egg.
The tongue 24 is .bent down into vertical position and serves to space the two eggs apart. Two compartments are thus formed in the spaces between the partitions formed by the tongues 20. After the compartments are filled the wrapper is placed around the cells, and tied or otherwise fastened, which completes the vpackage.
When not in use, the tongues 20 may be folded down against the bottom of the wrapper, and the remainder of the cell structure may also be folded flat. The
wrapper, can also be folded flat into a top and bottom part, one of the side Walls being at the top and the other side wall at the bottom. The folded cell structure lies be tween the top. and bottom parts of the folded wra per, and a small and compact package is t us had for convenience in shipment.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, but it will be evident that various changes in the structural details may be resorted to without a departure.
from the invention.
1' claim:
A receptacle comprising an inclosure and a cell structure, said cell structure comprising a top, a bottom, and side walls, the bottom having a flap at one of its longitudinal edges which flap is secured to the adjacent sidewall, and the top wall having a series of holes and pivoted tongues adjacent thereto, said tongues being bendable downward, whereby a series of holes is produced in the top wall alongside the aforesaid series of holes, and pivoted tongues on the bottom wall, said tongues beingf adjustable to assume an erect position transversely between the side walls, and the aforesaid holes and roaaoio first-mentioned tongues coinciding with the spaces between the second-mentioned tongues when the latter are in erect position, a flexible connection between the'second-mentioned tongues for placing the same simultaneously in erect pos tion; and an inclosure comprising a bottom secured to the bottom of the cell structure and closing the openings formed by the tongues thereof when the late ter-are placed in erect position, side walls fitting the side walls of the cell structure, and a top carried by one of the side walls of the inclosure and foldable on top of the cell structure to close the holes therein.
