Be it known that I, THOMAS B. HENNESSY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,y county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and use--` ful Canopy for Mortuary Purposes, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relatesuto a canopy for mor- -tuary purposes and has for its object the production'of a port-able canopy the frame of which shall bestrong and durable and capableof standing by itself for supporting not only the canopy but suitable draperies A further obj ect of my invention is to provide a frame as mentioned which may be quickly knocked down ,f or taken apart, and

Referring now to the drawings, l, 2and3 designate members of extensible tubular standards, cone clutches 4 and 5 being pro- -videdto hold said members in any adjusted position. A; tripod 6 is provided for each standard, each clutch of which comprising male and female conical portions 7 'and 3 respectively. Each y end member 13 of the top or canopy frame comprises bent ends 13 to which the side members V14 of the topvframe are connected by means of buttons 15 provided in the ends 13vv and slots 16 engaging said buttons provided in said side members. After the slots 16 are engaged with the buttons 15 slidable sleeves 17 mounted on the side members 14 are moved over the ends 13. Buttons 18 by means of which curtains may be attached are provided on the side members 14 and and end members 18. Each side member 14 is foldable, pivots 19 and slidable sleeves 20 being provided as shown in detail in Fig. 14. In order to support the canopy a bridge is provided which comprises members 21 having bent ends 22 which are adapted to fit into slots 23 provided in the members 14. The members 21 are hinged by means of a pivotal screw 24 as shown in detail in Fig. 3. vIn order to prevent the center of the bridge from settling a stop 25 is provided in one of the members 21 and a slot 26 in the other member to engage said stop. A support for a corpse is arranged within the canopy as shown.

The lower curtain is attached to the lower curtain rod 27 by means of buttons 18 similar to the buttons provided in the top frame. This curtain rod is arranged on substantially the same level as the corpse support and is foldable, the pivot 19 and sleeve 20 being provided as in the members 14 to accomplish this purpose. The curtain rod y27 is also ex- `indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 10 which makes the connection secure. The rod 29 is longitudinally adjustable in the lug 33 in which the set screw 34 is screwed. The lug 33 is integral with the clamp 35 which is vertically adjustable on the member 2 by means of the thumb screw 36. Anauxiliary support 37 is provided for the rod 29. Thus it is apparent that the curtain rod 29 is laterally and vertically adjustable. Vhite curtains or draperies are used, the same being semi-transparent, and in order to produce a co-lored eect lavender or other colored curtains are placed behind the white curtains, thus producing a richer effect than when colored curtains alone are used.

While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved canopy, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such changes and altera-tions as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

AHaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a device of the class described, end standards, brackets adjustably mounted on said standards, extensions on said brackets having horizontal transverse perforations, arms extending through said perforations, lugs on said brackets below the perforations in said extensions, said arms being adapted to rest on said lugs and a curtain rod extending between said arms and detachably connected thereto, substantially as described.

2. In a device of' the class described, a pair of standards having sockets in their upper ends, horizontal arms each having one end turned downwardly to engage one of the respective sockets and the other end turned vertically upwardly, a canopy frame, and downwardly extending socket members on said frame adapted to receive the upturned Y ends of said arms, substantially as described.
