To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS S. FLATAU, a citizen of the United-States3 residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in metallic barrels and the like, and the object is to provide means whereby the ends and body of the barrel can be connected together to prevent liquid from passing through the joints which connect the ends and body together.'
A further object is in constructing the ends or heads by providing the heads with outwardly taperlng walls, and to these walls the cylindrical body is connected. -In this way,
arrels can be made of diflerentlengths or sizes, by simply making the cylindrical body of the required size and connecting it to the wallsof the heads, which form a part of the barrelbody.
Another object is providing a stay rod which connectsthe ends or heads together and holds the barrel body between the heads during the operation of bending the edges of the walls .over a roll or bead formed on the body for'connecting the body and heads together.
In the accompanying dra'wings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the manner of connecting the heads to the barrel body.
A, represents the barrel, and 1, 1 indicate I the'heads or ends. The heads are provided with recessed ends 3, and the walls 2 of the heads taper outwardly. The outer ends or edges'of the walls 2 are bent outwardly for formin a groove or pocket.4. The ody 5 of the barrel is made cylindrical and the ends of the body are bent or rolled over wire or metal hoops 6 which extend around the exterior surface of the body, for forming a bead which is received-in the groove 4 of the wall 2. The heads 1 are screwed onto the stay rod 7, and the body 5 is inserted between the ends of the heads. After the beads of the body 5 have entered the pockets 4 of the walls 2, one of the heads is turned upon the stay rod until the body is firmly held be tween the heads, then the barrel is placed in a machine and the outer edges of the walls 2 are bent or rolled around the beads of the sealing substance, is poured around the beads and outer edges ofthe walls 2. A metallic barrel comprising abody portion and end members, hoops received upon rolled, the end members provided with walls, the inner edges of which are grooved and lipped, in which grooves the edges of the body portion are received, and the lips adapted to be bent down upon the rolled edges of the body portion and soldered, forming a-permanent and tight joint.
