Be it known that we, Gros'r CAnLso and tloHN VIDEEN, subjects of the King ot Sweden, residingat Boone, in the county ot Boone and State of iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, oi which the following is a specification.

- This invention embodies improvements in that type of tables comprising tops made in a plurality ot' sections whereby the table may be used as an ordinary fiat top table when the to; sections are peculiarly adjusted and whereby uponoperation ot suitable means one ot the top sections may be elevated so as to form an auxiliary support quite advantageous for ordinary dining service, and affording a convenient arrangement ot' top members for other purposes.

The present invention resides particu larly in the special way in which the members of 'the top ofthe table are assembled and their peculiar cooperation -when in use.

For a full understandin-g of the present invention, reference is to be had to the fol lowing description and to the accompany- .inv drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional view of a table embodying the invention showing the top sec.- tions arranged in their normal positions permit-ting of use of the invention-'as an ordinary iiat top table; Fig. 2 is a sectional View similar to Fig, l, the outer movable top section beingelevated and the inner topv section also raised flush with the main top section; Fig. 3 is a sectional viewtaken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Describing the invention specifically, a table embodying the same consists of the pedestal l having the central tubular standard 2 in the lower portion of which is mounted a coiled spring 3. The standard 2 carries. at its upper end a frame l which supports the top of the table, the latter com-- prismg a main top section 5, an 'inner movable (op section 6 and an outer movable top section '7. The main top section 5 is provided Wit-h a large central openingI and the top sections 6l and are of a size and shape conforming with that of said opening.v The trame d has a recess e at its central portion beneath the opening in the main top section 5 and also corresponding in shape preferably therewith. rihe inner movable top section t5 is centered with respect to the section 5 by the supporting post 8 which carries the top section 7, the latter being secured in any substantial manner to the upper' end of the post 8. At the outer end of the rod l2 is a handle i4 located near the. outer edge of the top section but below the same, convenient to be grasped for operation. A coiled spring 15 encircles the rod 12 and normally tends to project the locking member 13 into engagement with the post f5. The annular shoulder ll on the post 8 tapers toward its lower end.. thereby providing an inclined portion in .eontaot with which the locking member l'- y1s adapted to operate. The inner movable sect-ion 6 is furthermore loosely mounted upon that portionof the post 8 between the shoulder 1l and the top section 7.

7 and 8, said member 13 may be released and the spring 15 will force the locking member into engagement with the lower groove 10 of the post 8, thereby locking positively the top sections 6 and 7 in their elevated positions. It will be apparent-that to restore the top sections of the table to t-heir original or normal positions, the locking member 13 must be withdrawn from the groove l0 and by downward pressure on the may be forced downwardly against the tension ofthe spring 3 until locked again by the member 13 enteringthe groove 9. The inclined or tapered form of the shoulder 11 permits the same to be moved by the locking member 13y without necessitating that the latterA be held positively out of engagement with the post 8.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

In a table of the character described a pedestal, u single tubular standard carried thereby and forming the entire support for the top portions of the table, a horizontal frame rigidly mounted on the upper end of the tubular standard and provided upon its upper surface with a central recess, a main top section mounted upon the horizontal frame and provided with a central opening in permanent registration with the central recr "s of the horizontal frame, a depending surrounding flange formed upon the main top section and serving to completely conceal the horizontal frame from a lateral view,
