CIGAR-CLIPPER.

To all whom 25 may concern.'

Be it known that I, EDWARD BRIGHT, a citizeny of the United States, residing in the city of Morris, in the county of Grundy, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Clippers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a cigar-clipper of great simplicity which is nevertheless effective and serviceable, and which obviates the danger of breaking or marring the wrapper of the cigar which is inserted into the clipper.

In the drawing Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved cigar clipper. Fig. 2, is a plan bottom view of the operative portions of said clipper; Fig. 3, is a bottom view ofthe vibratory part of my clipper, and Fig. 4, is a sectional view in a plane indicated by line 4 4 in Fig. 2.

In the drawings 5 is a frame mounted on a suitable base, and provided with raised rear portion 6, on the roof 7 of which is preferably mounted match-box holder 8. To the lower side of roof 7 is pivotally attached, by screw 9, vibratory part 10 which projects through opening 11, located in front of portion 6, over the top of the forward portion of frame 5. The roof 12 of this forward portion is provided with an opening 13, one side of which is preferably formed by the slanting edge 14 of a knife 15 which is attached by means of screw 16 to the under side of roof 12. Vibratory part 10 at its front end is provided with a tube 17, the lower end of which terminates in a tapering hole 18, in the front end of part 10, which is, in its ordinary po-sition, located immediately above opening 13, and is sized and shaped so as to accommodate the pointed end of a cigar-inserted point downward into tube 17 and to permit the point to protrude through opening 13. The rim of hole 18, on the side opposite to edge 14, is formed by edge 19 of a knife 20 which is held in recess 21, on the under side of part 10, by means of screw 22. Opposite to edge 19 there is fastened to the side of frame 5, by means of screws 23, a lug 24, the upper part 25 of which projects above roof 12, and is formed with a nger rest 26. To the inner side of frame 5, opposite to the one which carries lug 24, is attached, by means of screw 27, extension spring 28, the other end of which is fastened, by means of screw 29, to member 10. 10 against the vertical edge of opening 11 which is opposite to lug 24; and this edge is so located that when member l0 rests against it, hole 18 is located directly above opening 13.

lThe operation of my device is as follows -A cigar 30 is inserted, point downward into tube 17 so that its lower end protrudes through opening 13. lThe operator thereupon placing his thumb against rest 26, and his first linger against tube 17, or in some other convenient manner, pushes tube 17 toward lug 24, thereby incidentally bringing knife edges 14 and 19 together like the edges of a pair of scissors, causing the point 31 of cigar 3() to be clipped 0E, and to fall into the inclosed space under frame 5 from which it may be removed in any convenient way. Spring 28 automatically returns member 10, and all parts attached thereto, to their ordinary position.

It will be seen that it is not necessary for the operator to exercise any pressure on the cigar wrapper in pushing the cigar into p0- sition nor even to hold the cigar while the clipping of the point is performed; but that a mere loose insertion of the cigar into tube 17 will bring and hold it in proper position, thus doing away with the breakage of the wrapper, which so frequently results with other cigar clippers from the necessity of pushing the cigar into the clipper and against a releasing lever, etc.

I claim 1. In cigar clippers, a frame having an elevated portion, a horizontal opening in the side of such elevated portion, and a vertical opening in the roof of the lower portion of the frame, in combination with a vibratory member pivotally attached to the underside of the elevated portion, projecting through said horizontal opening over said vertical opening, and being provided, above said vertical opening, with a vertical tapering hole and a tube projecting upward from said tapering hole; knives attached to said frame and vibratory member so as to form opposing edges of the respective vertical holes therein; and means to normally hold the vibratory member in such position that said vertical openings register with each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
