Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 12, 1912. Serial No. 731,009.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO C. RAssMANN, of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Track- Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in track hangers and more particularly to such as are adapted for use to support a track for an elevated carrier,one object of the in vention being to so construct the hanger that it is brought under the rail so as to form a rigid support therefor, and so that the rail may be rigidly and firmly secured to the hanger.
A further object is to so secure the track to the hanger as to prevent possibility of vertical displacement of the track.
A further object is to so construct a track hanger and to secure the track thereto in such manner, that the hangers may be installed before securing the track thereto and so that a broken hanger may be readily replaced without necessity for removal of any portion of the track.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the track hanger showing the manner of securing a track in place thereon, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line w-w of Fig. 1.
1 represents a hanger having a general semi-elliptical shape,the body portion 2 of which is provided with an integral strengthening rib 3 and at the upper end of said body portion, a head 4: is formed, said head having a hole 5 for the passage of a suitable bolt or fastening device, whereby the hanger may be secured to a suitable overhead suport.
p The body portion 2 is constructed at its lower end with a short horizontal arm 6 which constitutes a seat for the rail 7, the latter being of the I-bea1n type, having an upper head 8 constituting the tread portion and a lower head 9 forming the base portion of the rail. The free end of the rail-supporting arm 6 is provided with an upward extension 10 provided at its upper end with an inwardly projecting flanged lip 11. The upward extension l0with its flange or lip 11 embraces one side of the lower or base head 9 of the rail, said lip being disposed over said head at one side and bearing, at its free edge, firmly against the webportion of the rail, thus preventing lateral displacement of the rail in one direction and also assisting in preventing vertical displacement of the rail.
The horizontal arm 6 of the hanger is provided at one side of the rail seat with a vertical hole 12, and at one side of said hole, the lower end of the body portion 2 is so constructed as to form a beveled shoulder 13 located at and extending upwardly from the end of the horizontal arm 0 posite the up ward extension 10 thereof. 1i. bolt 14 passes through the hole 12 and is provided at its upper end with a head 15, the lower end of said bolt being threaded for the reception of a nut '16 which, when screwed home, will bear against the under face of the horizontal arm 6. It will be seen that when the bolt is drawn down by tightening the nut 16, the head 15 will be forced by engagement with the beveled shoulder, toward the rail and said head will be tightly wedged against the web of the rail at the juncture of the'base head therewith.
With my improved construction, the upward extension 10 of arm 6, with its flange or lip 11 and the bolt head 15 will cooperate to hold the rail firmly to its seat, preventing displacement of said rail in all directions.
It will of course be understood that any desired number of hangers may be employed, and my improvements will admit of all the hangers being installed before the rail is placed in position. Should any hanger break, it may be readily replaced by a new 7 one, without the necessity of removing any portion of the track. My improvements thus facilitate the installation of the trackway and its hangers and also the replacing of hangers.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A hanger for an elevated track comprising an upright body portion provided at its lower end with a horizontal arm forming a rail seat, said arm provided at its free end with an upward extension constructed to engage one side of the rail, a bolt passing through said arm and having a head, and means for crowding said head toward the V rail to crowd the latter against the upward extension of said horizontal arm.
2. A hanger for an elevated track, comprising a body portion provided at its lower end with a horizontal arm and having a beveled shoulder adjacent to the juncture of said arm with the body portion, said arm having an upward extension provided with an inwardly projecting flange, and a headed bolt passing through said horizontal arm adjacent to said beveled shoulder, whereby the head of the bolt may engage said shoulder and cause a rail to be clamped between said headed bolt and the flanged extension of said horizontal arm.
