LEWIS CUTLER, OF SPRINGFIELD,MASSACHUSETT Letters Patent No. 104,938, darteJuZy 5, 1870.
IMPROVED SPRING- BIElD-BOTELOIV!4 The Schedule referred to in these Letters Ratent and making part c! the same To all whom it may concern v Beit known that LLEws CUTLER, of Springfield, Hampden county, Commouwealth of lYIassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Spring Bed- Bottour; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a f ull and exact `description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawing- Figure I is a.' side' view;
Figure I1 is a plan view;
Figure III, an end View; and Figure IV a detail view. y
. In construction, I place, attached to the lower part of the frame of a bed-bottom, a corresponding number of springs to the ends ofthe slats used for holding the mattress or bed. These springs A are attached at their smaller ends by loops'B andstraps C, so as to form a prolongation of the slot D, and are securely riveted or nailed to the underneath side of the frame of the bedbottom, so that the are of the spring will project out from the frame. The shape of these springs and the manner of fastening them to the slats is peculiar'.
I make them 'of elastic sheet-metal, wide at their lower ends, where secured to the frame, and from thence gradually tapering to tbeirvother ends, wherethey are bent into a small loop, vto hold the loop B, the gcneral shape 'of the whole spring being circular or curved, and the increased width of metal from the smaller end causes the 'spring to offer more resistance as the weight upon the bed is augmented.
. The end of the spring is fastened to the slat by 'a loop, B, working in a strap secured firmly to the end of each slat, and the loop allows the spring to work freely, and gives the slat more play than if it were directly attached to spring, and without any tendency on the part ot' the spring to. become detached from the slat by its own motion, as would otherwise be .the oase.
This combination of peculiarly-formed spring and loop, with slat, allows the' latter to have plenty of horizontal, as well as verticalplay. v
Ou the inside of the sides of the frame, I pivot four legs, E, (two on a side,) and so .near the front and end pieces of the frame that, when the legs E are turned down into position to support the bed, the end-pieces, together with -pivoted pieces on the under side of the sides of theft-ame, having shoulders iu oneend, form slots, to hold them rigidly in place, and forming legs easily adjustable, and admitting of the bed bingmade, at will, into a cot-bedstead.
Now, 11a-fing described my invention,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent,.is 4
The combination of the tapering spring A, the loop B, and the strap C, the slot D, and the frame, having the adjustable legs E lill, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
LEWIS CU'ILER.
