Be it known that we, FRANK CHASE and ALBERT L. Smncnrrmnnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Qincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Join Operated 'Weighin and Vending Machines, of which the clawing is a. specification.

The pointer, a, is actuated by weight ap spring h. The pointer plied to the scale platform, A by means of link or arm, H, attached at one end to one or more leverssuch as usually employed to support the scale platform of weighing mechanism, and at the opposite end to a spring, h, stationarily supported at its oppositeend; thus weight applied-to the scale platform will draw down arm, H, and extend or lengthen spring, the amount of weight applied.
The eye bar h threaded to arm H enables adjustment to be made between arm H and a is pivotally supported on a shaft 2" journaled in a bracket '1'- of plate I. Shaft 11 carries a pinion I which meshes with. and is driven by a segrne Jpivotally supported upon a stud y b which is carried b to indicate the weight a bracket J which bridges the spring The segment J carrice an arm K which normally engages a notch 70 in a pivoted locking bar K, to lock the pointer to zero position until released by the introduction of a coin, which release is efl'ected by the plate 5 engaging the lower end is of barK' to tilt the bar and release arm K. The arm K is also adapted to engage any one of the teeth 70 of bar K after the coin has bcen released by lever C to prevent the pointer being shifted to a. new position in an attempt to weigh more than one person with a single coin. Segment. J also carries a slotted arm L to which is attached a head L adjustable the slot Z by means of a thumb screw threaded into the end of arm L and pivotally attachedto head L. The arm L is normally held in the position Fig. 8 by a spring 1 attached to an car on arm L which throws segment J over into contact with the screw Z which serves as a stop and can be adjusted to bring the pointer over the zero mark on the dial. A pivoted cylinder M and plunger m attached to arm L serve to pneumatically cushion the movement of the pointer in either direction when the weight is suddenly applied or removed from the scale platform.
A spring N stronger than spring 1 is attached at one end to the arm H and at the opposite end to an ear promoting from the adjustable head L. This spring as the arm I-I moves downwardly yieldingly and mildly pulls upon the arm L without moving the arm L untilafter the coin is released when it moves the arm L and rotates the pointer on the scale platform. The adjustment of the head L on arm L shifts the pull of spring to or from the axis of segment J and serves as a delicate means to conveniently and readily standardize the scale, or cause the pointer to move the requisite distance over the dial to accurately indicate the weight, and also to reh, in proportion to within the limits of i adjust the same from time to time as required.

The mechanism herein illustrated and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of our invention.
Having described our invention what we claim is: v
1. In a mechanism of the character described, a 'weight indicating'pointer, a pivotally supported arm adapted to move said pointer, mechanism connected to said pivotally supported arm to yieldingly hold the pointer to zero position, able on said arm, a member movable in proportion to the weight upon the scale, a yielding connection between said two last mentioned members, a member to hold said pivotally supported arm and pointer in position to record the weight, and means to release said holding member.
2. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a weight indicating pointer, an arm adapted to move said pointer, a locking member adapted to engage said arm and through said arm to normally lock said pointer to zero position and also adapted to lock the pointer through said arm to position to record the weight on the scale, mechanism to release said locking member, a member adjustable on said pointer moving arm, a member movable in proportion to the weight upon the scale, a yielding connection between said two last mentioned members, and means to return said pointer moving arm and pointer to initial position.
3. In a mechanism of the character indicated, a weight indicating pointer, a pivoted arm adapted to move said pointer, means to yieldingly hold said pointer and pivoted arm to initial position, a member ad uStable on said pointer moving arm, a member movable in proportion tothe weight upon the scale, and a yielding connection between said two last mentioned members.
4. In a'mechanism of the character described, a weight indicating (pointer, a pivotally supported arm adapte to move said pointer, means to yieldingly hold said pointer and pivotally supported arm to initial position, a member movable in proportion to the weight upon said scale a yielding connectingmember attached to said pointer moving arm, a locking member adapted to lock said pointer moving arm to different positions, and mechanism to release said locking member. 7
