ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grinding and polishing, and more especially to cutlery scourers; and the object of the same is to produce a gage which may beslipped onto one blade of a pair of scissors or shears, so that the same may be caused to stand at any desired angle to the grindstone, hone, strop, or other grinding or abrading surface. This object is carried out by the construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of this invention, showing it applied to the blade of a pair of scissors or shears, and the whole being drawn across a hone. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the shear gage alone, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which this gage is made.
In carrying out my invention, the body of the gage is stamped from apiece of resilient sheet metal into a blank of the form shown in Fig. 4:, pierced with a hole at the point 1. The blank is then bent obliquely upward on a transverse line indicated at 2, then outward at right angles on the line 3 to form a narrow shoulder 4: which in use stands over the rear edge of the shear blade 13, thence bent again upward in an oblique angle at the line 5, curved into a roll 6, and
then carried down in a lip 7 whose edge 8 when applied to the blade B rests a ainst the back thereof as shown, and hol s the face of the blade against what might be called the jaw 9 which isthat portion of the plate between. the fold lines 2 and 3 and which tapers slightly as'shown so as to conform with the shape of the blade B. The hole 1 is threaded, and downward through it ispassed a set screw 10 whose head 11 is milled, and on the shank of the screw is a jam nut 12 which maybe run down against the plate to hold the screw in adjusted position.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 18, 1912. Serial N0.-691,576.
Patented Jan. a, rare.
In use the gage is slipped onto the blade as shown in the drawings, the jaw 9 lying against the fiat face of the blade, the shoul der 4 resting against the upper edge there% of, and the lip 7 bearing against the rear of the blade with someconsiderable force due to the spring action of the roll 6. The beveled edge of the blade is then placed against the stone or other abrading surface, and the set screw adjusted so that when its tip touches the surface the latter will contact accurately with the bevel of the blade. Thereafter the grinding or honing is done in the ordinary manner, and from time to time the gage is slipped along on the blade,
so as to stand opposite that part thereof which is being ground.
By preference the device will be made of steel, finished in nickle or'otherwise to suit the taste, and the size and exact details' of arts are immaterial. What is claimed as new is: :1. The herein described shear gage, the same comprising a metal plate bent upward on a transverse line into a jaw which is wider at one edge of the plate than atthe other and adapted to stand against the face of the blade, thence bent outward into a shoulder adapted to rest against the rear edge of the blade, thence carried upward into a spr ng roll, and thence carried down- 'ward into a lip adapted to lie against the back of the blade; and means the lower edge of said jaw at a given disfor holding tance above theabrading surface.
2. The herein described shear gage, the same comprising a metal plate bent upward into a jaw standing oblique to the body of i the plate and adapted to lie against the face of'the blade, thence continued into a spring roll, and continued from the roll into a lip adapted to lie against the back of the blade, said body being pierced with a threaded hole; a set screw passing downward through said hole, and a jam nut on the set screw.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto. setmy hand in presence of two subscribing wib nesses.
