FAN ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Patented Dec. 31,1912.
Application filed April 20, 1912. Serial No. 692,094.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs N. T. GUERTIN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Xashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to fan attachments for rocking chairs and the like, and consists in the construction, hereinafter described and claimed, whereby two kinds of motion are transmitted to a fan incidental to rocking movement of the rocking chair or other rocking device to which my improvements are applicable.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating my novel fan attachment as properly applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the manner in which the rockers of the chair are connected with the base which is preferably though not necessarily employed. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the handle of the fan is connected with the forwardly extending shaft. Fig. at shows the connection between the two shafts that are disposed at right angles to each other.
Similar letters and numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I employ a base in the form of a frame 7), and on the side bars of the base I arrange the rockers a of the chair 0 which, 7967' so may be of any construction compatible with the purpose of my invention. The said rockers a are provided with upwardly tapered vertical apertures, Fig. 2, and in saidapertures are arranged upright rods 1, pivoted to the bars of the frame 6, and each equipped with a washer at, a nut 3 and a spring that is interposed between said washer and a second washer arranged adjacent the rocker. By virtue of this construction the rockers a are strongly connected with the base, and yet are free to move within certain limits on the base in the manner common to rocking chairs.
Journaled in suitable bearings 17 on the back of the upper portion of the chair is a transverse rock-shaft 16, equipped at 15 with a rearwardly extending crank arm, and pivoted to and extending downward from said arm 15 is a pitman 14. This pitman is pivoted at its lower end on a pin 13 carried by a crank arm 13 that is fixed on a transverse shaft 11. The said shaft 11 is journaled in a support 7 connected in a fixed manner with one rocker. The shaft 11 is provided at the opposite side of the support 7, with reference to the crank arm 13% with a pinion 6, and intermeshed with the said pinion is a gear segment 5. The said gear segment 5 is pivoted to and arranged alongside the support 7, and fixed to and extending rearward from the gear segment is an arm 8. This arm 8 is pivotally connected to the upper end of a link 9, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to a bracket 10, fixedly mounted on the frame Z). By virtue of this construction it will be manifest that incidental to oscillation of the rocking chair, the shaft 16 will be rocked about its axis through the medium of the train of elements mentioned, viz: the link 9, the gear segment 5, the pinion 6, the shaft 11 with its crank arm 13, and the pitman 14 interposed between and connecting said crank arm 13 and the crank arm 15.
Disposed above and extending forward from the rock-shaft 16 is a rock-shaft 25 which carries the fan cl, the handle of the fan being secured as shown in Fig. 3, in a clamp, and the said clamp being equipped with a wing-nut 29 and socket portions 28 to receive a ball 28 on the forward end of the shaft 25, whereby the fan may be adjustably fixed in various ositions relative to the shaft 25, as occasion demands. The rear portion of the shaft 25 is journaled in a sleeve 20, best shown in Fig. at, and the said sleeve is provided with a depending threaded stem 20, and is also provided with a clutch face 20 Said clutch face is opposed to a complementary clutch face 20 on a bracket 18 that receives the stem 20 and the said bracket 18 is positioned on the shaft 16, and is adjustably fixed thereto by a set screw 19. Thus it will be manifest that the shaft 25 can be positioned at different points in the length of the shaft 16, and by loosening the wing-nut 21 and manipulating the sleeve 20, said shaft 25 can be disposed at various angles of inclination to the shaft 16 as occasion requires, and this without interfering with the rocking of the shaft 25 about its axis.
Fixed by a set screw 24 on the shaft 25 is a grooved segment 23 that receives in its groove a cable 26 that is suitably connected at its upper end to the said segment 23, and is connected at its lower end to the pin 13. Surrounding the shaft 25 and connected at one end. to the sleeve 20, and at its opposite end to the lateral tubular projection 23 on the segment 23, is a coiled spring 22. The said coiled spring 22 serves incidental to the oscillation of the chair to rock the shaft 25 in one direction about its axis, while said shaft is rocked in the opposite direction by the cable 26 connecting the pin 13 and the segment 23. Thus on rocking of the chair the fan will. be swung up and down with the shaft 25, and also with the shaft 16 to which the bracket 18 is fixed, as before described. It will also be manifest that dining the said movements of the chair, the shaft 25 and the fan (Z, the said shaft 25 will. be rocked about its axis in the sleeve 20, and hence the fan will be swung up and down transversely of the chair.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that by reason of the two kinds of motion transmitted to the fan, the person occupying the chair will be adequately fanned and kept cool, and this without effort on the partof such person other than the ordinary effort that is necessary to the actuation of a rocking chair.
I have entered into a detailed description of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention, in order to impart an exact understanding of the said embodiment in all of its details. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction, as in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as do not involve departure from the scope of my invention as claimed. For instance in lieu of the specific base Z), a base of any other description may be employed such as the floor of an apartment, without involving departure from my claimed invention. Also, the shafts 16 and 25 may be mounted on any movable device suitable to the purpose, and may be connected through the pitman 14: and the cable 23 with any other suitable device with respect to which the first-named device is movable without involving departure from the scope of my claimed invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Pat ent, is: y
1. The combination of a base, a rocking device disposed upon and yieldingly con nected with the base, a transverse shaft journoeaoar naled in hearings on the rocking device and having a crank arm, a shaft carried by the rocking device and having a pinion and also having a crank, a pitman connecting said crank with the first-named crank, a gear segment intermeshed with said pinion and pivoted to the rocking device and having an arm, a link pivotally connected with the said arm and the base, a bracket on the trans verse rock-shaft, a. sleeve adjustably fixed on said bracket, a shaft journaled in said sleeve and equipped with a fan and a grooved segment, a coiled spring surrounding the shaft and connected with the sleeve and the grooved segment, and a cable connecting the grooved segment and the crank on the shaft that carries the pinion and adapted to lie in the groove of the segment.
2. The combination of a rocking device, means with respect to which the device is adapted to rock, a fan, coo i erating devices on the rocking device and said means for actuating the fan in one manner incidental to the rocking of the device, and means connected with the fan for actuating the fan in a different manner incidental to the rocking of the device.
3. The combination of a rocking device. means with respect to which the device is adapted to rock, a shaft join-naled on the rocking device, cooperating devices on the said means and the rocking device for rocking said shaft about its incidental to locking of the device, a shaft movable with the rock-shaft when the latter is rocked and also movable about its axis independently of the rock-shaft and carrying a fan, means for turning the fan shaft in one direction, and means for turning the fan shaft in the opposite direction; the latter means being connected with the actuating device on the rocking device.
l. The combination of a movable device, means with respect to which said device is adapted to move, a fan, cooperating devices on the movable device and said means for actuating the fan in one manner incidental to the movement of the device, and means connected with the fan and said means for actuating the fan in another manner incidental to the movement of the device.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
