To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY C. GAMMETER, av citizen of the United States, residing at Bratenahl, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Composing- Sticks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My prior application #360,77 7, filed March 5th, 1907, of which this is a division, shows a type case having parallel separated ribs for holding columns of grooved type, the lowermost type resting on an abutment narrower than the type and the retaining ribs being omitted just above the abutment so that the lowermost type may be drawn off the abutment forwardly. That application also shows a composing stick of peculiar form having a fork adapted to straddle the abutment at the base of the type column and enter the grooves of the type and form means for drawing the type off and afterward retaining it so that a line of type may be assembled in the composing stick. Such composing stick constitutes the subject matter of the present application.

My composing stick comprises a split, tubular body having a fork at its end, the slot of which alines with the slot of the tubular body. This is shown in the drawing hereof and will be hereinafter more fully described.

The drawing is a perspective view of my composing stick, showing also a type and a supporting block or abutment, for holding it, like the abutment of the type case of the application mentioned.

As shown in the drawing, A represents the body of the composing stick, which is a split, or slotted, cylindrical tube, the slot being through the circumference and parallel with the axis. The slot is designated a. At the receiving end of the composing stick is a fork consisting of two tines A A defining a slot a between them. This slot (4 merges with and forms a continuation of the slot a by reason of the inner edges of the tines alining with the inner edges of the body A, on opposite sides of the slot. The fork and the body are shown as made of one integral piece. This is accomplished by cutting off diagonally the rear of the tube. The tines thus provided are shown as curved so as to Serial No. 585,213.

B, in the drawing, indicates the abutment of the type case, or some similar stop, and C a type resting thereon. In assembling the type, the composing stick is moved by hand to give its fork an upward movement, causing the fork to straddle the block B and enter the grooves of the type C, and then a forward movement to draw the type off of the block, and the type drops by gravity down the slot of the fork and passes into the main slot of the stick. In this way, by moving the composing stick around by hand from one channel to another of the type case and giving it a combined upward and forward movement, a line of type is assembled in the stick. 1:

To form a gate preventing the exit of the type from the holder, until desired, I have provided a spring clip D embracing the tube, as shown, for something over half a circumference. When this clip is in the position shown in the drawing, it blocks the exit from the stick. The removal of the clip unlocks the slot, or this result may be accomplished by turning the clip about the axis of the tube until the slot is between the separated ends of the clip. WVhen the slot is opened, the line of assembled type may be passed out of that end of the tube. This particular gate is shown, described and claimed in my copending application No. 497,905, filed May 24, 1909 for a typeholder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A composing stick having a tubular body with a longitudinal slot through the surface thereof, and a fork at one end of the stick composed of two projecting members which have between them a slot alining with and forming a continuation of the slot of the body.

2. In a composing stick, the combination of a cylindrical tubular body having a slot in the circumference parallel with the axis, and a fork at one end of the body having a pair of members with a slot between them, which slot forms a continuation of the slot of the body, the slot of the body and of the fork lying in the same plane through the axis of the tube.

3. In a composing stick, the combination with a cylindrical tubular body having a slot in its circumference extending parallel with its axis; of a fork at one end of said body, comprising tines extending in alinement with the opposite edges of said slot.

4. In acomposing stick, the combination with a cylindrical tubular body having a slot in its circumference extending parallel with its axis; of a fork at one end of said body, comprising tines extending in alinement with the opposite edges of said slot, the fork being made of the same integral piece of material as the tubular body, the back side of the tube being cut off at the fork.

5. In a composing stick, the combination with a cylindrical tubular body having a slot in its circumference extending parallel with its axis; 0f a fork at one end of said body,

comprising tines extending in alinement with the opposite edges of said slot, said fork Qcurving from the axis of the tube on the slotted side thereof.

6. In a composing stick, the combination of a cylindrical tubular body having a slot in its circumference extending parallel with its axis, a fork at one end having a slot communicating with the slot in the body, and a gate for controlling the exit of type from the stick.
