Description

Aitated gisten stent dimite.-
ANDREW THALHOFER, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
The Schedule referred to in theae Letters .Patent and making part of the name To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ANDREW THALHOFER, ot South Bend, in the county ot' St. Joseph and Stateof Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating Awnings; andvI do hereby declarevthat the following is a fill, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form' a part ot' this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists inthe construction and arrangement of a device for operating awnings, asv will he hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to'enahle others skilled in the art to which my invention.appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which-.-
Figure l is a front view, and
Figure 2, a side view.
A represents the front of store, orother place where it is desired to hare an awning.
0n the outside of' the house, or front A, is secured a frame, consisting ot' two horizontal braces, B B, inclined bars, C C, and connecting-bar, D, the braces and inclined bals meeting at their outer ends, Where the conneetingrbar' is attached.
This frame is of thesame width as itis desired to `have the awning, and the bars 0 C having the same inclination it is desired to give to the awning.
AA1: or immediately above` the inner or upper ends ot the inclined bars C Gis placed a roller, E, in suitable bearings, upon which roller the awning.;r a is rolled.
At each end of thc'roller is iormcda pulley, b, to which one end of a oord, e, is secured, said cord passing around a. pulley, d, on lthe end ot' the connectng-barD, and its other end secured to the end of a rod or har, j, which is scwed into cr otherwise' affixed to the outer end of the awning a.
The pulleys b b being stationary on tle ends of the roller E, it will readily he seen that, when said 'roller is'rotated in one direction, the cords ee will be wound up on the pulleys b b, and the awning unrolledmuntil'it covers the frame BIC D. When, on the eon'trarylthe roller is rotated in tlie opposite direotiontiietords are unwonnd and the awning rolled up.`
The mechanism for tnrningthe roller E is as iollows p'er end ot' an upright shat't, G, having suitable hear ings on the outside ofthe front A.
On the lower end 'of theshaft G is a similar niiterwheel, lo, which gears with another wheel, m, on theouter end of a4 horizontal shaft, I. p
This shaft passes through the front A, and is, in-
side ot the saine, provided with a crank, H, for oper-` ating the same.v
It will now readily be seen that, by the use of this crank from the inside of the "house, the awning on the outside can be let down or hoisted up at will.
Above roller E is hinged a hoard or shelf', J, for the purpose of protecting theawnng from rain when it is rolled up.
Having,r thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, andl desire to securev by Letters Patent, is
The combination ofthe frame B U D, roller E, with awning a and pulleys b b', cords e e, puileys d, shafts G I, wheels g, h, c, k, and fm, crank H, and hoard J,
all constructed and arranged to operate substantially inthe manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aix mysignatnre in presence of two witnessesA ANDREW THALHOFER.
Witnesses:
einer?. PFLnonR, Sr., W. G.- Gannon.
Upon one end ot' the roller E, outside of the pulley`
