To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK O. "WOODLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Picker for Labeling-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being made therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a novel construction of label-pickers, designed for employ ment in labeling machines of the class described in Letters Patent No. 941,178, and other machines of similar character, wherein the labels are adhesively taken from a bottom-delivery label-holder and carried by the pickers to the place of presentation for affixment to the article to be labeled; the ob- 'ect of my present invention being to provide a label-pieker having means for retammg any glue that may work through or around the pickers, and preventing dripping of glue upon the under portions of the labeling machine. Also,,to provide a picker comprising a face member and concave trough or hollow member beneath said face member for receiving and holding the waste glue that escapes from the picker faces, said members being conveniently separable and readily reassembled. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view of a label-picker embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at line X X on Fig. 2. Fig. l is a transverse section at line Y Y on Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 illustrates a modification wherein the attaching head is integral with the pickerface-plate.

My improved label-picker is composed of a top-plate or picker-face member 3 and an underlying trough-like body or concave drip-receiving member 5. Said parts are secured together in such a manner that they act as a unitary picker, but can be readily separated and reassembled without diflieulty.

A preferred form of my invention is shown in Figs. 1 to 1 of the drawing. In this the underlying receptacle 5 is made the main body, and provided with a slotted head or ear 6 for the support and attachment of the picker upon a picker-carrier, to which it is affixed by a bolt in similar manner to the ordinary pickers, as per dotted lines Fig. 1.

The top-plate 3, which may be made of the shape required in any instance, is provided with a glue-applying surface, or surfaces, G; also, when required, with perforations or holes 4 for receiving the lower ends of the pack-supporting guide-stakes of the labelholder. The trough-like member 5 is made to approximately conform to the general shape of the picker-plate; or is of somewhat greater area, and it underlies said topplate, forming a trough, catch-basin or concavity of sufficient depth for avoiding interference with the ends of the stakes, and serving as a receptacle suitable for receiving and containing any drippings of glue that may come from the picker-face when in use; thereby preventing drip upon the underlying parts of the labeling machine, in case too free a supply of glue is given to the pickerfaces.

In this specification the term glue is intended to include glue, paste, gum, mucilage or other adhesive substance, such as may be used on labeling machines for sticking labels upon packages or bottles.

The top-plate 3 rests upon the underlying body 5 by small lugs or bosses at its end, as at 7 and 8.

One of the parts is provided at its outer side with a projecting joint-seat 10, preferably rectangular, while the other part is provided with an overhanging lateral projection 12, having a seat-surface that countermatches with the seat 10, and is furnished with interlocking means, as lip 13 and shoulder 14, or equivalent devices that guide and keep the parts'in proper relation to each other; while they are firmly held together by a clamping screw 15 that passes through a vertical slot 16 in the projection 12 and screws into a threaded opening in the seat 10. By partially turning out the screw, sufficient to release the interlock of the lip 13, the picker-face or top-plate 3 can be conveniently separated from the body 5 to facilitate cleaning the slot, permitting the projection to pass from the screw without entirely removing the latter. The parts can then be readily replaced by reversing the operation.

The cars or head portion 6 can be formed integral with the under part 5, or with the top part 3, as may in any instance be desired.

In Fig. 5 there is shown a modification in which the head is formed integral with the top-part 3; also showing a thumb-head screw 51 and dowel-pins 17 instead of lips, for the countermatching joint seats. The rear end of the trough-like receptacle is furcated to receive the neck of the pickerplate, as at 18.

It will be understood that in practice these-improved label-pickers are made in right and left forms and used in pairs upon the labeling machine, in connection with a picker-carrier of any suitable well known kind; the manner of manipulating the labels thereby, being substantially similar to that heretofore practiced, need not be herein further described.

I claim- 1. A label-picker for labeling machines, provided with a detachable glue-applying face member, and an underlying body supporting said face member, and projecting horizontally beyond the edges thereof, with an intervening drip-receiving space between the supporting body and face member, and

means attaching said face member to said body.

2. A label-picker for labeling machines, consisting of a longitudinal trough-like body chambered along its upper side, and having a head or slotted ear for attaching to a picker-carrier, and a horizontal picker-face plate supported upon said body, and means for securing and maintaining said pickerface plate in proper fixed relation and alinement with said supporting body.

3. A labeling machine picker, consisting of a supporting body-member formed as a longitudinal trough-shaped arm, provided with an attaching head, and having a drip concavity open along its upper side; and an interlock guide-seat and lug; in combination with a removable pickerfaceplate having countermatching interlock lugs, a glue-applying top face, and small under bearing-bosses whereby said picker-face plate is mounted upon the supporting bodymember, and a clamping means detachably securing said countermatching seat and lugs together.

A label-picker comprising a pickerface member combined with a drip-receiving member adjacently underlying said face member, and rigidly united thereto, said drip-receiving member conforming, horizontally, approximately to the contour of the p1cker-face member, but projecting be yond the edges thereof, its upper edge being disposed adjacent to the edges of and slightly below the plane of the picker-face.

5. A label-picker, comprising a perforated picker-face-plate having a glue-apply ing surface, and an underlying body portion having a concavity along its upper side adjacent to and underlying said picker-faceplate, the two parts being unitedly joined at one side by outstanding positioning lugs fitted with countermatching joint-seats upon said body portion and picker-faceplate, and a clamp screw for detachably securing said picker-faceplate and body portion together for unitary operation.

The combination in a labelpicker, of a picker-plate having a glue-applying top surface, a drip-receiving member beneath said picker-plate, said parts having, at the side thereof, countermatching joint-seats with interlocking means that engages one with the other, a clamp-screw for binding or clamping said joint-seats firmly together, and an attaching ear integral with one of Said parts for securing the label-picker to a picker-carrier in a labeling machine.

7. A label-picker for labeling machines, composed of two longitudinally extending elements disposed horizontally one above the other with an intervening space, and provided with inter-matching oint members that maintain the two parts at a given relation laterally adapted for retaining any adhesive drip escaping from the picker face, said elements being horizontally arranged in respect to each other, and a fastener de vice adapted for securing and conveniently releasing one element to and from the other.
