Description
'T. EARLE.
Fruit Jar. No; 104,839. Patented June 28, 1870.
WZ-iness es: 7 I 2/6. 73 01 UNITED STATES TIMOTHY EARLE, OF VALLEY FALLS, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 104,839, dated June 2 5*, 1570.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY EARLE, of the village of Valley Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit- Jars.
My invention consists in a novel compound spring-bail which delivers vertical pressure upon the cover, and a lateral pressure at each of its ends, to secure its connection with the jar, and also in the combination of the same with recessed eyes in the sides of the jar, for receiving the endsof the bail; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the, drawing furnished, is a clear, true, and exact description thereof.
The drawing represents, partly in perspective and partly in crossvertical section, one of my improved fruit-jars.
A is the body of the jar. B is the cover. 0 is a duplex inclined plane with a notch at its apex, and forms a part of the cover. D is the compound spring bail. The ring-springs No. 1 are so turned in the wire as to secure a vertical pressure upon the inclined plane 0, while the ring-springs No. 2 cause the lower ends of the bail to more closely engage with the sides of the jar. The lower ends of thebail turn inward. E in each instance represents a recess in the outer sides of the jar. These recesses are opposite each other, and receive the inwardly-curved ends of the spring-bail. Between the cover and the top edge of the jar any desirable packing may be used.
I am aware that a great variety of spring bails has heretofore been made; but I am not aware that any before my invention were ever constructed in which two separate spring effects were produced for more effectually accomplishing the compression on the cover and connecting the bail and jar.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The compound springbail D, with its ringsprings Nos. 1 and 2, arranged to bear with a vertical and lateral inward pressure, in combination with the recessed eyes E in the sides of the jar, substantially as shown and described.
TIMOTHY EARLE.
