Description

H. W. STONE. V PUNOTURING, DISPENSING, AND SEALING DEVICE.
APPLIOATION rum) SEPT. a, 1911.
1,048,226. Patented Dec. 24, 1912.
Witnesses J HENRY W. STONE, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
PUNCIURING, DISPENSING, AND SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 1000.24, 1912.
Application filed September 5, 1911. Serial No. 647.527.
To all whom. it may (m/("era Be it known that I, HENRY \V. STONE, a citizen of the United States ot XLlllCl'lUil. residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in luueturing, Dispensing. and Sealing l)evices, ot' whieh the 'lollowiug is a s 'ieeilieation. i
This invention relates to a puneturinfg. dispensing, and sealing deviee. partieularlv adapted for use in dispensing eondensed r evaporated milk or eream. though it is ot eourse (apahle ol use in. dispensing any littuid itrom a can.
The ohjeet ot the invention is t prov de a strut-tare adapted to he 'l'oreed through the top of the an and to have an air-tight en gage-meat therewith, together with a val\e .vhieh permits the passage ot liquid from the am when the run is inverted hut serves to seal the diseharge passage when the ean is returned to an uliright position.
Further ohjeets and advantages oi the inveution will he set forth in the detailed description \Vliltli now 'lollows.
In the amicompanyiup: drawing, Figure l is a sectional view of the deviee eon trueted in aeeordanee with the invention. and hie. is a side elevation at right angles to Fig. i
like numerals designate (.(H'lespontlingi parts in both of the figures ot the drawii .3.
Referring: to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a ran sneh as is ordinarily employed tor containing eondensed or evaporated milk.
The puncturing and dispensing deviee. tiomprises a head (3. a threaded shoulder T. and a quill-like shank it. the lower end ot the shank S heing oeveled at i to t'orm a puneturing point It) at the lower end ol' :ll l shank. 'lhe shank has a dis har g e p.-r--. ae'e it formed therethrough and i-; slotted along one side at ti. t r a purpose hereimit'ter deserihml. the upper end of the passaigge it terminates in a llaringr valve seat 1 upon whit-h a hall valve It is adapt d to have a seati t A eage lfi is soldered or otherwise seeured to the head t3 and IH'tH'l lts means for retaining the hall valve ill in operative position. A rnther or other tlexihle washer ltl is disposed hetween the under side of the head (3 and the top of the ran It will he seen that the memhers ot the cage 15 are formed of stout material. and that the upper portion of the cage lies ahove the ball valve. The. side members of the age are disposed vertieally. and this cage provides a portion tor the user to strike against with a hammer or other tool in forcing the shank through the material of the ram, and without striking the check valve.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it desired to dispense mill; from the can 5, the structure shown in Fig. 2 is forced through the top of the ran, the point it) making the ueeessary out for this purpose. After the shank 8 has been forced downwardly far enough for the screw threads 7 to take a hold in the top of the ran. the deviee rotated to sorew it into the top of the (-an and to therehy press the washer it; between the head (3 and the ran. 'lhis tornls an air-tight; joint. at this point. it the ean he turned upon its side or inverted, the eontents will flow through the passage 11. it heing understood that inve sion ot' the can causes the hall valve ll. to move away 'l'rom the seat. 13. This hall valve. however, returns to its seat when the tan is again turned to its upright position and serves to seal the ean. The slot 1:. is provided to permit all ot' the contents of the ean to pass therefrom. in other words. a l'ter the contents oi the can get low. the slot 12 stil' provides an entranee to the pas age ll.
it is a well known 't'aetv that evaporated o condensed milk rapidl v deteriorates it' left exposed to the air. The stri'ieture herein slluWil and described not only provides a highly etlieient means for puni'turing the ran. hut serves to seal the ran ext-opt when the e ntents theit-ot' are lieingr discharged.
t-wm the ttFItfjUlllfj deseription. it, will he .--t't'll that simple and ellieient means are herein provided for a eoinplishingr the ohie 'ts ol' th invenlioinhut while the elements sh wn and deserihed are well adapted to serve the purpo-=es t r nhi h the) are int nded it is to he uinlerstood that the invention is not limited to the preeise eonstriu'tion set forth. hut ineludes within its purview sueh Changes as may he made within the seope oi the appended elain'is.
Having deserihed my invention. elaim is:
1. In a deviee ot' the eharaeter described, the eomliiination with a tuhular member. eomprising a shank having a piereing point in its lower end. a head having a valve sea what l formed therein at its upper end and a threaded shoulder between the shank and the head, of a compressible Washer located beneath said head, there being a slot formed through one side of said tubular member throughout the shank and the threaded shoulder, a ball valve coacting with said valve seat, and a cage carried by the head for retaining said ball valve in position.
. 2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a tubular member comprising a head portion, an elongated shank portion and a threaded shoulder portion, disposed between the head portion and the shank portion, the lower extremity of the shank portion being sharply beveled to form a piercing point, and the shoulder portion and the shank portion having a continuous vertical slot formed through their Wall, the upper end. of the head portion being provided With a concave valve seat, a ball valve seated upon said valve seat, a cage comprising arched members which overlie the ball, and which are rigidly secured at their lower portions to said head, said cage serving the double purpose of preventing accidental displacement of the ball, and providing a driving element upon which to drive in forcing the piercing point of the shank into a can.
In testimony whereof I atl ix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
