Description
" (No Mqdel.) I V C. B. LONG.
VALVE STOPPER. 7 Nb. 570,671. Patented'NomB, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLINTON E. LONG, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
VALVE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,671, dated November 3, 1896.
Application filed October 2, 1895. Serial No. 564,448. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLINTON E. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Valve-Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to valve-stoppers adapted especially to be used on medicinebottles; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a sectional view of the neck of a bottle and a sectional view of the stopper and valve attachment.
The stopper 1 has running perpendicularly through it the tube 2. The upper end of said tube merges into the enlargement 3, said enlargement being provided with the outlet 4. The tube 2 is also provided with the cavity 5, which extends laterally therefrom, and the said cavity is provided with the cork 6, which constitutes an adjustable side of the cavity. The cork 7 is located in a perforation in the top of the enlargement 3. A perpendicular rod 8 passes through said cork 7 The lower end of said rod is provided with the bib 9, adapted to close the lower end of the tube 2, and in the enlargement 3 another bib 10 is mounted on the rod 8. Said bib 10 is adapted when the rod is pressed down to close the upper end of the tube 2. The upper end of the rod 10 is provided with a cap 11, between the lower side of which and the upper side of the cork 7, and surrounding the rod 8, is located the spiral spring 12. Normally said spring keeps the rod 8 up and the bib 9 against the lower end of the tube 2.
In operation the device works as follows: The bottle is taken in the hand and the cap 11 is pressed down by the thumb. This opens the lower end of the tube 2. The bottle is then inverted and the liquid therein will pass into the tube 2 and the cavity 5, (the upper bib 10 having closed the upper end of the tube 2.) The thumb is then taken OK the cap 11, and thus all the liquid in the-tube 2 and the cavity 5 passes out of the outlet 4 into a suitable receptacle. By pushing the stopper 6 in or pulling it out the amount of the dose can be regulated.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a stopper, a valve attachment consisting of a tube passing through the stopper, an enlargement at the upper end of the tube, said enlargement having an outlet; a rod passing through said tube and enlargement, the upper end of the rod extending above the enlargement; a bib located on said rodat the upper end of the tube; and a bib located on said rod at the lower end of the tube; said bibs adapted alternately to close the upper and lower ends of the tube; the lower bib normally closing the lower end of the tube; a cavity extending laterally from the tube and located between the points where the bibs come in contact with the tube; an adjustable side located in said cavity; said tube and cavity in conjunction with the bibs forming a measuring-chamber.
In testimony'whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLINTON E. LONG.
