To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEBASTIAN BAUMGABT- NER, a citizen of Switzerland, and resident of Z ollikon, in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, have invented a new and useful l orging-Maehine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to a forging-- machine which is adapted to be actuated by means of a motor and suitable gearing, the object being light construction and the provision of means whereby the number and force of the strokes may be Varied at will. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows an elevation of the machine, partly in section, and Fig. 2 shows a plan of Fig. l.
The standard 1 and two oppositely arranged and vertical U-shaped beams 2 of iron, each carrying two bearings 3,; constitute the frame work of the forging machine. The upper pair of the said bearings support a revoluble shaft 4 and the lower bearings carry a revoluble shaft 5. Mounted upon the shaft 4 is a double armed lever 6 of T section while shaft 5 actsas a pivot for a one-armed lever 7 havinga hub 8 which, by means of two wires 9, is connected to a ring 10 situated about half way between the ends of said lever 7 The purpose of this de-.

to prevent as far as possible its swinging in a horizontal direction. The free end of the lever 7 carries a hammer 11 the head12 of which is preferably of case-hardened steel and wedge shaped and attached to part 11 in a suitable manner. The-arm of the lever B lying above the lever 7 is connected with the latter by means of a plurality of oval shaped rings13 which are arranged within each other and which are adapted vto impart a certain springiness to the lever 7 and consequently to-the hammer when a stroke is delivered. The other end of the lever 6 has pivoted to it. a rod 14- which connects with' the crank pin 15 of a disk or wheel 16. The crank pm 15 1S made radially adpistable in the known manner by'means of a groove in the wheel, a screw spindle 17, mounted in the disk on the one hand and engaging with the pin 15 on the other, causing the stroke to be altered at will. Provision is further made of an anvil-bed 18- with a wedge shaped an-' vil 19 fixed thereon? The disk16 is keyed or otherwise mounted upon. a shaft 22 hearing in the frame 1 and carrying a pulley 23. The frame itself is provided with lugs 20 which with s'crews 21 afford the means to secure the machine in position.
In operation the forging machine acts as follows: Ont-rotation of the shaft 22 the hammer 11 is raised and owing to its inertia continues. to move upwardly even when the right-hand arm of the lever 6is beginning to move down again. The rings 13 are thereby compressed and thusassist in a quick return of the hammer imparting at the same time a certain springiness on the latter. The

Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a forging machine, the combination, of two oppositely" arranged vertical beams of U section forming part of the machine frame, an upper and lower pair of bearings carried by the beams and lying in a vertical plane, a revoluble shaft mounted within each pair of bearings, a double armed lever carried by the upper shaft, a one-armed lever pivoted to the lower shaft, means to stiffen the latter lever, oval shaped rings connecting the one armed lever with the above lying arm of the first lever, and means to rock the said double armed lever, all substantially as and for the purpose specified and shown.
