IMPROVEMENT IN DROP-HAMMERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN BLAGKADDER, of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have made certain Improvements in Trip-Hammers and I hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the construction and combination of the mechanism for raising the hammer at the pleasure of the operator; for holding the hammer when so elevated, and for tripping the same when it is desired to let it fall upon the material to be subjected to its action. The mechanical agencies employed for the attainment of the results above indicated are exceedingly simple and effective, as will readily be perceived by an examination of the drawing, to which, in order that my improvement may be more clearly understood, reference must be made, and whereon, at-

A is the frame employed for the support of the anvil, hammer, pulleys, shafts, gearing, levers, and the machinery more immediately connected therewith. B is the anvil, which is provided with the die a, and does not differ from those usually employed. 0 is the hammer, which is likewise provided with a die, I), and with a stem, 0, as is usual with most trip-hammers. The hammer O" is moreover provided with the grooves d, which serve for its vertical guidance upon the slides c. It is also provided with the ratchet indentations f, into which the bolt or catch 9 may enter at the pleasure of the operator to the end of holding the hammer at any desired position of its elevation, limited only by the length of the hammer, and from which the said bolt or catch g may be withdrawn when it is required to let the hammer fall. The catch 9 is held to the hammer by means of the spring h, and withdrawn therefrom at the pleasure of the workman through the agency of the treadle D and pitman and cranks therewith connectbearings i and z" resting upon the top of the frame A aforesaid. Upon the outer end of this shaft is the pulley F, and upon the inner end thereof is the cog-wheel G, provided with the crank H, to which a pitman or other suitable gearing may be connected for the transmission of motion thereto from any motive power of a capacity properly adapted to the size of the machine employed and of the work to be executed. 1 is the shaft, which is provided with one fixed bearing, j, and one movable bearing, k, which is allowed free lateral movement by means of the slots 1 and 2, but which, nevertheless, is held to the frame upon which it rests by the set-screws 3 and 4. Upon the outer end of the said shaft I is placed the pulley K, and upon the inner end thereof the cog-wheel L, which, as will be perceived, gears into the aforesaid cog-wheel G, and from which it receives its motion, to be furthermore transmitted, through the shaft I, to the pulley K. Both these said pulleys K and the aforesaid pulley F are grooved upon their faces, and when brought together at the will of the operator, by means of the hand-lever M, which, for this purpose, is made to actuate the movable bearing is, are made to-compress the stem between them, or to relieve the same therefrom at will, and thereby allow the hammer to fall through any space desired within thelimits allowed by the size of the machine.
The said pulleys K and F may or may not be grooved upon their faces in the manner herein shown and described, as may in practice be found most expedient.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following:
The construction and combination, substantially as described and shown, of the frame A, anvil B, hammer G e, pulleys FK, shafts E I, treadle D, with toggle-joint, bolts 9, ratchet f, lever M, gearing G L, and crank H, for the purpose set forth.
