Description

R. JAMIBSON.
FILLING GUIDE FOR LOOMS. APPLICATION FILED JULY15,1912.
Patented Dec. 24, 1912.
-* UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1.
ROBERT amt-neon, or HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, assmuon T DRAPEB, comum a or. nornnam, massaonnsn'rrs, A CORPORATIONOF MAINE.
FILLING-GUIDE FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec; l [912. Application filed m 15, 1912. Serial No. 709,335. i
To all whom it 'may concern: Be it known that I, ROBERT JAMIESON, a
Y citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of \Vorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement. in Filling-Guides for'Looms, of which the following description, in connection with a 'Itffreuently happens that cloth will be woven w ieh is very narrow in proportion; to the width of the cloth which could be woven upon a given loomf'and whenthat is the case there is a long, stretchof filling between the selvage of the cloth and the shuttle box. Occasionally this long stretch of filling will throw ahead as. the lay heats up and pass under the filling-fork, causing trouble when the filling iscaught.
In accordance with my presentinvention I provide a guide, which: is mounted'upon a convenient part or adjunct. of the lay, preferably the usual shuttleuard, and extended downward therefrom in front of the shuttle path to the raceway, to inl'erru t the filling should it tend to throw-ahea the guide being set at suclia point with relation to the fork that it will prevent the catching of the filling thereunder. The'g uide made adjustable laterally sothat itcan beKset in the position best suited to the conditions in any given case.
The novel features of my be fully described in the subjoined sp cification and particularly pointed out in't 1e following claims.
Figure 1 is a top plan viewof a sufiicient part of a loom to be understood, with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section thereof on the line 2--2, Fig. 1, looking toward the right.
Inthe drawing, 1 is the lay, having the usual race-plate 2, reed 8, reed-cap 4, and shuttle-guard 5, and. in Fig. 1 the inner ends of the opposite shuttle-boxes 6, 6 are shown,
has for its object the prorelatively to invention w ll with the temples 7, 7, the latter .being-s'etiin to acommodate the cloth being woven, which latter is shown as quite narrow in proper tion to the width of the loom.
My invention isapplicablefio single. or
double fork looms, and in Figbl I have shown the loom equipped with two fillingforks, indicated at .8, 8, and of any; usual orwell known structure,.formingno part of my invention. V
In accordance with my invention I provide a filling guide 9, made of a stripof plate metal, having a flattened u per end or head 10 provided on its under si e with a seat, 11,-;
Fig. 2, and with an aperture 12. ,The seat is adapted to fit over the shuttleguard 5 and head is clamped thereto by the plate 13, having asimilar and.op-
posed seat 14 for the guard, said late hav-L mg a clamping screw l5 ex-tende through,
the aperture 12 and set up by a nut 16. i
In side elevation the guide 9 extends frontward from the head 10 and is then downturned and curved rearwardly at its foot to rest 11 on the top of the lay'at the front edge o the race-plate 2, as clearly ,shown in Fig. 2. The guide is set laterally at such a point that it. will intercept the filling, if thrown forward, ata point near the fork, and will prevent the fillin from passing under or catching upon the ork.
From Fig. 2 it will be seen that the filling guide can be set at any desired oint between the fork and the selvage of t e cloth, to accommodate any of flie various conditions which may arisefin'j'iictual practice.
The shuttle 17 isv shown in Fig. '2 ijntheleft hand shuttle-box, the filling 18 extending therefrom to the slvage of the cloth behind the filling guide 9. Y
As will be apparent the guide is altogether out of the way of the shuttle, the
ork, or any of the working parts of the loom, it is not in the way of the weaver, and 100.
it is simple, effective, and can be constructed breakage and annoying delays.
The shuttle-guard on the reed-cap is 'a feature common to practically all looms, and it is of sufiicient extent to enable the filling and applied at a very low cost, saving filling guide to be positioned as desired, and for I that reason, and because of its convenience and the readiness with which the guide can be clamped thereupon I prefer toinount the guide on such shuttle-guard.
aping fully described my invention, t I claim as new and desire to secure by ,ulillGXS Patent 13:
.t. in a loom, a filling-fork, a lay having ce-plate, and a filling guide mounted y on the lay above the shuttle path the fillin -fork and having-a foot depending to and fixedly positioned with rela-. tion to the race-plate in front of the shuttle- Ward and thereby to prevent the filling from passing under or catching on the fork, while shuttle-path is unobstructed at all times.
in a loom, filling-fork, a lay, a longitudinally extended shuttle-guard thereon, a filling guide mounted upon the guard and having a foot depending in front of the 'shettie path down to the raceway of the lay,
to intercept the filling if thrown forward and prevent the same from passing under the fork, said guide having a head provided with a seat for the guard, a retaining plate having a similar seat, and a clamping device to clamp the head and said plate in place on P the guard. adjacent the fork. 8. In a loom, a filling-fork, a lay, a filling guide having a depending portion extended down to the path of the shuttle at the front thereof and fixedly positioned relatively thereto, to intercept the filling if thrown forward while leaving the shuttle path unobstructed at all times, a supporting member for said guide, carried by the lay and located above the path of the shuttle, and a device to clamp said guide rigidly in adjusted position on its support relative to the fork. path, to intercept the filling if thrown for and prevent such filling from being thrown forward under the fork.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT JAMIESON.
