PROTECTOR MECHANISM FOR LOOMS Filed Dec. 4, 1948 INVENTOR WILLIAM A.BLANCHARD W WW4 f M ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 20, 1949 a srm rnornoron MECHANISM non LooMs William A. Blanchard,
t Omissi n & Knbiv r e-e e rnq e This invention relates to improvements in protector. mechaziisrnsior looms and it is the gen; eral object of the mvenuen to provide such a mechanism withaniznproved form qf dagger which can be held securely the protector rod in adj sted anguler' position.
Fly shuttle looms ordinarily have some f orin of protectonmechenisrn to fiect iooni stoppage should the shuttlefailto box at the proper time in the 160m i 'l' ma in t se eeeheeisms employ a rod extending along the ley and haying fingers at the ends thereof for engagement with the shuttle box hinders a 'dhaving alsq dag ers for engagemenfwith sto e e v wide'loornsthere may be eyer'al daggers on the rod and it is desirable to e eble 'tdset these dag: gers in eligninent with each etherfor "a eretiori withtheinrespbtii e stopping mechanisms distributed alongthe breast t mpt the loom. While the invention to he set forth hereinafter is more particularly adaptable to wide looms such as those used for'the weaving of paper makers 0, mar:
felts, the invention is equally applicable t rower looms with qnly two daggers,
In order thet the daggers ma'y'befirrnly secured to the, protector rod bu'telsohe angularly adjust able thereon it is iinpfi rtflnt object of" the present invention to prqvide each daggerwit'h protector rod clamping sleeves or the like through which a clampingbolt passes. The latter when tightened forces "the sleeves against the rod to hold the dagger against angular'nioven ent rele tive to the'rod,
With these and other objects in iew which will appear as the description proceeds, the invenn s e i the e mhinat s and a n n of perts hereinaiter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein the invention is shown as applied more particularly to awide loom, F 1 is a rertiee t n thrwg a of s cm having the invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed plan View of the protector rod looking in the direction of arrow 2, Fig 1, showing four daggers,

This stoppage will preizent the shuttle if trapped in the shedfiiom breelging the warp threads.
Any of the usual ineans may be employed for holding the protectorrod yieldingly in position with daggersaligned with their bunter levers eing shown herein but orhe red H are newts on en Q ively entector rod I1 is provided with four daggers D,
but since all of these daggers are alike a detailed description will be given of but one of them.v
namely, the one at the right end of Fig. 2.
The dagger D comprises a body 25 having a pointed forward end 26 for engagement with the bunter lever It. The rear end of the body 25 is enlarged in a vertical direction as at 21 and has a horizontal bore .28 which snugly fits the protector rod ii. A second bore 29 extending vertically through the enlarged part 21 is preferably at right angles to the bore 28 and communicates with the latter but is located largely at the right thereof as shown in Fig. 3.
Fitting snugly in the bore 29 are upper and lower tubular clamping members or sleeves 30 and SI, respectively, which may both be alike. The bolt 32 extends through the tubular clamping members 30 and 3i and has a head 33 which engages the under side 34 of the bottom clamp 31. The latter preferably extends a slight distance below the bottom 35 of part 21 of the dagger body. A clamping nut 36 is screw threaded on the upper end of the bolt 32 and a look washer 31 preferably of a diameter not exceeding the outside diameter of the upper member 30 may be located between the latter and the nut. V
The upper clamp member 30 has the lower part of one side thereof formed with an arcuate wedging surface All out preferably on the same radius as that of the protector rod, and the upper part of the lower clamp member is provided with a wedging arcuate surface 41 similar to surface 40.
In assembling, the rod I! will be fitted into bore 28 and the body 25 slipped along the rod to its correct position. With rod l1 extending partly into bore 29 the upper and lower tubular clamping members will then be inserted into the bore 29 with the wedging surfaces 40 and M facing adjacent parts of the curved or cylindrical surface of the protector rod [1. The bolt 32 is then passed through the two wedging members and the nut 36 tightened to clamp the wedging surfaces 49 and 4| firmly against their corresponding parts of the protector rod. If it be desired to change the angular position of the dagger relatively to the protector rod the nut 36 can be slackened and after the adjustment is made retightened to clamp the members 40 and ti tightly against the protector rod in the newly adjusted position. 7
The tubular clamping members have a snug fit with the bore 29 and the rod I! will have a similar fit with the bore 28. By tightening the clamping members relatively large areas of the latter and the rod I! will be forced into tight 7 holding relation to adjacent surfaces of the dagger body. Both of the upper.and lower clamping members 30 and 3| are shown herein as e itism given that both clamping members can be forced tightly against the protector rod.
Having thus described the invention it will be seen that changes and modifications of the foregoing specific disclosure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
' vertically therethrough and communicating with V What is claimed as new is:
1. In protector mechanism for a loom, aprotector rod, a protector dagger through which the rod passes, a pair of tubular clamping members slidable in the dagger along an axis extending transversely of the rod, one member having a wedging surface engaging one part of the rod and the other member having another wedging surface engaging another part of the .rod, and
means. passing through said members drawing the latter together by movement along said axis to effect tight engagement of said wedging surfaces against the parts of the protector rod corresponding thereto.
2. In protector mechanism for a loom, a dagger having a bore extending horizontally there-.
through, a protector rod in said bore, said dagger having a second bore extending vertically therethrough and communicating with the first bore and into which part of the protector rod extends, a pair of tubular clamp members in the second bore, one above and the other below the rod, and means passing through said members drawing the latter toward each other in said second bore and into tight holding relation with said rod and a dagger.
ger having a bore extending horizontally there-V through and having a second bore extending the first bore, a protector rod in the first bore extending partly into, the second bore, a pair of tubular clamp members in the'second bore, oneabove the rod and having a wedging surface for engagement with one part of the rod and the other member below the rod and having a wedging surface for engaging another part of the rod, and means drawing said members toward each other in said second bore forcing said wedging surfacesagainst the corresponding parts of the rod to establish firm holding relation between the rod, members and dagger..-
being of the same length so that they are in effect From the foregoing it will be seen that the 4. In protector mechanism for a loom, a dagger having a bore extending horizontally therethrough, a cylindrical protector rod in said bore, said dagger having a second bore extending vertically therethrough, and communicating with the first bore, part of the protector rod extending into the second bore, a pair of tubular clamp members within and closely fitting the. second I bore but movable therein toward each other, one member being above the rod and having a wedging surface engaging one part of that part of the rodextending into the second bore and'the other member being belowthe rod'an'd having a wedg ing surfaceengaging another part of that part of the rod extending into the second bore, and means drawing said members toward each other in said second bore forcing said wedglng surfaces against the corresponding parts of the rod to establish firm holding relation between the rod, members and dagger.
5. A dagger for a 100m protector rod, said dagger having a bore therethrough to receive the protector rod and having another bore. therethrough communicating with the first bore and extending transversely of the latter, a pair of tubular clamping members in the second bore, and a bolt extending through said membersby 10 Number 63 which the latter may be drawn toward each other in said second bore.
