OVERSHOE-RETAINER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. YATES, a citizen of: the United States, residing at Alturas, in the county of Modoc and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Overshoe-Retainers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides means for preventing an overshoe from being withdrawn from the foot by suction, adhesion of slush or mud, or from other cause generally tend-- ing to displace the overshoe when performing service.

The invention contemplates an attachment applied to the inner side of the rear portion of the overshoe at a point to insure its entrance into the crease or space formed between the sole and the upper of the shoe or other foot covering which is required to be protected by means of a rub her, overshce, galosh or like protector slipped over the ordinary shoe or foot covering.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in 1 the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing, forming apart of the specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the rear portion of an overshoe provided with a retainer embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the manner of use of the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the preferred form of retainer.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.

The numeral 1 designates an overshoe, rubber, galosh or like part to be worn over the ordinary shoe or foot covering as a protector therefor in inclement weather.

In accordance with this invention the overshoe has a retainer 2 upon the inner side of its rear portion in position to enter the crease or space 8 generally formed between the heel and the upper of shoes. rectly in the rear of the overshoe so as to enter the rear portion of the crease or space 3 and extend about equally upon opposite sides of the back seam. In the preferred construction the retainer 2 is formed as part of a plate 4, the latter having its lower portion widened and its upper portion contracted, said plate being approximately of concavo-convex form to fit the shape of the rear portion of the shoe opposite the heel of the upper. The lower end of the plate L is bent to provide a flange, which constitutes the retainer 2. The plate 4 may be of metal or other suitable material and may be stamped, molded or otherwise formed and is placed within the rear portion of the over shoe and secured thereto by rivets or fastenings 5. Should it be required to vary the position of the retainer to allow for wear or to insure entrance of the retainer into the crease or space 3 between the heel and the upper of the shoe the plate 4. may be provided with vertically extending slots 6 and the fastenings 5 may be of a nature to admit of vertical adjustment of the plate, said fastenings consisting of short bolts having the nuts upon their outer ends adapted to be turned by means of a key.

When an overshoe or like protecting device is supplied with a retainer in accordance with this invention and is slipped upon the foot over the shoe it is prevented from slipping off from any of the usual causes by reason of the retainer 2 entering the crease or space 3.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
