CANTEE.
I Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 17', 1912.-
@puatron med February 12, 1912. serial 110.1171173.
To all lwlw/om it may concem Be it known that I, ANDREW MCLEN MOFFAT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the city'of Frankfort, in the county of Franklin, in the State of Kentucky, in the United States of America,
have invented a new and useful Improvenovel construction and arrangement of parts whereby adrinking cup is stowed away inside the canteen when not in use.
. The objects of the invention, are to provide a canteen or like vessel with a drinking cup of a large holding capacity, to support the said cup rigidly inside the vessel so that it will not rattle or become detached from the vessel when being`carried about, and
` generallyto provide a light and serviceable canteen in every res'spect with cheapness of cost and simplicity of construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section througha a canteen according to this invention. Fig. g2 is a perspective view showing the drinking cup and cap detached from the canteen with portions of the latter two elements broken away. Fig. 3, is a perspective detail of the drinking cup with a broken away to sclose the interior.
Like numerals of reference indicate cor-I responding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 1s the-vessel or body portion of the canteen of any suit able shape but here shown as the well known drum shape, said vessel having the neck 2 externally threaded at 3.
4 is the drinking cup comprising a tubular body portion open at each end and having the externally threaded base 5. The body portion 4 is preferably cylindrical in shape and of a diameter to nicely fit the'passage 6 through neck 2, said body portion meeting the base 5 in a shoulder 7 which latter is adapted to abut the outer end ofthe neck 2. The threads on the base 5 are of exactly the same pitch as the threads on the neck 2, and
when thecup 4 is in position within the vessel the latter threads are in vertical aline- (portion lof the lower end ment with the threads 3 and form contiriu- 'I ation thereof. v8 is a cap or closure comprising-1a.- simple shell whose side wall is of suic'ient Ien to inclose the base 5 and neck2. The side wall of said cap "is 'provided with the-inten `nal threads 9 adapted to engage the threads on the base 5 and the threads'3 on the neck and when screwed down. into position, its bottom 10 abuts and *forms a closure to the base end of the cup 4- 11 is a'small ton shoulder 7 at a'point in 'its circumference and vada ted to engage a notch 12in 'the outer en of the neck 2. The tongue 11 and corresponding notch 12 may be V- shaped or any other desirable shape and are provided to prevent the cup 4 rotating within the e extending 'Y from the neck 2 while screwing ron the cap 8, but I wish it tobe understood that othermeans if necessary may be provided. for the same purpose.
13 is a cup handle comprisin a springythrown over and sprung inside thecup 4,
but in Fig. 3 the said handle is shown out of the cup into a useful position for drinkin in which position the heel 15 abuts the si e of the cup. v
I do not desire to claim the handle arrangement herein described as the same forms no part of the present invention ex-- cept as a useful 'adjunct to the cup 4.
- In theiuse of this invention assuming the vessel has been filled withliquid and it is\ desired to obtain a drink therefrom it is only necessary to unscrew the cap 8 from the threads 3, and base 5, and the cup can then be withdrawn and 'used to receive liquid from the vessel for drinking purposes in \which case the cap is replaced on the base 5,
braces both the threads 3 and the threads on` the base 5. In this closed position it will `large mouth of the vessel the be seen that the cup is held perfectly rigid so that there will be no rattlingwhile the canteen is being carried about.
In filling the vessel l it is not necessary .to Withdraw the cup as the cap alone may be removed and the liquid inserted into the vessel by way of the cup. V v
An important feature of the present invention is that, the neck of the vessel can be made extremely large this facilitating filling thereof and drinking therefrom. Furthermore the cup is kept free from the contaminating dust and the like by reason of its being inclosed in the vessel. I also Wish it to be noted that with the construction of cup herein described it is possible to use a handle, which as far as I am aware is a novel and useful feature. The device is extremely simple in construction and there are no loose chains, straps or the like necessary to hold the cup in position.
I Wish it to be understood thatthe construct-ion herein described may be varied as may become necessary so long as the essential features are adhered to as claimed in the following claims for novelty.
In canteens at present in use it is impossible to thoroughly clean the interior but with the present invention, owing to the interior may be thoroughly cleaned by the insertion of a brush or other cleaning device.
' What I claim as my invention is.
'-1. In a canteen or the like, the combination With a vessel having a mouth yportion, of a drinking cup having a removable bottom and detacha-bly held to said mouth portion and extending Within-the vessel.
2. In a canteen or the like, a. combination with a vessel having a mouth portion, of a drinking cup detachably held to said mouth portion g and extending' within the vessel, said cup' having a handle housed Within the cup.
3. In a canteen or the like, the combinaan internal thread nemesi tion with a. vessel-having a neck portion, of a drinking cup adapted to be stored inside the 'vessel and engaging said neck portion at one end, said cup having a removable bottom also engaging said neck portion.
4. In a canteen or the like, the combination with a vessel having a neck portion, of a movable bottomed drinking cup extending inverted into said vessel and having a shoulder abutting the outer edge of said neck, and means for detachably securing the outer end of said cup to the neck.
5. In a canteen or the like, the combination with a vessel having a neck portion, of a drinking cup adapted to extend into the vessel, said cup having a removable bottom adapted to engage said neck and form a. closure to the vessel.
6. In a .canteen or the like, a vessel having an externally threaded neck, a tubular drinking cu-p extending inverted into the vessel through said neck and having a shoulder abutting the outer end of said neck, and a cap forming aremovable botl tom to said cup and threaded thereonto and havling a thread engaginglsaid thread 'on the nec 7. In a canteenor the like, a vessel having an externally threaded base neck, a tubular drinking cup extending into the vessel and having an externally threaded end of corresponding diameter and pitch to the threads on said neck, said end joining the body part` in a shoulder abutting the outer end of said neck, means for preventing rotation of thc cup within the neck and a cap forming a removable bottom to said cup and having threads and neck threads.
