To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, lVILLiAM G. lt'iorrn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Vending-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, to machines for vending newspapers; and
my object is to provide a simple construction of vending machine for the purpose stated,

The easingof the machine, which may be constructed of any suitable material, as for example, sheet-iron, is represented at 8 and contains a false-bottom 9 and partitions 10 reaching shortot said false-bottom and forming therewith and with the front and rear sides of the casing, compartment 11 serving as a magazine for the newspapers to be delivered by the machine. In machines of this general character provision is made for the operation of the machine only upon the introduction therein of a coin, or other token. Any suitable means for coiiperation with the drive-shaft 24 for the above stated purpose may be provided, a description of those-illustrated being as follows: Journaled on an end of the shaft 25 is she ts 31 equipped at its outer end- 'withan' operating crank-handle 32 and in-- termedi'ate its ends with an upwardly-exv tending arm 33 fixed thereto. The parts'just described are so proportioned and arranged that the distance between the lugs 37, 40 and 41, when the parts are in normal position, is slightly greater than he diameter of the coin 39. The coins 39 are adapted to be fed to the operating mechanism described through a chute. 42, which opens at its upper end, through the front side of the casing 8 as represented at 43,-and terminates'at its lower end in a discharge-opening 44 so disposed that a coin deposited into the chute will drop into the space between the lugs 37, 40 and 41', and rest against the spring arm 45, secured to the casing (Fig. 1) whereby upon rotating the shaft 25 to the left in Fig. 1, the coin 39, by reason of its interpos tion between the lugs 37, 40 and 41, will cause the arms 26 to be swung to the lttjin said last-named figure and operate the papendischarging 129 plates 18 and 19 as hereinbefore described, the coin 39, upon the act of rotating the shaft 25 in the opposite direction to return the parts to normal position, after the paper-delivering operation, dropping to the 125 bottom of the caslng 8.

it will be noted that. not only is mechanism constructed in accordance with any invention simple and economical of lnanih facture, but it is rendered positive in its operation, and there exists no danger of clogging of the papers therein.
