oa'nooai.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. CROWLEY, a citizen of the: United States, residing at Beacon Falls, in the county OfNGW Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Shoes, of which the following a specification.
My invention relates to rubber shoes, and has for its object to improve the construction of'heels for such shoes.
' In the use of rubber shoes'it is the familiar experience that the said shoes are apt to be destroyed at the heel, particularly at the lower part thereof, before the remainder of the shoe is worn out.
The particular object of my invention therefore to protect and strengthen the shoe atsuch parts as are most subject to Wear. Y i
My invention consists. in the provision of a cushion insitle of the said heel and which overlies the sole thereof, which protects the rubber forming the sole of said heel from the action of the shoes and particularly from the action of projecting nails in said heels, and which as illustrated is made of a plurality of plies of fabric ancl' interposed sheets of rubber. a
The ilrawin g is a longitudinal section of I a, rubber shoe having invention applied thereto.
lily invention is, illustrated as applied to a rubber shoe of ordinary construction V having as usual a fabric lining B which e2;- tends throughout the interior of the shoe on which is secured a rubber bocly C. 1
The bottom or sole of the heel F has in accordance with my invention a cushion formed therein .of protecting and resilient material. This cushion, which aa \rhole lettered ii is formed by preference of a plurality of layers of textile fabric of which three are illustrr tetl and "which are lettered a, 5/, 5 The saiol. layers of fabric preferably have a sheetor layer of rubber into posed between each of the fabric layers and the fabric and rubber are secured together,
as by being vulcanized, the vulcanization being conveniently carried out at the same tune that the other parts of the shoe are Specification of Letters iatent.

subjected to the process of vulcanization. The said cushion. G extends from side to side of the heel, and from front to rear thereof, and overlies the sole of the heel F and may be covered by the inner lining B of the shoe. it frequently happens that the leather shoes which the rubbers protect have projecting nails in their heels which quickly Wear through the rubber. Frequently also these heels are irregular in. shape resulting from being worn down excessively at the rear portion thereof, providing a space into which the rear part of the shoe may pass ancl be coinpresseifl therein. in Walking, Wrinhlin and breaking the same and leatling to early destruction of. the rubber shoe at this point. My improved cushion G strengthensthe heel as to the sole thereof, and therefore enables the same to resist the entrance of the nails in the heel. Wise increases the resistance of the sole of the heel to wrinkling, and increases the wear of the heel at this point.
I claim as my invention z- 1. A heel for rubber F1095; comprising outer sheet of rubber firming the sole of the hee a p urality of layers of fabric of suhstzuitially the area of the inside of the heel overlying saitl sole and forming a cushion. and protection. thcref r, ancl. layers of rubber between said layers of fabric, said layers of fabric and rubber being secured together. i
2. vA heel for rubber shoes outer sheet "of rubber forming the sole of the heel, 'a plurality of layers of fabric of substantially the of the inside of the heel overlying said sole and forming a cushion and protection therefor and layers of rubber between said layers of fabric, said layers of fabric anti rubber bei. lg; secured together, 4
and an inner sole lining lying over said rubber anti fabric eusln "1.
in un ess whe eof l have hereunto signeoi my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
