WATERPROOF BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,881, dated November 27, 1894.

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SHIPPE of Milford, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Waterproof Boots or Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
' This invention has for its object to improve that class of Waterproof boot or' shoe having a leather outer sole.
In the production of this class of boot or shoe great trouble has been experienced in effecting the strong attachment of the leather sole to the india-rubber'boot or shoe, without the water following the fastenings to the interior thereof.
Figure 1 in cross section represents part of an india-rubber shoe, it being molded to leave what is called a scotch edge, and Fig. 2 shows the same with aleather outer sole applied to it in accordance with my invention.
The upper a, and its sole 6 integral therewith, and the lining sole 0, are and may be all as common to india rubber boots and shoes,
I but I have in the molding of the india rubber made a much broader edge b than heretofore common in connection with india rubber boots or shoes. 7
I wish to apply to the india rubber or waterproof shoe, an outer sole 0 of leather, and preparatory to this I choose to strengthen the junction of the upper a with the sole 1),
and to do thisI add to the india rubber shoe at the junction of the edge or flange b'- with the upper, a stay strip 01 composed of cloth coated with india-rubber compound, said stay strip being extended upwardly on the upper and being incorporated with it and the flange by vulcanization.
Stitches or fastenings of any form willnot hold as well in india rubber as in leather, so I apply on the stay piece, and consequently at the upper side of the scotch edge, a welt ,strip '6 preferably of leather and unite the outer sole, scotchedge, and welt by fastenings f, preferably made as stitches, but any other usual sole fastenings may be used instead.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A water-proof boot or shoe composed of an india. rubber upper and integral sole extended laterally beyond the upper to form a flange, anouter sole of leather, and awelt, as
e,laid on the flanged portion of the rubber sole, the outer sole, flange and welt being united by means of fastenings at a point out side and independent of the upper, substantially as described.
2. A waterproof boot or shoe composed of an india-rubber upper and sole having a wide flange, a stay strip vulcanized into the space at the junction of the upper and flange of the sole, an outer sole of leather, and a welt, as e, laid on said flange, the outer sole flange and welt being united by means of fastenings at a point outside the upper, substantially as described.
