Specification of Letters Patent.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that T, NEWTON H. VVILLInM- soN, a citizen o-f the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of VVealdey, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haine-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to haine fasteners.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a hame fastener which may be easily adjusted so as to secure the hame members upon different sizes of collars and which is adapted to automatically lock when the hame has been applied to the collar in the proper manner.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a haine fastener which will be simple in construction, easily operated to secure the hame upon the collar, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively small cost.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding part-s in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a collar and hame with the fastener associated therewith, the collar being shown in dotted lines and the hame and fastener in full lines, the hame section and the fastener sect-ion being in the position they would occupy when the latter have been operated to locking position. Fig. 2, a bottom view of the fastener, Fig. 3, a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the locking pawl of the fastener.
Referring to the drawings A represents generally a horse collar and B the hame inclosing same. This hame comprises a pair of sections 10 and 11 disposed on opposite sides of the collar respectively in the usual grooves and connected together at their upper ends by a hame strap 12, while their lower ends terminate in eyes 13 and 14 respectively and are secured together at the last named point by means of a fastener C which constitutes particularly the subject matter of this invention.
The fastener C is shown as comprising independent sect-ions C and C2 adapted to be detachably interlocked to secure the hame section upon the collar. The section C of the fastener is shown as comprising a body portion 15 having a hook extension 16 at one end. Extending through the body portion 15 in a longitudinal direction is a passage 17 which communicates with an opening 18 formed in the lower side of the body l5, said opening having its end farthest from the hook 16 enlarged as at 19. The upper side of the section 15 at the end thereof farthest from the hook 16 is provided with a cut away portion 2O with which latter the passage 17 and the enlarged portion 19 of the recess 18 communicate.
Intermediately pivoted between the side walls of the recess 18 is a locking pawl 21 one end of which terminates in an enlarged portion 22 disposed in the enlarged portion 19 of the recess 18 and forming a finger bearing while the other end of said pawl is provided with an inwardly directed finger 23 the inner face of which is beveled as at 24. The pawl 21 is normally held in 1ocking position by means of a spring 25 countersunk in the lower face of the section 15 and extending across the recess 18, the lateral head of the spring seating in the transverse groove 21 formed in the outer face of the pawl 21 as is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The hook 16 has its mount normally closed by a keeper spring 25 after the manner of an ordinary snap hook. i
The section C2 of the fastener is shown as comprising` a hook 26 having an elongated stem 27 of a size to snugly slide in the passage 17 of the section C1. This elongated stem 27 is provided with a plurality of openings 28. The ends of the openings 28 nearest the hook 26 are beveled as at 29 for the purpose of cooperating with the beveled face 24 of the finger 23 as the stem 27 is moved into the passage 17. The mouth of the hook 26 is closed by a leaf spring 30 similar to the leaf spring 25, said spring forming a keeper to secure a respective hame section from disengagement from said hook. f
Tn applying the haine sections to the col- ,lar the hooks 16 and 26 are engaged respectively in the eyes 13 and 14: and the stem 27 forced into the passage 17 until the hame sections are properly disposed upon the collar. During the movement of the stem 27 through the passage 17 the finger 23 of the paWl 21 Will automatically engage in successive openings 28 until the desired adjustment of the hame section is had and the disposition of the linger 23 in one of the openings 28 Will lock the sections C and C2 of thefastener against disengagement and thus secure Vthe haine sections in place. In order to release the hame section 1t 1s only necessary to press inwardly upon the enlarged portion 22 of the paWl 2l which Will remove movement across the passage, an enlarged portion on the other end of said paWl disposed in the enlarged portion of said opening, said paWl in locking position normally lying flushed With the adjacent face of the body portion, a leaf spring countersunk in the bottom of the body adjacent tothe paWl and having an angular head extending across the passage and lying in a transverse groove formed in the outer face of the paWl and normally holding the paWl in locking position, a hook at one end of the body portion, the other section of said fastener comprising a hook having an elongated stem provided With a plurality of openings and slidable in the passage of the first named section, rsaid pawl permitting the movement of said stem through the passage in-one direction and normally locking said stem against movement in the passage in the opposite direction by engagement of the inwardly directed finger in one of the openings of the stem.
