To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MELBOURNE E. BLATCHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Finney and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar and Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to cuff and collar buttons, and the object of the same is to provide a button which can be easily passed through the button-holes in a collar or cuff,

and which will be securely held in place after being passed through the button-hole.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the collar button. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation with the head of the button turned at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the button with the head removed. Fig. 4 is a section along the line 4-4 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the head. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the head. Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary View of the shank carried by the head, with the spring and supporting ring of the spring shown in section. Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan view of the supporting ring. Fig. 9 is a bottom plan view showing a modified form of spring.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that this invention comprises the bottom plate 10 which is provided with an opening 11. A cylindrical tube 12 ex tends from the opening 11, and carries an enlarged head 13 which is provided with a small opening 14 and with oppositely disposed notches 15 and 16. A sleeve 17 which is elliptical in cross section as shown in Fig. 3 is secured to the bottom plate 10 and surrounds the tube 12 with its outer end portion secured to the head 13. The sleeve is provided with oppositely disposed notches 18 which are positioned in alinement with the notches 15. A head 19, which is elliptical as shown in Fig. .5, and which has a curved outer face, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, carries the shank 20 which extends from the cross bar 21. The shank passes through the opening 14 into the tube 12 so that the cross bar 21 will be seated in the notches 16 or 15 and 18, according to the position in which the head is turned. A spring 22 is placed upon the shank 20, and

has one end bearing against the head 13 and the other end held upon the shank by means of a split washer 23, the washer fitting upon the reduced end 24 and held inplace by the end of the shank being enlarged as shown by the numeral 25.

When using this button, the head is turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, and the button passed through the button-hole. The tapered and curved head permits the button to be easily passed through the button-hole so that the difliculty usually experienced in inserting the button through the button hole of a stiif cuff is overcome. After the button has been passed through both of the buttonholes the head is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the button will be prevented from slipping out of the button hole. The cross bar 21 fits in the notches 16 or 15 and 18, and thus prevents the head from turning out of the desired position, thus preventing any danger of the button slipping from the cuff or collar.

It should also be noted that the head 13 is provided with inwardly extending flanges 26 which form bearings upon which the head 19 rests thus assisting in supporting the head. If the spring becomes weakened or broken the split washer 23 can be removed from the reduced end 24 by spreading the washer and sliding it over the head 25 thus permitting the spring to be removed. The new spring can be easily applied and the washer then replaced by slipping it over the head 25 upon the seat 24.

If desired the spring 22 and washer 23 may be done away with and a spring strip 27 mounted in the seat 24 with its ends bearing upon the base 10.

What is claimed is 1. A button of the character described comprising a base plate provided with a central opening, a tube extending from said base plate and inclosing said opening, a head carried by said tube and provided with an opening communicating with said tube and having-its outer edges provided with oppositely disposed notches, inwardly extending flanges formed at the outer edge of said head between said notches, an elliptical sleeve surrounding said tube and secured to said head and base plate and provided with notches formed in alinement with one set of the oppositely disposed notches formed in said head, an elliptical head provided with a tapered outer face, a cross bar formed upon the inner face of said last mentioned head, a shank extending from said cross bar through the opening in said firstmentioned head and through said tube, said cross bar being seated in one of said seats of oppositely disposed notches, the end of said shank being reduced to form a seat, a spring surrounding said shank and having one end bearing against said first-mentioned head, and a split Washer resting in said seat and forming a bearing for the opposite end of said spring.

A button comprising a base plate provided With a central opening, a tube ex tending from said base plate and surrounding saidopening, a head carried by the end of said tube and provided With an opening 7 communicating With said tube and With oppositely disposed notches in its'outer edge, a sleeve surrounding said tube and secured to said head and base plate and provided with notches registering with one set of the oppositely disposed notches formed in said head, a shank passing through said head and tube, a spring surrounding said shank and bearing against said head, a Washer mounted upon the end of said shank and forming a bearing for said spring, an elliptical head carried by the outer end of said shank, and a cross bar formed upon the inner face of said elliptical head and adapted to fit -into said notches to hold said elliptical head in a desired position.
