To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMI HURD KEnNEnY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at 840 Broadway, Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements inv Combination Beds and Settees, of whlch the following is a specification.

My invention consists in the combinationf of parts and details of construction as will more fully be set forth by reference to the.

accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front or face View of combination bed and settee and Fig. 2 shows a side or end view of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of bed, showing the head or pillow rest also foot rest and operating mechanism, whereby bed is locked and unlocked from its horizontal and semi-vertical positions. Fig. 4 is an elevation of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 shows details of unlocking mechanism, and Fig. 6, being the reverse view of Fig. 5, shows in detail the combination of same with fractional part of bed and supporting frame of bed.

It is the object of my invention to produce a bed adapted to be used in a library or ofiice, in a hall or parlor, in a kitchen or dining room, on a sleeping porch or in temporary camps, on railway cars or on board ships; briefly, it is particularly adapted in a number of places, where it is specially desired to have a bed, that will take up a minimum of space and render itself possible of easy dismemberment for transportation; at the same time it may remain a stationary unit having all the good points contained in an ordinary bed and also be a very useful and ornamental piece of furniture otherwise.

Referring to drawings Fig. 1, it is seen that the combination bed and settee consists of a frame portion 1, surmounted by a cabinet portion 2; attached to the frame portion 1 is a seat 3 adapted to be swung on its pivot 4L and forming a receptacle 5 underneath the same, in which may be stored bedding or otherwise. The frame portion 1 is further resting on ordinary casters 6, no legs or other indications of a double use being in evidence; it is further seen that said frame portion 1 has a vertical or semi-vertical groove 7, closed by filling pieces and adapti ed to be easily removed if dismemberment My invention relates to combination bed and settee adapted to be converted into a is wanted, and in said grooves 7 the bed proper is inserted and lowered in place and the pivots 8 of bed frame 9 are so disposed that a minimum of effort is needed to swing the same; it is further seen how it reclines slightly backward and finds its natural rest It further combines usefulness and neatness of design, so as to render it a most atv tractive piece of furniture in combination against the frame connection 10 running from side to side of frame portion 1. The bed frame 9 is further partly upholstered or finished on its underside in harmony with top part of seat 3. The cabinet ,portion 2 may be constructed so as to contain lockers 11 for any desirable purpose, and it is also arranged to contain a mirror 12 in the middle between lockers, pivoted in or near its center and adapted to be swung in any needed. position; the lockers 11 are preferably hinged at their lower extremity and adapted to automatically close as released from their open position by means of spring hinges, an elastic band 13 as shown, or otherwise. If the cabinet portion 2 is removed it is seen, that a combination of bed and settee is left independently adapted for the purpose intended.

Referring to Fig. 3 and Fig. 4;, it is seen that the bed generally appears as is common, but it has these following novel features-:-A head or pillow rest 14 adapted to be lowered and raised by means of hand power in combination with lever 15, this lever may be attached to bed frame 9 and has a slotted portion fitting around a pin 16 attached to cross-piece 17, the elastic bands 18 will stretch as crosspiece 1.7 is moved around high points of teeth in side pieces 19, and the elastic bands 18 are other wise attached to bed frame 9, thus may an adjustment of said head or pillow rest 14 be effected and the same arrangement and manipulation applies directly to foot rest- 20. The bed frame 9 is provided with pivots 8 and the locking mechanism 21 is so arranged that it will positively prevent the tipping of bed when occupied and readily release it when it is to be folded up, which may consist in a spring support 22 fastened in a receiving groove 23 on the inside and rear of frame portion 1; thus it is seen that when the bed is swung downward and ready for occupancy, it will rest on the support pieces, 24, 24, Fig. 1, at ends of seat 3 and also on said spring support 22, it is thus llIlPO-SSlblG to tip the bed; if the bed, however, is to be folded up, then the lever 25 is manipulated as indicated. Said lever 25 has a pivot 26 and is attachedto a sliding; bar 27 by means of a'pivot 28 attached to said sliding bar 27 it will thus press against said sprlng support 22 forcing the same into groove 23 and releasing the bed, leaving it port 22 will spring out in place underneath bed frame 9, thus preventing any further movement as the bed frame 9 simultane ously will find lodgment against support pieces 24, 24 at the end of seat 3.

The mechanism for locking and unlocking the bed, also the adjustment of head or pillow rest and foot rest may be arranged in a number of ways, and I do not wish to be understood as claiming the particular means described, but any practical and simple means adapted to effect the desired results. c Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a folding bed, the combination of a supporting frame, a bed frame mounted therein, toothed side pieces carried by the bed frame near one end thereof, a pivoted rest supported at the end of the bed and having a cross bar adapted to engage with the said toothed side pieces and by such engagement hold the rest at the desired position of adjustment, and elastic bands arranged to hold the cross piece in engagement with the said toothed side pieces, substantially as set forth.
