To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. FARNHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lincoln, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to sash fasteners, and is more particularly applicable to the character of sashes which are temporarily installed, such as storm windows, or window screens, or framed screens for porches or structures of a similar character.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of thisspecification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a cross section on a horizontal plane, taken on the line 1-1 in Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
As seen in the accompanying drawings, the invention isapplied to the mounting of sashes of storm windows. As seen best in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the storm sash 8 is provided with eyelets 9. These eyelets are preferably disposed on opposite sides of the sash 8, and under usual conditions, it is found that but one eyelet on each side is necessary. It will be understood, however, in this connection, that any number of eye lets may be employed without passing from the scope of the present invention.
To engage the eyelets 9, each sliding plate 10 is provided with a hook 11, the inner surface of said hook being gradually inclined to the upper or inner end of a recess 12. When, in the operation of the invention, the plate 10 is disposed with reference to the eyelet 9 so that the entrance of the recess 12 is disposed opposite said eyelet, the body of the eyelet passes within the recess. Vhen thereafter the plate 10 is depressed, the hook 11, entering the eyelet 9, operates to draw said eyelet and the sash 8 toward the center of the plate 10.
The plate 10 is provided with a centrallydisposed slot 13, through which are extended the shanks of screws 14'. The shanks of the screws 14 form guides for the plate 10, and hold in position washers 15, which washers form sliding rests for said plate. The plate is moved up and down by means of a lever 16. The lever 16 is pivotally mounted at 17 between hinge tabs 18. The tabs 18 are united to a washer-like body 19, through a perforation in which extends one of the screws 14, which, holding relatively stationary the pivot 17 for the lever 15, forms a base for moving the plate 10. The plate 10 is connected with the lever 16 by means of a connecting rod 20. To receive the rod 20, the plate 10 is provided on both sides thereof with perforated lugs 21. The duplication of the lugs 21 in the manner shown best in Fig. 2 of drawings provides for the reverse use of the plate; that is to say, for the use of the plate on opposite sides of any sash.
The fastener is usually mounted on the outside framing bead A of the standing structure. The width of the bead A is usually so slight that any other form of lever than that operating parallel with the extension of the sash frames could not be worked within the limited space between said sash frames. In the present invent-ion the lever 16 is lifted outward, having for this purpose a handle 22. The body 19 and pivot 17 being relatively stationary and the plate 10 free to move, the plate is lifted by said movement of the lever 16, until the hook 11 clears the eyelet 9. In this position, the storm sash or frame 8 may be moved outward from the head A or the inner window sash B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sash fastener, comprising an elongated plate having'one straight edge and a slot parallel thereto, said plate being shaped to form a hook, the side whereof is parallel with said straight edge; supporting guide members for said plate, adapted to be stationarily mounted on the window frame between a permanent and a storm sash; pivot tabs formed on one of said guide members; pivot tabs formed adjacent one end of said guide plate, opposite that having the hook; a lever pivotally mounted on said pivot tabs on said guide member; a link pivotally connecting said lever and the tabs at the end of said plate, said lever and said link being arranged to move in a plane between and parallel with the adjacent window sashes; and a fastening device mounted on one of said sashes to engage said hook.
2. A sash fastener, comprising an elon- 7 said slot and permanently secured to the standing structure of a window frame, said guide member embodying a washer interposed between said plate and said standing structure, the thickness of said washer being equal to, or greater than, the projection of said tabs; a lever pivotally connected with said guide member; and a link pivotally connecting said lever and the pivot tabs extending from one side of said plate, said lever and said link being arranged to move in a plane between and parallel with the window sashes.
3. In a sash fastener such as described, an elongated plate having a straight edge; an
elongated slot parallel with said edge; a recess opening through said edge, said recess being shaped to form a wedge-shaped hook adjacent said edge, and pivot tabs extended from both sides and adjacent the end of said plate; means for guiding said plate extending through said slot and permanently mounted in a standing structure, embodying members interposed between said standing structure and said plate, to separate the plate and the standing structure; and means operatively connecting said guide members and said pivot tabs, for reciprocating said plate, said means operating in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said plate.
