To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. EAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bung-Borers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bung borers, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which will bore out or ream the opening in a barrel or other similar device, and hold the shavings or cuttings within itself, not allowing them to fall into the barrel when out.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be readily opened by giving the same a sharp blow to allow the cuttings and shavings to fall out.
A further object is to provide a device of this character with improved knife and mounting therefor, which enables the knife to be readily removed and replaced and also adjusted when worn.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple, inexpensive in construction, strong and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view showing the device open in position to discharge the shavings and cuttings. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the knife. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the block 16 which holds the knife in operative position. Fig. 5 is a view in longitudinal section. My improved device comprises a hollow body of general truncated conical form. The body comprises two sections 1 and 2, the latter relatively small, and this section 2 of this body constitutes a hinged section which is recessed at its smaller end to receive a perforated ear 3 on the fixed portion of the body, and a pivot pin 4 is projected through this perforated ear and through the smaller end of the hinge section to allow the latter to be moved to open position and discharge the shavings which may be in the body.
The sections 1 and 2, throughout their longitudinal edges, are grooved forming a rabbeted joint 21 to render the body tight when closed and prevent the shavings and cuttings from escaping through the meeting edges of said fixed and hinged sections.
The larger end of the body is made integral with a screw-threaded head 5, and this screw-threaded head 5 has a recess 6 in its inner face in which a spring tongue 7 is located. This spring tongue 7 normally bears against an enlargement 8 on the larger end of hinge section 2 to frictionally hold the hinge section in its closed position.
The fixed section of the conical body is provided with a longitudinal slot 9 to accommodate a knife 10. This knife 10 is beveled in both ends as shown at 11 and 12, and is preferably wider at one end than the other so as to accommodate itself to the general conical form of the body.
One edge of the knife is dull, while the other edge is sharp, and the smaller beveled end 11 of the blade is positioned in a similarly shaped recess 13 in the smaller end of the body portion, while the other beveled end'12 is positioned in a recess 14: in head 5.
The head 5, as before stated, is screwthreaded and an internally screw-threaded ring 15 is screwed onto this head. Block 16 is provided to fit against the beveled end 12 of the blade 10, and is externally screwthreaded in conformity with the screwthreads on the head 5, so that when the rlng 15 is screwed into place, its internal threads engage the threads of head 5 and block 16, thereby securing the blade 10 against movement. As this blade wears, it is of course necessary to sharpen the same and to adjust the angle at which the sharp edge is positioned relative to the surface of the body. Thin sheets 17 may be positioned under the beveled end 12 as seen in Fig. 5. These sheets may be of paper or of other similar material which will raise this end of the blade sufiiciently to give it the desired pitch.
A stem 18 is made integral with head 5, and a suitable handle 19 is secured to this stem to turn the same. WVith my improvements, the smaller end of the truncated conical body is entered in the opening formed in the barrel and as the body is turned, it moves longitudinally, cutting thev bung hole the desired size.
All shavings and cuttings pass under the knife 10 into the body and do not fall into the barrel. When the operation is ended, it is simply necessary to give the device a sharp blow downward, when the section 2 is lowermost, and this blow will impart force to said sections suflicient to overcome the friction of spring 7 ,and allow the section to fall to the position shown in Fig. 2, when the shavings and cuttings will fall out of the body. The hinge section 2 may then be closed and will be frictionally held in closed position by the spring 7.
The ring 15 may be turned to release block 16 and the blade 10, or may be screwed in the opposite direction to secure these parts to the body, said ring being provided with a spannerwrench receiving opening 20 to facilitate its operation.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing fro-1n my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bung borer comprising a truncated conical hollow body, a screw-threaded head on the larger end of the body, said body having a longitudinal slot therein, and said head having a recess therein, a knife positioned over said slot with one end in the recess in the head, an externally screw-threaded block positioned on the blade in the recess and having its threads registering with the threads of the head, and an internally screwthreaded ring screwed onto said head and block, substantially as described.
2. A bung borer comprising a truncated conical body, having a longitudinal slot therein, and a recess in the smaller endof the body in line with the slot, a screwthreaded head integral with the body at its larger end having a recess therein in line with the slot in the body, a blade beveled at both ends, one beveled end positioned in the first-mentioned recess and the other beveled end in the last-mentioned recess, an eXter-,'
hinged section of the body normally in engagement with said spring and frictionally held thereby in closed position, substantially as described.
4. A bung borer comprising a truncated conical hollow body, a screw-threaded head on the larger end of the body, saidbody having a longitudinal slot therein, and said head having a recess therein, a knife positioned over said slot with one end in the recess in the head, an externally screwthreaded block positioned on the blade in the recess and having its threads registering with the threads of the head, an internally screw-threaded ring screwed onto said head and block, a hinged section on said body pivotally connected to the body at the smaller end thereof, and friction means on the head engaging the other end of said hinged section normally holding the same in closed position, substantially as described.
5. A bung borer comprisinga truncated conical body having a longitudinal slot therein, and a recess in the smaller end of the body in line with the slot, a screwthreaded head integral with the body at its larger end having a recess therein in line with the slot in the body, a blade beveled at both ends, one beveled end positioned in the first-mentioned recess and the otherbeveled end in the last-mentioned recess, an externally screw-threaded block fitting said recess on top of the beveled end of the blade in the head recess, an internally screw-threaded ring screwed onto said head and block, a hinged section on said body pivotally connected to the body at the smaller end thereof, and friction means on the head engaging the other end of said hinged section normally holding the same in closed position, substantially as described.
6. A bung borer comprising a truncated conical body having both ends closed, one
portion of said body constituting a longitudinal section hinged at its smaller end to the other portion of the body, the larger end of said body externally screw-threaded and having a recess therein, said body having a slot therein in line with the recess, a removable blade located in the slot, a removable block located in the recess and having 'a screwscrew-threads on the larger end of the body, name to this specification in the presence of and a ring internally screw-threaded and two subscribing witnesses.
