M 5 J www@ JAMES H. BOYE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BOYE NEEDLE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FASTENER.
Application filed May 9, 1912.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. Born, a citizen of th-e United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices especially adapted for use in conjunction with curtain supports and has for its object a device of this character which may be readily secured in position, and will not readily disengage.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a view showing the. fastening device in position just after engagement of the parts; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the device shown in operative position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a socketl member employed in the device.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing comprises a hollow substantially hemispherical socket member l which is in the form of a dome and is provided with a securing flange 2 by means of which said socket member may be secured in operative position to a flat support. Socket member l is provided with an opening 8 and a slot 4 leading inwardly from the top of said opening. The slot 4 depends from the top of the socket member downwardly and opening 4 constitutes an enlargement of said slot and is formed by removing or omitting the corresponding side portion of socket member l on a plane substantially perpendicular to slot 4 and parallel to the axis of socket member l, as shown. An attaching member 5 is provided at one end with a neck 6 adapted to pass through slot 4 and a head 7 on the end of neck 6 and adapted to pass through opening 3. The head 7 is made substantially hemispherical in form on its inner side so as to facilitate rotation of said head in Socke-t member l and said head is also made of a conformation so that it may enter opening 3 sidewise, or when attaching member 6 is held in a position substan- Specification of Letters Patent.

tially parallel with the axis of socket member l, but cannot pass outwardly through said opening 8 when attaching member 5 is swung to a position substantially perpendicular to the axis of socket member l, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The device is especially adapted for securing the ends of spring curtain supports 8 which are suitably anchored in attaching members 5, one of said att-aching members being secured to each end of the spring, as will be readily understood. When it is desired to secure an end of spring 8 in position, attaching member 5 is turned to a position parallel with the position shown in Fig. l, and head 7 and neck 6 inserted through openings 3 and 4 respectively. Then member 5 and spring' 8 are turned to the position indicated in Fig. 2 when the fastening is completed, the flexibility in spring 8 permitting of such movements in case the other end of said spring has been previously secured. The fastening thus established is very effective and can only be disengaged by turning member 5 to substantially the position indicated in Fig. 1, a movement which is practically impossible to occur accidentally.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fastening device comprising a hollow socket member having an opening at one side and a slot leading from said opening inwardly; and an attaching member having a head adapted to pass through said opening sidewise, and a neck adapted to pass through said slot, said head being of a conformation which canno-t pass through said opening when said member is swung to a different position, substantially as described.
2. A fastening device comprising a hollow socket member having an opening at one side and a slot leading from said opening inwardly; an attaching member having a head adapted to pass through said opening sidewise, and a neck adapted to pass through said slot, said head being of a conformation which cannot pass through said opening when said member is swung to a different posit-ion; and a yieldable element secured to said attaching member, substantially as described.
3. A fastening device comprising a hollow substantially hemispherical socket meinber having an opening at one side and a slot leading from the top of said opening inwardly; and an attaching member having a head adapted to pass throughcsaid opening sidewise, the inner side of said head being substantially hemispherical in form, and a neck adapted topass through said slot, said head being of a form which cannot pass through said opening when said member is swung to a different position, substantially as described.
4. A fastening device comprising a hollow substantially hemispherical socket member having an opening at one side and a slot leading from the top of said opening inwardly; an attaching member having a head adapted to pass through said opening sidewise, the inner side of said head being substantially hemispherical in form, and a neck adapted to pass through said slot, said head being yof a conformation which cannot pass through said opening when said member is swung to a different position; and a yieldable element secured to said attaching member, substantially as described.
5. In a fastening device, the combination of a substantially hemispherical socket member having a key-hole slot therein, said slot extending from the top thereof to one edge and being enlarged at the edge by removing a portion of said socket member on a plane substantially perpendicular to said slot and parallel to the axis of said socket member; and an engaging member having a headed projection engaging said socket member, substantially as described.
6. ln a fastening device, the combination of a substantially hemispherical socket meinber having a key-hole slot therein, said slot extending from the top thereof to one edge and being enlarged at the edge by removing a portion of said socket member on a plane substantialli7 perpendicular to said slot ard parallel to the axis of said socket membei; and an engaging member' having a neck and a substantially hemispherical headed projection engaging said socket member, the curved portion of said head lying adjacent said neck, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence cf two subscribing witnesses.
