State ofKansas, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts;
I and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptibn of the inwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence posts and particularly to those constructed of metal.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a metal fence post which may be easily driven into the ground and which includes improved means for. securing the fence wires thereto in such manner that the wires will be uninjured atthe point of their attachment to the post.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a metal fence post which will be simple in construction, durable and Wh-ich'may be manufactured ata comparativ ely small cost.
.W1th the above'and'other objects in view the invention consists in the details of constructionand in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in. detail reference will be had to the accompanyingdrawingsgvherein like characters of reference denote corresponding. parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure'l 1s a front elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with the in vention and showing a plurality of fence longitudinal section of what is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a section on thelme 3-3 of wires secured thereto. Fig. 2 1s a vertical Fig. 1, and-Fig. i a detail perspective view of the wire locking key.
Referring to the drawings the, post is shown as comprising pivotally connected sections 10 and 11, the section 10 constituting the upper or body portion of the post while the section 11 constitutes the bottom or ground "engaging portion.

section 10 is swung to a position atsubstantially right angles to the section 11 and the driving blows are applied" directly to the section 11. When the latterhas been driven the desired distance into the ground the" section 10 is'moved to a position in longitudinal alinementwith the section 11 and a locking bolt 12 passed through registering openings in said sections whereby same are secured in longitudinal alinement. The section 10 of the post is angular in cross sec- -tion and includes arms 13 and 14. The section 10 is provided with a plurality of spaced recesses 15 disposed respectively at the junction of the arms.13 and 1d of said 4 sections.
The fence wires are indicated respectively at 16 and are disposed in respective recesses In order to secure the fence wires 16 against disengagement from the recesses 15 there is provided a locking .key A. This key compr'xsesa single length of spring wire one end of which constitutes a stem 17 while the other end thereof is bent at an angle as at 18 and the free end of this angnlarly bent portion is again bent across the stem 17 at right angles to the latter. In applying the locking key A same is disposed between the arms 13 and 1d and the stem 17 forced across the front of a given. wire 16 disposed in the recess 15. During this movement of the stem 17 the free end of the angularly bent ortion will engage the post and be forced inwardly of the latter until same moves into registration with a given recess 15 when said angularly bent portion will spring forwardly of the post into the recess 15 and lock the key A against upward movement, the stem 17 of the key serving to secure the fence wire '16 against disengagement from the recess 15 as will be obvious. What I claim is i, 1. A metallic fence post comprising a body portion having an angular cross section forming independent arms and provided with a plurality of recesses at the junction of said arms, fence wires disposed in said recesses respectively, and a locking 'key. securing eac fence wire against disendisposed against the inner side of the hodj and across the front of a wire and an anguslarly bentportion 'having its free and posed across the stem at right angles to the latter and projecting through the recess.
2. A'lockingkey for fence wires formed of a single. piece of springwire comprising a stem and an angularly bent portion the free end of which latter is disposed across the stem .at substantially rightangles 10 thereto.
