To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM Sawrcm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail Holding and Delivering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nail holding and delivering apparatus, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which is especially adapted for holding nails of different sizes' for use in hard woodwork, and which is adapted to deliver a single nail at a time and hold the nail in position allowing it to be driven straight into the wood.
A further object is to provide an apparatus of this character which is adapted to be grasped by one hand and operated to move a nail into position below a plunger or driver, and hold the nail in such position while the plunger is given a blow to drive the nail into the wood.
Wit-h these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will' be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. l

1, represents a rectangular block having a plurality of nail compartments 2 therein. These nail compartments are preferably cylindrical and have outlets 3 which are in the form of slots extending through one face of the block. Against this face of the block, my improved sliding plate 10 is located, and is held in position by a covering plate 4. Guide blocks 5 are fixed to block 1, and project through slots 6 in the sliding plate 10 to guide the movement of the latter, and screws 7 are forced through the covering plate 4, and screwed into threaded opening in the guide blocks 5 securely' clamping the covering plate in position and holding the sliding plate in its proper relation to both the block 1 and the covering plate 4.
A handle 8 is secured to the covering plate by means of screws 9, and is adapted to be grasped by the operator to position the device for the driving of a nail. The sliding plate 10 is provided with a push bar 11, which is adapted to be engaged by the thumb of the operator to force the sliding plate inwardly against the action of a coiled spring 12 which bears at one end against the sliding plate 10, and at its other end against the outer end of a yoke 13 secured to block 1 and covering plate 4. This sliding plate 10 is provided with three nail receiving slots 14, which are of different widths and lengths according to the sizes of the nails in the several compartments 2.
Opposite the outlets 3 of the compartments 2, the covering plate 4 is provided on its inner face with nail receiving grooves 15 which constitute more than half of a cylinder in shape, and when the slide is in its outer or normal position, grooves 16 in the face thereof register with the grooves 15, so that complete cylindrical openings are provided through which a nail may be driven. The sliding plate 10, however, is normally positioned as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so that it cuts off any communication between the outlets 2 and the grooves 15. When, however, said sliding plate is forced inwardly, the openings 14 register with the outlets 3, and the grooves 15, so that a nail may pass through into the groove 15. In fact, during continued operations of the sliding plate there will always be one nail in the slot 14 which is forced out of the slot into the groove 15 by t-he other nails in the compartment when the sliding plate is forced to its inward position. The nails are moved in the direction of the outlet 3 by reason of inclined bottoms 17 in the compartments 2, and by any other suitable means desired, so that they will be fed continuously to the outlets.
In the co-vering plate 4, two openings 18 are provided and extend longitudinally through the plate, and' are adapted to receive a guide post 19 in either of them. This guide post 19 is provided with longitudinal grooves 20 toreceive inwardly proj ecting springs 21 in the slotted portions 22 of tubular extensions 23 o-n the covering plate which constitute continuations of the guide openings 18, and these springs 21 prevent any turning movement of the post 19.
A hammer block 24 is secured to the upper end of the guide p'ost 19, and a plunger 25 is secured to this block and is adapted to move through a groove 15 so as to drive a nail which may lie therein. This block 24, post 19, and plunger 25 may be coupled in various ways. construction in which the post and plunger are made with enlarged heads 26 which are positioned in recesses 27 in the block, and are confined by screws 28.
As the grooves 15 are of different sizes in accordance with the nails to be driven, it will be necessary of course, to provide plungers 29 and 30 for the smaller sizes of said openings, and these plungers are interchangeable with the plunger 25 in accordance with the size of the nail being driven.
A sliding cover 31 normally closes the upper end of the nail compartments 2 and this cover is held in closed position by means of an eccentric lock 32 as shown.
In operation, block 24 is elevated until the plunger 25 is out of the groove 15. Sliding plate 10 is then forced inwardly, and a nail will move from the slot 14 into the groove 15. Plate 10 is then released so that the spring 12 will force it back to normal position. The device is then manipulated to position the nail wherever desired, and then a blow is imparted to the block 24 by a hammer or other suitable tool so that the plunger will be forced through the groove 15 and drive the nail into the wood.
It is, of course, to be noted that the block 24 is to be elevated after each operation, so that the plate 10 may be moved to position another nail in the groove and to facilitate this movement of the block 24, a finger nail receiving recess 33 is provided in the side of the block, and the block is of the peculiar stepped shape shown.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but considerv myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope ofthe appended claims.
Fig. 13 shows a simple Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a nail receptacle, a covering plate secured against one face of the receptacle and having a nail receiving groove in its inner face, a sliding plate between the nail receptacle and the covering plate, and having a nail passage therethrough adapted to be moved so as to permit va nail to pass from the receptacle into the nail receiving groove, a plunger movable through the groove, a blow receiving block on the upper end of said plunger, a post secured to said block and movable through said covering plate, and means for holding said post against turning movement, substantially as described.
2. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a nail receptacle, a covering plate secured against one face of the receptacle and having a nail receiving groove in its inner face, a sliding plate be- 1 tween the nail receptacle and the covering plate, and having a nail passage therethrough adapted to be moved so as to permit a nail to pass from the receptacle into the nail receiving groove, a plunger movable through the groove, a blow receiving block on the upper end of said plunger, a post secured to said bloclr and movable thro-ugh said covering plate, a longitudinal groove in said post, and a spring projecting into said groove holding the post against turning movement, substantially as described.
3. In a hand held apparatus of the character described, comprising a casing having a plurality of compartments in which nails are held in a vertical position, a covering plate detachably secured against one facel of the casing and having grooves in its inner face opposite the outlets in the compartments, a sliding plate having openings therethrough, and adapted to be moved by the thumb of the operator to register with the outlets of the grooves, whereby nails may pass into the grooves, a spring normally holding said sliding plate with its openings out of register with the grooves, and means for driving the nails through the grooves.
4.
