ROBERT J'. MORRISON, 0F WAYNE, PENNSYLVANIA..
BRAD FEEDING AND DRIVING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brad Feeding and Driving Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brad feeding and driving apparatus, the object of the invention being to provide a hand operated device which will feed and drive brads at every operation of the device.
W hile the device is especially adapted for use in driving brads into cork tile, it is not limited to this use, but may be adapted for any work where brads or nails of small size are used such as can be driven by the de pression of a hand operated plunger.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and ar rangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my invention with the parts in normal position. Fig. 2, is a view in longitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a view partly in longitudinal section and partly in elevation illus trating the device in its driven position. Fig. 4., is a view in section on the line 4 4: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a view in section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6, is a fragmentary view in side elevation at right angles to'Fig. 3. g
In constructing my improved device, I employ a cylindrical plunger 1 having a central longitudinal passage2 through which brads 3 are downwardly fed. The upper end of this plunger is preferably made integral with a handle 4; into which the conical lower end of a reservoir 5 is secured by means of a screw 6. This reservoir is adapted to contain a quantity of brads, and feed them one at a time down the passage 2.
The upper end of the reservoir is normally closed by a removable plug 7, so that it can be refilled whenever desired. The lower portion of the plunger is of two external diameters, forming an annular shoulder 8, adjacent handle 4, and around the larger Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Ju1y 28, 1911.

Serial No. 641,057.
diameter of this plunger is a cylindrical shell 9, which is secured to the plunger by means of a pin or rivet 10.
Between the shell and the smaller diameter of the plunger, a cylindrical barrel 11 is located, and a coiled spring 12 is positioned around the small diameter of plunger 1, between the upper end of barrel 11 and the shoulder 8, and exerts downward pressure on the barrel to normally hold the same in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The lower end of the barrel 11 is closed by a plate 13 having a central opening through which the brads 2 are discharged. Around this discharge opening, elastic strips are bent forming a spring mouth i l to exert friction against the brads as they are moved through the opening, and a cushion 15 preferably of leather, or other suitable material, is secured to the lower end of the barrel by screws 16, or in any other approved manner, so as. to cushion the blow when a brad is driven.
A clamping collar 17 is secured around the shell 9, near its upper end, by means of bolts 18 and nuts 19, and the outwardly projecting members of said collar constitute parallel bars 20, between which, and on one of said bolts 18, the upper end of a lever 21 is pivoted. The lower end of this lever 21 is bifurcated to straddle a bar 23, and these bifurcated portions are made with longitudinal slots 22 to receive lugs 24: on the bar 23. Bar 23 moves through an opening 25 in shell 9, through a slot 26 in the barrel 11, and into a transverse opening 27 in plunger 1. Opening 27 extends across the passage 2, and the inner end of the bar 23 is beveled as shown at 28, so as to readily force itself between the beveled ends of the adjacent brads.
A wedge block 29 is secured to barrel 11 by means of screws 30, and is grooved at its outer inclined edge to receive and bear against lever 21. This lever 21 is held against the wedge by means of a bow spring 31 secured by screws 32 to the shell 9.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the parts in normal set position. WVhen the handle is forced downwardly, the plunger 1 and shell 9 move downwardly, while the barrel 11 is held against the tile or other article into which the brad is to be driven. As the barrel moves downwardly, lever 21 is carried clownwardly, and as its relation with the wedge 29 changes, spring 31 forces bar 23 inwardly across passage 2. This bar 23 then acts as a fixed head, limiting the upward movement of the lowest brad, so that a continued downward movement of the plunger serves to drive this brad into the tile or other article. hen the pressure on the handle is released, spring 1:2 returns the parts to their normal position, and the device is ready for a sinnlar operation. It will therefore be noted that it is simply necessary to grasp the handle 4t, and force the latter downwardly to drive a brad, and this operation may therefore be rapidly accomplished, and the device result in a great saving of time and labor.
Various sli ht changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
