Be it known that I, PETER E. KROEHLER, a. citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at Naperville, in the county of Dupage and have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa` Beds, Couches, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates. to combination sofas and beds, or combination couches and beds, of the type employing a. forwardly overturnable seat and a folding bed nor mally housed in folded condition beneath the seat, the bed being adapted to be unfolded or spread out in the operation of opening the seat.

The present application constitutes a' division of my applicationl No. 676,217, filedl in the United States Patent-Office February relates to the improved relation and manner of operation of the legs whichv serve to support the forwardly overturnabley seat in the extended position of the structure. 5 The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in 'which- Figure 1 represents an'elevational view of the improved structure inbed form, fone end of the main frame being removed; Fig. 2, a broken fronty elevational view of the structure; and tion'taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1.

The frame mayy be of any suitable cony struction. As shown, it comprises endstandards 1 end-standards; and abox-frame 3 inter posed between' the lower .port-ions of the kendestandards and rigidly secured thereto.

The seat'is equipped with hangers or brackets 9 which carry pivots '10 on which the end-members of the intermediate section are mounted. yThe members 9 are suitably trussed, by braces 11, as shown' in Fig. 3. At the front corners of the box-frame 3 are secured mountings .or brackets 12 equipped with arms 13 which are connected, by links 14, with the seatcarried brackets 9. Links 15.'connect the brackets v12 with the arms 4a of the rear bed section. Links 16 connect the links 15 with the brackets 9. The end-members 6a of the front bed section 6 are connected, by links 17, with clips or brackets 18 with which the end *members of the frame of the seat are equipped.

The longitudinal rail or front member 6b of the bed section 6 projects somewhat in front of the free longitudinal edge of the seat, and is connected, by links 19, with the upper portions of the legs .20 which are adapted to swing in aplane parallel with the free longitudinal rail or edge member 21 of the seat B. The legs 2O are joined, by pivots 22, to brackets or clips 23 which are provided with segmental slots 24 inwhich move guide-studs 25 with which the legs are equipped.- The links 19 are bent, as shown in Fig. 1, to enable them tooperate freely.

It' will be understood that the structure may be converted tos'ofa form by swinging the seat upwardlyfand rearwardly, in which operation the bed section-f1 will be lowered into the box-frame 3, the intermediate section 5 will assume a vertical position*` and the front* section 6 lwill assume a position above and parallel to the section 4, the bedding, ofcourse, being-folded between the bed sect-ions. In the folding operation, the bed-'section 6 will approach the seat, and the links 19 will serve `to automatically swing the legs 20 parallel with the' free lon gitudinaledge of the seat to a foldedposition. In the operation of unfolding the structure, the bed will be automatically spread open and thelegs 20 will be automatically extended to the position shown in Fig. 1.
