To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER BALZANO, a subject of Victor Immanuel III, King of Italy, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cue-Tips, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cue tips, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a tip for a billiard cue that may be readily attached or detached with the minimum inconvenience and expense, and when so attached will be both securely and firmly held.

To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the cue tip, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure l is a view of the end of a cue with my improved tip attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof upon line AB of Fig. 1'; Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the parts before the tip is applied, and a modified means for attaching the base block to the ferrule; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base block with the retaining prongs extended; Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof before the retaining prongs are extended; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the tip upon line A-B of Fig. 1.

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the billiard cue or stock, to the outer end, of which the ferrule 2, having the stud 3 thereon, is applied. Threaded on the stud 3 is the base block 4, having upon one side thereof a plurality of prongs 5, shown herein as being four in number, which are preferably arranged about the center of the opening 6. The tip 7 is of the usual form,'provided with an opening 8 in the fiat face thereof with a metal plate 9 therein.

In assembling the parts, the prongs are inserted within the opening 8 in the tip 7,

with the ends thereof abutting against the plate 9 which serves as an anvil. By a slight tap upon the end of the tip, the prongs 5 are spread outwardly and forced into the body of the tip until the flat face of the tip contacts with the face of the base block 3, at which time the tip and base block are rigidly and permanently secured together. The base block is then threaded onto the ferrule stud.

I prefer to secure the base block to the ferrule by screwing the same thereon, as shown in Fig. 2, but some classes of trade prefer the tip to be secured as shown in Fig. 3, wherein the stud 3 has a smooth exterior and a pin 10 is driven through the block 4 and stud 3.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cue; of a ferrule; a block secured to said ferrule, said block having prongs thereon; a tip; and an anvil plate within said tip for spreading said prongs when the same are brought in contact therewith.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cue; of a ferrule, having a stud thereon; a block, having prongs thereon; means for securing said block to said stud; a tip; and an anvil plate within said tip for spreading said prongs wheiln the same are brought in contact therewit 3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cue; of a ferrule; a block secured to said ferrule, said block having prongs thereon; a tip; having an opening in its bottom face; and a plate within said opening for spreading said prongs when the same are brought into contact therewith.

4. In a device of the character described,

the combination with a cue; of a ferrule affixed thereto; a base block separately connected with said ferrule and removable therefrom without taking the ferrule ofi the cue; a tip; and means for-securing said tip to said base block, said means comprising parts upon said base block that extend 1nt-o the body of said tip at a point between the flat face and the end thereof.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a cue l; of a ferrule 2, having a stud 8 thereon; a base block 4 provided with prongs 5; a tip 7 having an opening 8 in the flat face and an anvil plate 10 9 within said opening.
