To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW Nrsnovrrs, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Globe- Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in globe or shade holders for lighting fiX- tures.
One object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character by means of which a globe or shade may be securely held in position without the use of screws and which will permit the globe to expand when heated, thus obviating the danger of the same being broken.
Another object is to provide a holder of this character having an improved construction of globe gripping members and means whereby the same are simultaneously operated to grip or release the globes.
`With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed. i

Referring more particularly to the drawings l denotes the supporting frame of the holder, said frame comprising a centrally disposed apertured burner engaging plate 2 having formed thereon a series of radially projecting arms 3, the outer ends of which are formed integral with a globe supporting ring 4 having on its outer edge an upwardly projecting globe retaining flange 5. ring 4 and flange 5 form a seat to receive the beaded lower edge of the globe which is engaged therewith in the usual manner. Pivotally connected at equal distances apart and preferably opposite to the outer end of each of the arms 3 are globe gripping members comprising segmental plates 6 pivoted midway between their ends to the lower side of the ring 4 by rivets or similar fastening devices 7 whereby when one end of the plates are fo-rced inwardly the opposite end will be forced outwardly. 0n the outer side of one end of each of the plates 6 is formed. an upwardly projecting right angular globe gripping lug 8 the upper angular or horizontal end of the lug projecting over the upper edge of the flange 5 and above the bead or rib on the lower edge of the globe when the latter is engaged with the supporting frame. rIhe ends of the plates having the lugs 8 are of greater width than the body of the plate and said widened end projects beyond the inner edge of the ring 4 and has formed thereon an upwardly projecting stop linger 9 which is adapted to be engaged with the inner edge of the ring 4 when this end of the plates 6 are swung out, said fingers thus limiting the outward movement of the working ends of the plates. On this end of the plates 6 are also downwardly projecting right angularly formed flanges 10 which are curved transversely to a slight extent and are provided for a purpose hereinafter described.
On the outer or the opposite ends of the segmental plates 6 are formed depending gripping lugs 11 by means of which the plates are actuated in the proper direction for retracting the globe gripping lugs 8 to permit the globes to be engaged with or removed from the supporting frame. On the ends of the plates 6 adjacent to the lugs 11 are also formed bearing lugs 12 which when this end of the plates is forced inwardly, will be brought into engagement with the curved surface of the flanges 10 on the adjacent ends of the adjoining plates. When the lugs 12 are thus brought into engagement with the curved surface of the flanges 10 by the movement of any of the plates, such engagement will cause the simultaneous movement of all of the other plates thus retracting all of the gripping lugs 8 and releasing the globe at all points.
On the inner end of the flange 10 of one of the segmental plates 6 is formed adepending lug 13 to which is connected one end of a coiled plate projecting spring 14 the inner end of which is connected to the plate 2 of the holder. When thus arranged the pressure of thel spring is exerted to draw theends of the plates having the globe gripping lugs inwardly to bring said lugs into engagement withv the beaded end of the globe when the latter' is in position on the holder. The spring 14 will yieldingly hold the gripping lugs in engagement with the edge of the globe without binding the latter thus permitting the globe to expand when heated without danger of being broken, as frequently occurs in the usual form of screw retaining devices which are apt to be screwed into such tight engagement with the globes that the expansion thereof causes the same to break. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
l. A device of the character set forth comprising a supporting frame, a plurality of gripping members pivotally mounted on said frame and arranged end to end, and coacting means on the ends of said members, whereby they are caused to move in unison when one member is actuated.
2. In a globe holder, a supporting frame adapted to be engaged with a lighting ture, a globe receiving ring formed on said frame, a plurality of segmental globe gripping plates pivoted to said ring, globe gripping lugs formed on one end of said plates, operating lugs formed on the opposite ends thereof, a spring adapted to hold said plates in operative position to grip the globe when placed on said ring, and means whereby the ends of said plates are operatively engaged to cause the plates to operate in unison when one of the same is actuated. c
3. In a globe holder, a supporting frame adapted to be engaged with a lighting fixture and comprising a globe supporting ring, a plurality of segmental globe gripping plates pivotally secured to said ring, globe gripping lugs formed on one end of .said plates, curved flanges formed on and projecting downwardly from said ends, stop fingers formed on the inner edges of the ilanged ends of the plates, operating lugs formed on the opposite endsrof the plates whereby said ends are forced inwardly, bearing lugs also formed on said ends adj acent to said lugs and adapted to bear against the curved flanges on the ends of the adjoining plates whereby when one of said plates is actuated the remainder of the plates will work in unison, and a spring connected to the inner end of one of the plates and to a iiXed part of the holder whereby said plate and the remaining plates will be held in position to yieldingly engage the gripping lugs thereon with the globe when placed'in the holder.
4. A device of the character set forth comprising a supporting frame, a series of gripping members arranged around the same and pivotally secured thereto, a curved flange on one end o-f each of said members, a iange engaging lug on the opposite end of each of said members adapted to engage the curved iiange on the adjacent end of the adjoining gripping member, whereby when one of said members is actuated the entire series will be actuated, and a spring` for holding said members in retracted position.
