Description
. H. J. NOYES 8: S. G. TALGOTT. PORTABLE APPARATUS FOR 0111mm MBATSAND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
NO. 104,632. Patented June 21, 1870. ,3
lgz m es a -WMW rm 7 Home J) iii ND SAMUEL to. Timon; or isms-m, this.
Letters Patent No. 104,632, dated J 101021, 18i'0.
IMPROVED.'ronrennnarrnnn'rns ron crmme MEATS, AND roa ornnn rnnrosnsi The Schedule referredto in these LettersEatent and making part of the same Be itknown thatwe, Homr'ro News and SAM- unnQTALoorr, of Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of. Ohio, have invented certain new wherein meat is cured by smoking, and also'in which ashes'may bestored for safe keeping, the same being constructed in sections, so that it can .be easily taken apart audpacked up for transportation.
' Itialso relates to the manner of constructing the door, as hereinafter mo e fully set forth;
lnfigrl f I 2 A B repiese'ntthe upper and lowerscctions of the body of the apparatus, the same beingcons'tructed of iron, and of a circular form, as shown in fig. 2.
The two'sectionsare abntted to each other and secured thus byanoutside band, 0. i A corresponding band, D', fig. 2, isplaced over the joint on the inside,
and" the two,.with the sections between them, are bolted together, as shown-in fig. 1.
The vertical jointsof'the sections are made by an ord nary single lock-j oint, E, fig; 2, and further secured by bolts'in like manner as the joint connecting .the twosections. i
I, the top of the'a pparatus, is secured thereto by ,an inwardly-projecting annular flange, G, fig. 3, secured tothe inside of the rlin of the top. The diameter oi saidannular flange is such that," on placing the top on the edge of the section A, it'will fit on ovcrit, allowing-the rim of the top to, project as eaves over the body of the apparatus,- as shown iu-fig. 1.
Thebottom Hof the apparatus is furnished with an annular flange. projecting upwardlyon the inside thereof, which admits of its being easily removed.
The appaiatusithus constructed and put together,
fie-shown in fig. ].,-and which may be used either for smoking meat or. for the'reception-and preservation of ashes, as an ash-house.
lnfthe event it-is uscdfor smoking'mcat, &c.,
"the cross I, 'fig. 2, is sccuredto. the top of the apparatns,;the ends-thereof hanging upon the edged" the -sectiou A, as shown, the-top being removed in order that it may be placed within or hung upon the edge of the upper section.- i a Toathecentenof the underside of the cross'arc piv: ote'd'the' radial armsJ, on which are hung the articlear for smelting, as hereinafter described.
The practical use of this apparatus is as follows:
When required only for the storage of. ashes, and e not in large quantities, the upper section ,A need not be used, the top being fitted on thclower section,
thereby making a neat and safe ash-house, which may be placed in any convenient place. The ashes'are thrown in through the door K, and removed, when needed, through L.
The capacity of this small house may be increased bythe addition of the upper sect-ionA, which, in this changed condition, is converted into a'smoirc-house.
The revolving radial arms J being introduced as above described, on saidarms the meats are hung,ac cess being bad to them for that purpose by means of the door M, The series of arms are turned, bringing each one in succession withinreach from the door, so that no trouble is experieneedin arranging the meat-s for curing or smoking.
The door .N, fig. 5, referred to, is. constructed of a sheet of metal, forming thepanel O. The margin'of said panel is riveted to a frame, P, the .eorners of which are mit'ered, as shown at (1-. Over said miterjoint is riveted a square piece, 1), thereby makinga strong and durable joint, 7 v
The sheet forming the panel of the door is made somewhat larger than the size of the frame. The pro- ;jecting edges of the panel are then turned oyernpon the edge of the frame, as shown at 0, thereby not only adding to the strength of the" door, but also making it neat in appearance.
For transportation this apparatus istakeu apart thus: The two sections, A B, are detached one 'ti'onr the other, each of which is then rolled up into a small roll, and placed in the top F. The chimneyor veuti later 9 's'also dctachedand placed therein. The bottom H is then fitted to the top, thereby inclosing thev rolled-up sidesand hoops C 1) within the top and bottom of the apparatus. The cross I and radial arms a J are then bound to the outside of the bottom H, In.
this way the whole structure is reduced to a very smal compass, and which can be handled for ship.
ment with but little labor.
It will be obvious that this structure can be 'n n packed and put up with but little labor, and by any one of ordinary mechanical skill, and, furthermore, it being constructed I from taking fire, and, therefore, may be placed n o near the dwelling.
The annular flange G above referred to 15 attached to the top by folding the cd'geof'the top-under and over onto the rim or outer edge of the flange, making a lock or lap joint. The inner edge ofthe ,ilange is turned upwardly for the purpose of ,iucreaslug nts strength. This flange not only serves'to securefjthc of sheet-irouiit is perfectly safe v mmmsframe I, and corner-piece I), substantially in the man- What we claim our 'improvemcnp, and desire" ftp ner, as described anfi for the purpose' set forth. secure by"Let';ers Potent, isf 5 l; v
