o1 HAGERSTOXN, MARYLANID, ASSIGNOR T0 SAMUEL PRIE RICHARD E. JONES,

STEVENSON, OF CI-IESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.

Specification' of Letters Pat1ent.

Ap;ilication filed November 3, 1909. Seri1 N0. 526001.

T0 all whom it mag] conccm:

Be it known that I, RICHARD E. JONES, a

1n(I Stute 0f Maljjland, have invented 0ertain new und useful In1p'rovements 111 Iustexiers 1"01 Dcors, &c., whereof the following a specification, reference bing had t0 the uccompanymg draw1ngs.

In sa1d draw1ngs, F1gure I, pep resents 21 a portion of .the C1001 and ja1nb, the dem being ii1dicaied ns partly, open. Fig; II, issectinnal fiew through a port1on 0f ehe d001' and jamb, s'ho'wing um fastener in tqp m, planview, the Prts being represented 1n the position which they occpj* when the door is c1osed. Fig'. III, is a sectional vieW on the line III, III, 0f Fig. II. Fig. IV, is a view in perspective of a modified f0-rm of t-he device, the position 0f the-parts cor responding t0 that of Fig. I.

. Myinvention is partic ularly intended t0 be employed as a fastenef f0r fr.he doors 0f refrigerating apartment-s, 'ice=boXes, and

other x"efilgera nng devices, but it is 0bvi cusly n0t' hnnfed t0 such use.

Referring to the draWings, 1, represents a portion cf th e d001' jamb of a refrigerating apartment, und 2, a portion 01 the d001 thereof. Mounted upon t he dem: is a plate 3, provided with tw0 out-wardly projecting lugs 4:, in which is journaled a rqck-shaft whose axis substantially parallel-to the general plane of the d001. 'Said rock-shaft is provided with a spring 6, one end 0f which is connected therewith, the o-ther end being attached t0 a convenientfixed momber, such as the lug 4, in such manner that turning 0f the rock-sha-ft in a given dir'ection shall be resisted by the tens'1o n 0f the spring. Said rock-shaft czuries at 0ne end a locking arm 10, provided nea,r it-s extremity with a latera1ly projectingpin 11, upon which is 'mounted a roller 12. 'Ihis 1'01191' is adapted t0 tra'v'el upon th'e upwardl-y in- (r1in@d onter face 0f a keep er 13carpied by a plate 14, which is proV1del wih 21 1ecess 15, the outer inclined face of the keeperter minating at a summit 16, 'near.the openhfg of the recess, and an abrnptly inclined surface 17, being formed in the rear pm-tion of the keepe1=, sons to receive und firmly retain the pin 11, and i1 ss roller 12, when they h2we traveled upward upon th indined unter face 0f thef keeper und passed the summit l 16. This p rojecting pin 11 and rcller 12 therefore, be cone a1atch pin for holding ihe doCr closed.

It will be nticed thzibthe relati0n betWeen the inclina'tion of the outenface ofmc-ve ment of the axis of the rock shaft as the latte1 1hoves t'oward the incline in the act 0f closing. the locking arm 10, moves it in the opposite ditection 110 its movement of translation. 1his organizatien 0-f the parts, the friction =betwen the pin and incline is redued C0 a in,inimum and'there is n 0 tendency of the. p1n t0 ja'n1. In order to manually operate the rock-shaft v5, ag'ainst the tensi0n of the Spring 6, I prpvigle at th e other extrem ity 0f saicl ro'ck-shaft a lever rr'n 7, rigidly at- -tached thereto, and conneCted by n1eans 01 a 1ink 8, t0 a handle .9, which in this instanceis in the 15011n .Of a lever moving in 2 planesubstantially parallel to the fade 01. .the' do0r. As it is desirable to* render the device manually operable from either "side So also,.the rotative movement- 0f The operation of the' device is as follows Assumirig (hat the parts arei in the position show'n in Fig. I, and that the d0or is ndoved in the directio-nof .cl'osing, said movement will ca,use the roller12, 0f the locking arm 10, t0 Iide upward upon the inclined outer face of th keeper, thus turning the rockshaft 5, in a direction adapted to Wind the spring 6. As soon as the roller passes the Sinnmit 16, 0f the1ncline, the tension of the spring 6, at once turns the r0ck-shixft 5, in

-a direction corresponding to a downward inovement cf the locking arm, thus th owing the roller 12, and pin 11, of. the 100 ing arm, downinto the 1ower portion 0f the recess 15, where by reason 0f the abrupt incline 01 the 'surface 17, upon the rear portion of the keeper, said parts will be firmlyheld in a clo-sedposition. The tens-ion of the spring 6, shoulcl be relatively strong, so as to be capable 0f eompressing the gaskets with which doors 01 snch structures are ordinarily provided. WVhen it is desired t0 unfas- 'ten the door, the lever 9, or the lever 19, is

depressed, whereupon the link 8,- Will be thrown downward, thus depressing the lever arm-7, and turning therockshaft 5, so as to raise the locking arm 10, and throw its pin 11, a nd roller 12, clear of the abrupt surface 17, ab the rear portion of the incline. Thereuponthe roller can travel down the face 0f the inclirie 13, in correspondence with the opening 0f the d0or.

Kferring to the modified forn'n shown in Fig. IV, the construction of the locking arm in,order to open it, the handle 27, is thrown outward ancl downward, its plane ofrotation bein'g transverse t0 the general plane of the door, instead of being-parallel thereto, as was the plane-cf rotation of the handle 9. In this-modified form- 0f the device, the parts are shown only capable of manual operation fro m bne side 0f the door.

. H:iving thus described my in'vention, I claim:

l. In a fastener 0f the kincl des cri bed, thecombi1iation 0f a rock shaft adapfed to rotate upon an axis substantially parallel t0 the general plane of the (1001, an arm, a latch pin carried by the arm, a stationary keeper having an inclined frontsurface adapted to engage saicl lateh pin, t'he direc-. tion 0f said inclinecl surface being away froln the plane of movementof the axis of the rock shft as the parts approach one another in the closing vof the C1001, a spring normally tending t0 throw the arm of the rock shaft towarcl said plane of movement,

a seconcl rock shaft carried loy the (1001 an l 4 movable in a plane at right angles t0 the axis of the first-namecl rock shaft, and devices for connecting the second rock shaftj to the first r0ck shaft, whereby an oscillating movetending tothrow the arm 0f the roek shaft.

toward said plane 0f mov-ement, a second r'0ck shaft carr1ecl by the clonr anrl movable 1n aplane at r1ght angles t 0 the ax1s 01 the first-namecl rock shaft, an arm carriecl by the first-named rcck shaft, an arm carrieclby the Second-named rock shalf, a link for piv otally connecting said last namecl arms whereby the oscillations 013 "the second rock shaft will be imparted to the first-named r0ck shaft.

3. In a fastener of the kind described, the combination of a roch shaft adapted t0 rotate upon an axis .subSt-antially parallel t0 the general plane of the door, an arm, a latch pin carried by the arm, a roller mountecl 011 said latcl1 pin, a stationary keeper having an inclined front surface aclaptecl t0 en gage saicl latch pin, the direction 0f sald inclined surface being awa v from the plane of movement of the axis 0f the rock shaft, as the parfs approach one another in the elasing of the door, a spring normally tencling t0 fhrow the crank arm towarcl the plane ef movement, a lever carried by the (leer ancl movable in a plane parallel t0 the axis o1 said first-named rock shaft, an arm carried by the rock shaft, and a link pivored at one end t0 said arm, and ab its other end t0 said lever, a cross shaft extencling through the door to which said lever is attached, ancl a second lever carriecl by the'other end 0f the cross shaft.

In testimony whereof, I hare hereunto eigned my name, at Hagerstown, Stace 0f Maryland this 30th day 0f Qctober 1909.
