"Our invention in the hollow The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To'allivhmn it may concern: i Be it known that we,EDwIN F. LENOX and CHARLES ECKHART, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and yaluable Improvement in Means for Preserving Corpses; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description oft-he construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had y to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of refer- I enee marked thereon.
. Figure 1 of thedrawing represents the perforated cooling-hoard or our device, with the head-rest attached thereto, togethenwith the'cords and pins by which the folding" boards are held in position;
., Figure 2' is an external view of our 'device,'with the :front and foot folding boards turned down; and
Figure 3 is an external view of the head portion of our device, showing the door through which ice is passed into the ice-chest. I y r I relates to means forpreserving' corpses, and consists in a novel arrangement of derices by which access may be had to a corpse, for dressingor otherpurposes, without involving the necessity ofrernoving such corpse, or in any manner interfering therewith. I
The letterA of thedrawing reprcseutsan oblong icechest, of a cofiin shape, in the head endof which we arrange the hinged door B. Through this door .iceisj passed into the chest at will.
At the foot of this ice-chest, and through the bottorn thereof, .we make an opening, and arrange there: tube a,'witha-screw-thread on its outer surface,
The letter 0 represents ascrew-cap, adaptedto the .thread on the tube a, and, my means of which, said tube'may he opened at will, for the purpose of drawing off the water fromthe ice-box.
The letterll) represents the perforated removable cover of the ice-box, which we call the cooling-board.
Erepresents the head-rest, and series of cordsflor chains, each having a pin,g attached to its upper end, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. r
let' shall fit closely to its neighbor .upon the board next adjacent, and a pin, y,'on a chain, maybe passed through both, thereby holding the folding boards box above the ice-chest, in which the corpse may he placed.
The letter P represents aremovable cover,.for the box, formed in the manner last-abovedescribed,
To operate ourdevice, the ice is pla'ced in the icebox, the cooling-board adjusted thereon, and the corpse to be preserved is then placed upon the cooling-board.
After this is accomplished, the folding boards at the sides, head, and foot, may be closed, and, after being securely fastened by means of the pins y and the eyelets a, the cover B may be arranged in place, and the body will be secure from intrusion.
Whenever found desirable, for the purpose of dress ing thebody, or other reason, the cover 1? maybe re-' moved, andthe hinged sides, head-board, or foot-1 board may be turned down'and rearranged at the will of the operator.
We clainias our invention- 1 The hinged boards G, H, and K, when constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, in combination with the ice-chest A, for the purpose specified.
'In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
