l' y' Reerring now more-particularly to theA drawings wherein corresponding. parts are "designated by like numerals throughoutthe "several views, the numeral 1 indicates'the` staff of the umbrella which is. preferably made in three sections, comprisinga central section V2, anupper section 3, and a vlower section t. The lower section 4 has secured' thereto in'any preferredmanner'the usual 4handle f5, whereas its opposite end is reduced and threaded, as vat 6, andiadapted` to ibe-inserted'in the threaded recess 7 formed in one end of the central section 2. l The op- A'reduced'and threaded, as at 8, and adapted' to loe-secured. within a 'threaded recessv formed within' one end of the upper section 3.l This will. obviously. provide estati" whereby the sections of which may be readaway in acoinp'act form, o r may be readily assembled when put to use.
The; usual sleeve 9 is pern'taiiently secured adjacent the upperr extremity of .the staii 1, and has hingedly'connected thereto,as at 10, the ribs of' the umbrella. There .may be as many' of these ribs as are necessary' to the .ilytaken apart when not in useaiidfst-o'red.
size and `general con'iguration of the um- -b-rella top, but each bf. the Vvribs L'a'rej preferably in three sections, having a central section 1 1 and outer sections 1 2 `'and 13,-respectively.. hingedlyvconnectem as at 14., and the said hinged connections are arranged in opposite direction, as' shown,v so' that the. sections may be" foldedonenpon the other, as will be hereinafter described. @ne end of each of the 'sections l1 is L,provided with enlarged flanges l5 .betweenwhich are pivotally connected'one end of the sections 12 of the-ribs,
vand this Vsection 11 is .provided with a cut away yportion 16 in which is adapted to restL tension vtornied on the sections 1?,
of the joints ofthe staff.,-
also provided with a stop similar to the one AThe said sections ofl these ribs are when the-umbrella is being raised and'lowdescribed in the before mentioned hinged sections, for a purpose which is obvious.
Sldably mounted upon the staff 1 are a plurality of ferrules, each being connected to the sections of the ribs, as shown, by means of stays 18. These stays are hingedly connected adjacent the upper end of each of the=ferrules, as at 19, andthe ferrules each having extending therefrom a sleeve 20. Mounted Within the staff 1 are a pair of spring actuated thumb clips of the usual construction` indicated by the numerals 21 and 22, Which..are adapted to hold the sections of the.umbrella in an' open or closed position, as desired, and the lower ferrule, indicated by the numeral 1-23, is provided with the usual eloated slot for the reception of the thumb chp 22 When the umbrellais in a closed position.` The sleeve 2O of the central ferrule 24'is provided with an enlarged entrance 25, which obviously permits this ferrule to slide over the thumb clip 21 ered.
It is apparent from the foregoing descrip-l tion, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, 1 that an umbrella of fthis character may be `readily folded upon itself in a compact form which will take up little space when not in use, 'and it is obvious that the usual covering may be secured to the ribs `slidably mounted upon the staff, the inner lehds of said stay rods being pivotally connected to said ferrules, sleeves -depending from each of .said ferrules, the sleeve of the lowermost ferrule being provided with a slot, spring latches mounted upon the staff,
and adapted to rest Within said recess or retaining the ribs in an open and closedposition, and thesleeves of the ferrules adapted to rest upon the adjacent ferrules :for sup.- porting the sections of the ribs when the same are in open position as herein specified.
