1 y y y CARL KALoK, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA,
f PLetter-s Patent No; 104,597, datediune21,1870.
IMPRovE CLOTHES-LINE HoLD'Bn.
i L i n '.lhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
.Be it known thatI, CARLA; KALCK, ofthe city l and countyof Philadelphia and State of Pennsyl- C Vania, have invented a new `and useful Improvement in Olothesline Holders; and I do `hereby declare the following to vwbeyaifull, clear, and exact description thereof, suiicient to `enable others skilled n theart towhichlmy inventionlappertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing making partici' this specification, in which- Ifi'gure 1 isaperspective view of the device, illus trating my invention."
Figure 2` represents modifications thereof. y
. Figure 3 is a centralvertical section.
Similar letters of `reference indicate corresponding parts infthcfigures. y
My invention relates `toa device for holding clotheslines; and
i yIt consistsot a groovcd ollerinounted upon .a con-` v icalpintlc which is cast witlrthe bach plate having an extended l1ead,'all` of which will hereinafter' be desoribed.-
In l the ,drawing-,i f
representsarpin, which is to be driveninto the In the upper or main portion A' of said` pin there projects, horizontally, a pintle ora'od, B, which forms a pivotifor a roller, 0. i
i This roller is groved circumferentially, so that, in
'transverse section or side view, it forms somewhat of `a double Shook, of fwliich D is the headand E the back. l, The pintle is of` conical forni, and is cast with the pin Ai.
The openingin'the roller() is of similar conical form, sothat the friction of the roller is mainly on the pintl, and, thus the back E of the roller is partlyr relieved from friction with the pin.
Itiwill be seen that the" roller is arranged at or about right angles` to tliexaxis of the pin, and the i head of the pin is free, in Iorder to bestruck fordriv-` ,ing the pin'into position. `The pin may, however, be formed with a series of openings, so as to be'screwed` into place, or its lowerend may be screw-threaded or be bent at right anges to the main portion Af for the same purpose. l ,i y
It is well known that clothes or wash-lines are run lrue this 4th day of April, 1870.
`diagonallyfrom fence to fence, or fence to wall, or elsewhere, and there isnaturally rubbing and oliaiing ofthe rope or line. i
' vertically-arranged rollers have been employed to I Y remedy this defect, but another one is encountered. When the rope is slack or slackens it will invariably' `slip therefrom and foul with the place of connection. All drawing or pulling on the rope only serves to increase the diticnlty, and soon the rope wears ont.
My invention is designed to. overcome these evils.
When theholderis in place, the line is easily thrown on the roller, and then drops into the groove thereof.
j There can be no displacement forward or backward in View of the headA and back of the roller, and, consequently, no fouling of the line between the back E be loosened, audit is appa-rent`that a person need occupy but one stand-point todraw in the whole line.
There will be no change in his position for `throwing 'off the line from each hook or for clearing it, since there exists no obstacle to the freedom-of the line.
1t will be'seen that I avoid cliang -orrubbing of i the line, even in the'operation of tightening, the bend ing down by the weight of the clothes, or the subse-` quent swaying of the wind, and produce a simple and convenient device.
I do not claim, broadly, `a roller fon/thc purposes of a clothes-line holder; but,
Having described my invention,
What -I/ do claimv as new, and desire tcsecnre by Letters Patent,is'`
As a new article of manufacture, the .clothes-line holder, consisting of the conical piutle B and pin A, ywithits extended head B' castI in one piece, and the grooved rollerUD E, combined and operating together as` herein shown and described. l
The above. specification of my invention signed by CARL A. KALCK.
