NOELLA BAUM, DECEASED, DATE OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA, BY CATHERINE JANET BAUM, ADMINISTRATRIX, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
WINDOW-SHADE ADJUSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that NOELLA BAUM, deceased, late a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, did invent new and useful Improvements in Window-Shade Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain novel improvements in window shade hangers.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a window casing with vertically arranged guide members for the reception of curtain brackets and for the two pintles of the curtain, the guides being preferably formed of resilient material and adapted to bear tightly against the brackets, and means being provided whereby the said brackets may be raised or lowered upon the guides to sustain the curtain at any desired position with relation to the window sashes.
I also aim to provide a structure of this class which can be attached to any ordinary window frame or readily removed from the same, and which also possesses the desired features of cheapness, ease of application and cheapness of construction.
With the above recited objects, and others of a similar nature in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame provided with my improvements, the curtain being shown in its raised or uppermost position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same showing the cur tain in its lowered position and looked upon the window sash. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken upon the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken upon the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the curtain brackets.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary window frame which is provided with the usual sliding sashes. The casing as well as the sashes may be of any desired size, and secured upon the vertical stiles or members of the casing 1 are the guide ways 2 and 3. These guide ways are preferably constructed of resilient material, exerting a certain amount of pressure toward each other and said guide ways are also substantially U- shaped in cross section. The guide ways, in order to accommodate the curtain, must be spaced a suitable distance away from the frame, and in order to accomplish this I provide suitable studs 1 which are arranged adjacent the top and the bottom of each of the guides, and through which are adapted to pass the securing screws 5. One ofthe guide ways has its upper extremity off-set and bifurcated, and arranged for rotation between the said bifurcated portion is a grooved wheel 6. The opposite guide is provided with a double grooved wheel 7 and passing over one of the grooves of the said wheel and the opposite grooved wheel 5 is a cord or cable 8. This cable isconnected with one of the curtain brackets 9. The bracket comprises a flattened strip of suitable material, and has both its upper and lower edges formed with reduced inturned fingers 10 which are of a size sufficient to snugly engage within the U-shaped guide. The plate is also provided with a suitable opening 11, the same being either of a rectangular shape or of a rounded shape in order to accommodate either the rounded pintle or the rectangular extremity of the actuating shaft provided upon the spring roller of a curtain 12.
The numeral 13 designates a second cord or cable which passes over the second groove of the double grooved pulley, and secured to the end of this cable 13 is a plate similar to the plate 9 just described. The cords 8 and 13 are secured together and are also connected with a pull cord 14. This pull cord passes through openings provided in a box shaped member 15, the same having its edges provided with perforated lugs for the reception of securing elements, whereby the said member 15 is secured upon the stile of the sash. The member 15 is further provided with a spring actuated contact member which is formed with a head which extends centrally through an opening in the said member 15. This contact member is adapted to engage with the pull cord 14 to retain the brackets at a desired position upon the frame, so that the curtain may be shifted to either an upper or a lower position as. desired.
The lower extremity of the curtain is provided with a hook 16, the said hook being adapted to engage with a stud 17 provided upon the lower longitudinal stile or member of the frame or casing. By this arrangement it will be noted that the lower portion of the curtain may be retained upon the frame, While the upper portionof the cur tain, or that actuated by the mechanism heretofore described, may be raised to any desired height, thus the upper sash being open for ventilation and the curtain arranged in such a position as to permit of light entering the room and at the same time screen the occupants of the room from the eyes of the curious 1 Having thus described the invention, what I claim is In combination with a window frame, U-
and lower extremities reduced to provide tongues which engage within the first U- shaped guide, said plate being centrally provided with an opening to receive one of the pintles of a curtain, a second cable passing over the second groove of the double grooved pulley, a bracket secured to this head, said bracket comprising a flattened plate having reduced inturned fingers engaging the guide upon this portion of the frame, the said plate being centrally provided with an opening adapted to receive the second pintle of a curtain roller, both of the cables being connected with a pull cord, said pull cord passing through a boxing, a spring actuated push member for normally contacting the said pulley cord to prevent the said pulley cord from moving, the said spring actuated member being provided with a stud which extends through an opening in the boxing, a curtain for the roller, said curtain having its lower extremity provided with a hook, and a stud upon the frame adapted to be engaged by the hook, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
