STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912.
Application filed April 4, 1910. Serial No. 553,228,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it Vknown that I, JAMES H. WITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merna, in the county of Cust-er and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specication.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in stoves.
The object of my invention is to provide a stove which while especially arranged to be used as a heating stove can also be used for cooking purposes.
A further aim of my invention is to provide a stove with two outstanding hollow ledges arranged to serve as warming shelves.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the speciflc structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a front view of a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a middle lengthwise sectional view. Fig. 5 is a top View of the inner casing showing the damper arrangement.
The aim of my invention is to provide al stove, more particularly adapted to be used in the home, which, while proving particularly efficient as .a heating stove, may also'be used for cooking and baking purposes.
In Athe accompanying drawings the numeral 5 designates the front plate of the stove which has the oven opening 6, the fire boX opening 7 and the ash pit door 15. The upper end ofthis plate is curved from a point approximately half way between the ends of the p-late, the lower half section of the plate being rectangular. This plate is provided with the apertures 10 toreceive the damper rods, while below the oven opening 6 are the ears 12, the ears 13 being positioned at one side of the fire boX opening. The ash pit has twosets of ears 14, arranged to carry the ash pit doors 15. The ears 13 carry the door 7 while the ears 12 are arranged to receive the pins 17 'carried by the oven door 18, havingthe operating handle 19. Positioned above the oven opening is the latch 20 held upon the pin 21 and serving to securely hold the door 18 of the oven in a closed position.
The rear plate 4 is constructed similar to the front plate with the exception that no fire boX or ash pit opening is provided. The rear oven door 6 is detachablyy secured in a manner similar to that described as attached to the front plate. Positioned between the fire boX and ash pit'opening, is the'grate 23 of any approved type, so that wood or coal may be consumed in this stove. The two end'plates are connected by means of the casing forming plates 24 and 25. .The casing plate 25, at opposite points, is provided with the outwardly directed portions 26 which form the ledges 27. These ledges serve vas warming shelves. Cavities are formed in these portions so that heat may pass therein. The upper rounded and dome shaped portion 28 of the casing is provided with two lid op-enings 29 covered by the lids 30, these openings being arranged to receive suitable cooking vessels. kCentrally positioned between thevends of the casing portion 28 is the collar 31, arranged to receive the stove pipe 32. Suitable legs 33 hold the stove above the floor.
Held between the end plates is the inner casing comprising the horizontal section 35 forming the bottom of the oven and the upper curved portion 36, this inner casing being further provided with the flanges 37, arranged to receive an iron grate 38, sup porting the baking and other culinary vessels placed within the oven. The ledges are braced by means of the bars 40, secured by means of suitable rivets 39.
Secured to the upper portion of the inner casing near opposite ends are the flanges 42 and 43 held in parallel spaced relation. In Fig. 5 the position of the flanges is clearly indicated, the space between the flanges serving as a draft way. Each flangeis provided with an ear 44 within which the damper trunnions 45 and the damper rods 46 are held. In their vertical or closed position the lower edges of the dampers 48 are held against the attaching portions 48 of the flanges 42 and 43; these dampers, however, are illustrated as being held in a slightly inclined open position, as shown in Fig. 3. l/Vhen the two dampers are turned down, as shown in the ligure last referred to, the heat and products of combustion circle over the inner casing and ind a ready escape through the stove pipe opening. However, when the 'dampers are closed the products of combustion are directed toward the end plates and in find*-V ing an escape they musty pass through the draft ways around the flanges 42 and 43 and the dampers 48, in which condition the products of combustionpasssquarely below the lid openings within theajouter casing.
When the stove is tof'ibe'used merelyl for heating purposes, the oven doors 18 are enl t-irely removed permittinga vfree circulation Y what is claimed is:
of 'air through the'oven space. The stove ledges at all times; serve as vwarming shelves.
A stove constructed according tomy invention may be used as a coal or wood burning stove, is simple and inexpensive in construction and durablev and eiiicient in operation and can be used both as a heating and a kitchen stove'.
Having thus described my said invention- A stove ofthe class described, comprising front and rear vertical walls having rounded upper edges, sideV walls formedto correspond to the contour of the rontand Vrear walls to form an arch shaped dome, said dome having an opening formed therein, outwardly extending shelves formed in the .side walls and adapted to be heated from within,
a dome shaped oven arranged within Vthe Yarch shaped dome portion of said stove, .said
oven extending from the front to the rear walls thereof, but having its side walls remote from the side walls of the stove to form* draft ways, flanges arranged upon the top of said oven in proximity to the ends there-ff of, and dampers arranged in said ianges for controlling the drattv ways, said flanges being positioned for permitting the products of combustion to pass thereover when said dampers are closed. p Y
- In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. i
