EDMUND A. PARKER, OF MERIDEN', CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LEWIS A. MILLER, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
JAR TOP AND COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Jar Tops and Covers, of which the following is a specification. i I
This invention has for its object to provide an inexpensive jar cover or. top and pourer combined, which shall be applicable to the various types of jars in ordinary use and which is itself an article of manufacture and adapted to be sold independently of the jar.
It is. of course well understood to be a common practicewith housekeepers to use fruit jars as canisters or containers for liquids and for tea, coffee, spices, ,cereals, powders and the various culinary and other materials of which it is necessary to keep a supply. Fruit jars of 'the ordinary makes are sold very cheaply and are well adapted for use as containers for many kinds of groceries both liquid and dry and for beverages. It is an objection, however, to fruit jars when used for this purpose that the cover must be removed to permit removal of the contents and that the removal of the cover is frequently inconvenient if not quite diflicult to accomplish.
My present invention enables me to overcome this objection and to open up an ex tended range of usefulness to ordinary fruit jars by providing covers o-r tops for the different types of jars which shall be provided with pouring nozzles and which may be sold independently of the jars and so cheaply that housekeepers may purchase a quantity of the pourer tops and substitutethem for the regular jar tops thus enabling them to use fruit jars interchangeably either for their original purpose or as containers for groceries and other materials.
With these and other objects in view I' have devised the novel jar top and pourer which I will now describe referring to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 31, 1911. Serial No. 647,101.
Patented Nov. ac, 1912.
accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the different parts:
Figure l is a sectional View illustratingthe application ofthe invention. side elevation.
10 denotes a fruit jar of any ordinary or preferred construction. 11 denotes the cover which is ordinarily made of vitreous material and has molded or formed integral therewith a pouring nozzle 12 which may be of any ordinary or preferred style or design. The nozzle is shown as closed by a screw cap 14. The screw cap 16 is provided with a hole 17 through which the nozzle 12 projects, said nozzle being integral with a flange or cover extending completely over the mouth of the jar and beneath the cap, the nozzle 12 being eccentric to said flange or cover. Said flange or cover is provided with a central annular depression to receive a corresponding depression in the cap 16.
It will be obvious that in use the jar may be filled and closed in the usual manner and may remain closed until the contents are exhausted. To remove a portion of the contents it is simply necessary to turn off the screw cap, pour out the desired quantity and then turn the screw .cap back to place.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
The combination with a jar having a relatively wide mouth, of a cap remov ably engaging said mouth and having an opening therein, and an independent cover member fitting within the top of said cap and having a pouring nozzle extended through said opening. 7 L
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDMUND A. PARKER.
